GTA has always been set in America (sans London 1969.) All of the unique writing and style of the games is a parody of US locations. To be honest if it wasn't in the US, it wouldn't be GTA.

RDR is basically GTA4 in the west but whereas RDR is revered from both fans and critics, GTA4 got a hefty backlash. While I realize a lot of these things is due to the decisions made for GTA4's direction, I think a gigantic part of it also has to do with setting. RDR feels fresh whereas GTA4 feel stale.

A GTA set in the distant future could really do some good and could be potentially the most interesting -- writing wise -- GTA because they won't rely on past events or current events, they'll have to create their own events and be able to craft their own world from there.

It'd be interesting.

The main reason is the pressure. GTA4 was under so much pressure to be the game of the forever while RDR was basically a new game to most people. With zero expectations.

Agent is rumored to take place in Cairo, Egypt.

But...

...the American Dream and American pop culture is at the heart of the (modern, Houser) GTA games.

Awesome, that's where I'd want the new GTA. Anywhere out of the US would suffice though. The American City has been done to death it seems.

Seriously though, now that the train has sailed for Zelda...

I'm happy with a remake of San Andreas' Vinweood, was the best area of the game.

Hope they really go all out with the gang side of things, was sorely lacking from GTAIV.

They need to do GTA Asia. Seriously, any major city such as Tokyo, Seoul, Shanghai etc. would be an amazing setting.

I agree, I'm dying to play a game in one of these cities. Such potential. I think this is one major reason why I'm so fucking stoked for the Shanghai parts of Deus Ex: HR.

What about some Northern African cities like Cairo? Be a nice "Unexpected" change.

That's what'd grab my interest too. GTA IV had a much more poignant story than usual and that's what made it so much more engrossing for me. If they set the next one in an African city or in a place where economic hardship is a more common factor of life it could be a really effective new approach to the GTA formula.

Fuck Shanghai...its being done to death by a lot of weak games.

TOKYO desperately needs to be explored. The only question is how they will merge the cinematic nature of GTA + a foreign language while doing it justice...

I will take Hollywood though...but give us the San Andreas gangsta vibe.

ITT: People do not understand that the point with GTA is that it should feel like home (no, not literally like home, but you need to know what the real life equivalent is like). It needs to be universal. Thats why they will never have it outside America, because everybody knows America.

geography in gta isn't exactly true to life, no reason they can't have an american city and a foreign city, seperated by an ocean that can only be crossed by non-user controlled means

LA/Tokyo, NY/London, whatever

The setting change may help with some people, but for me it's all about the game play. I never finished GTA III and I never played VC or SA. I turned on cheats to finish GTA IV because having to go all over the place to get ammo and my car weren't fun. I started doing the extras after the game was done but quickly quit because of the game play issues I had. I played a little of he Lost & the Damned and the Ballad of Gay Tony but the game play issues I had remained and I couldn't get into them.

That's a stark contrast from the 100% completion I achieved in Saints Row 1, Bully, Saints Row 2 and Red Dead Redemption. I got 100% in those games because I enjoyed playing them.

Surprised at the number of people asking for an internationally set GTA. Didn't Sam Houser always say GTA was about the American dream? His stories have always surrounded stereotypical American themes, no? I have never thought of playing a GTA game outside of America...yes, London can be used as a case in point to prove that wrong, but I think that is the exception, not the rule...

And it wouldn't be as much of a big hit really.

The only other thing they could do to have equal or higher sales is have the game set in multiple cities across the world. And even then it might not sell as much really.

Everyone in the world is familiar with American culture, so everyone can relate to what the game offers. Not so with other countries.

As some have already mentioned Hollywood is tiny, I dont see how they could make a full game using just Hollywood. If it is a return to San Andreas, I could see it.

THe problem is, little places in the US would have as much character as New York so they would have to give the game and gameplay a ton of depth to be better then GTAIV while in a "smaller" city. I would like them to take more freedom like in San Andreas though so they are not so limited by the geography.

I would like to see a GTA outside of the US but i get sick of non american accents. I have nothing against Other english accents, i just get sick of it after hearing nothing but "foreign" accents for over 30 hours. Plus GTA is made in the US, it would be extremely hard to nail the authenticity of an entire city full of accents and culture. Most of the mexicans in Red Dead either sounded like retards, south americans, or cubans.... and thats just across the border, imagine over seas? it would be dreadful.

Hollywod whould be great but only if set in the 70's-80's.

I whould much preffer a Tokyo GTA, even better if set in a post apocalypt decadent tokyo city like bladerunner. lol :D

I would really like to see something along the lines of San Andreas in Europe. London or Paris, plus Venice, and then either a Switzerland/ Austrian sort of area as the the third. I do not think you need London and Paris but either one would be great, Venice could incorporate mafia elements and would be an interesting city for all sorts of boating fun, and the Swiss or Austrian area would be reminiscent of the more open sort of areas in San Andreas but with a lot more elevation to work with.

The Hollywood section of San Andreas was a little lame, and there is so much more they could do with that, but it is not enough for a big game and would have that same sort of congested feel of GTA4.

If they keep the 3 islands approach to mapping I would hope they would differentiate more by putting a boarder in the middle. Either do Mexico/USA, Detroit/Ontario, Vice/Cuba, or a longer hands off trip like someone mentioned above.

They could do Casino like they did Scarface.

Care to explain or this is one of those hit and run posts?

Set it in 70s Vegas

Make it like the movie Casino where you can either become more like Nicky or Sam. So either you can become an enterprising enforcer that becomes increasingly notorious or you can concern yourself with moving up the business ladder with you ultimately moving above the street so to speak. This would take away from the game play since you'd be running and shooting a lot less if you became more business centric but I'd like them attempt to make it engaging. Have a mini game where you have to decide how many blueberries go in each muffin for example.

This may be hard for some in the gaming press to grasp, but Rockstar does publish more games than just GTA. And one of those upcoming games happens to be set in Hollywood.
