S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 under development - multiplatform

GSC Game World announces S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2 - the official sequel to best-selling game series - in development now. A completely new multi-platform technology developed by GSC will make the core of the game.

"After the official sales of the series exceeded 4 million copies worldwide, we had no doubts left to start creating a new big game in the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. universe. This will be the next chapter of the mega-popular game players expect from us" - said Sergiy Grygorovych, CEO of GSC Game World.

The game is scheduled for release in 2012.

I can't wait, personally. I haven't played CoP, yet, but a new engine is alone is enough to get me excited. I'm assuming multi-platform technology implies it will be for consoles, too, perhaps?

I hope it doesn't get "dumbed down" too much, but is much more polished in terms of bugs etc.

I paid good money for this Dynex!
Hmm... hope this doesn't get dumbed down.

The first two games were seriously lacking in terms of design, but Pripyat was excellent. I really hope this lives up to that.

Oh thank jeebus, a new engine. I'm not much of a graphics whore but it was hard for me to stomach something that looks like Call of Pripyat in 2010.

hold on there. why not?
I upgraded my PC a few months ago after having a shitty one, so I only played the original STALKER 2/3 months ago. I went straight in to Clear Sky, and although it was fun, I didn't feel the same love for it. The faction aspect did nothing for me and the recycled locations took away the magic of exploring The Zone.

As a result I figured I'd take a little break and play other games that I've been dying to get to (Cryostasis, Penumbra, Crysis etc) and go in to CoP feeling a bit more fresh from the universe. I'd quite like to use the Complete mod for it, too, when it's finished since I really liked how the mod changed the first two games.

I've been assured CoP is much better than Clear Sky, so I look forward to buying it soon! :)

It still looks better than 95% of the games out there.

Played S.T.A.L.K.E.R. mostly unpatched so there were a few bugs here and there but it's still one of my all-time favourite shooters. I'm ready for a sequel at this point.

As I said in the other thread, multi-platform gives me a bad feeling about this. Let's just hope they aim to deliver the full STALKER experience to console gamers and don't try to dumb it down.

Russia, Ukraine, Georgia, Eastern Europe and large parts of Western Europe is PC land and thats were they earned their money.

I don't think we have to worry about the PC version.

I am actually very pleased they are using their own, new, engine. The STALKER games all this very unique, distinct look that I loved.

this series sold 4 million copies, why the hell do they feel the need to *ahem* share with them? you know... those other ones.

Is that vanilla, Dennis?

If so, fuck waiting for Complete. :lol That looks so much better than SoC and CS.
No, its not vanilla exactly, but the textures etc. are vanilla. Its just a weather mod that prevents the game from being dark and overcast 90% of the time.

I would Absolutely recommend the Complete mods for SoC and CS.

I don't think Complete for CoP is out yet.

I feel sorry for the console people. They'll have to wait for certification before they can get the patches to fix all the game breaking bugs on release.

Still love the series, but I ran into 2 game breaking bugs in Clear Sky. One required me to start over because the first patch didn't retroactively fix it. The other required me to shoot my allies to work around it.

No, no, I have used the Complete mod for the first two, and I was waiting for it before I played CoP, but now you've made me reconsider since that looks so much better already. :D

Do you think I could get it to look like that with a good framerate, then? (955, 5850, 4GB Ram, W7 64bit)

Ha! I was just playing some COP a few minutes ago. This is great news, and hopefully GSC will optimize their engine. COP with DX10 lighting destroys my system.

Even bigger than that, they'll miss out on the mods. STALKER with 2009 Complete and Realistic Weapons mod is a whole new experience and probably one of my favorite games from the past decade.

Hahaha, o dennis, those were the same shots you posted in response to me saying the CoP looks like ass in that other thread. Those particular buildings are alright looking, but let me see if I can find the ones I originally posted.

To specify, that is on DX11 with everything turned to max.
LOOK AT THAT HILL.

And Linux. What other platforms are there anyway?

I know, I know, but the 3DS won't be able to do this justice.

So the idea of using CryEngine3 has come to nothing then? That would have given them multiplatform out of the box. Seems very ambitious to develop a new engine from scratch, given that some of their former core engine developers left, but then, GSC never lacked ambition in things STALKER.

Obvious a new STALKER is exciting, but I wouldn't have minded at all if they had waited on creating a sequel. Give it time to really make the game stand out from its predecessor (and its competition). I really don't want to see STALKER becoming a "streamlined", "cinematic" experience, there's plenty of those already.

So the rumors that they where using Cryengine where false? I hope that they keep the modding support from the original series.

Oh God yes, a real sequel! I hope they expand on what we all love from STALKER and not dumb it down in order to gain a potentially bigger audience.

meh there is never a shortage on crazy russian programmers

edit: holy shit I just noticed the deepshadows guys made a hidden object game that was released last month. maybe those two should rejoin the gsc team for stalker2. damn

their own engine? sounds like a recipe for disaster, but I hope they'll work it out.

What I'm really worryed about is gameplay. COP felt tired and unispired + clumsy and anticlimactic. Shadow of Chernobyl was the best one. And oh my VO was horrid in COP and Clear Sky. Also writing was very far from spectacular.

What I need

1)Open world
2)Retain realistic gunplay feel
3)Please return dynamic anomalies
4)Include vehicles.
5)WRITE DECENT STORY AND DIALOGUES DAMMIT
6)Hire good actors

Consoles? I don't really care about consolization if they get gameplay right because COP was an utter dissapointment in this department. Still I'd finish it someday.

Yeah. I totally agree. The first ran like crap when the game finally released even though it was old as all get out. But there were some great qualities that kept me in; be it doesn't take much since I am like you guys and kind of have a tolerance for that kind of stuff where the general population would not. I think it would bomb on consoles. Console games seemed to be almost over-refined, dumbed down and overally, cater to the mass audience. Even the 3rd was pretty intense, and I am not sure you could really effectively play that game without a Mouse & Keyboard combo...

Call of Pripiyat > Shadow of Chernobyl > Clear Skies

The inclusion of more RPG elements and open-world did wonders for CoP.

Yeah....cause STALKER will sell millions to the dudebro crowd....

Maybe not the dudebro crowd but the fallout 3 crowd is more than possible. If the game is good enough :).

The game should be focused on the STALKER crowd and not attempt to go after other "crowds".
