Sea of Thieves' performance on PS5 is key to Microsoft's future decisions, says Tom Warren

Journalist Tom Warren, who was one of those who published rumors about Microsoft's plans before the official announcement and even revealed which four titles would be coming,

now claims that the company is considering bringing more games depending on the success of the releases, especially Sea of Thieves.

"Sources familiar with Microsoft’s plans tell me that the company continues to evaluate other Xbox-exclusive games coming to PS5."

This change to Xbox comes as Microsoft continues to consider strategic changes to its Microsoft Gaming division. Earlier this year, Microsoft put a number of previously Xbox-exclusive games on PS5 and Nintendo Switch, with Sea of Thieves set to be released on Sony's console on April 30. Sources familiar with Microsoft's plans have told me that the company is still evaluating other Xbox-exclusive games coming to PS5. I understand that Sea of Thieves will be a key test of whether other games can make it to the PS5 or Nintendo Switch.

I hate stuff like this, basing future titles to come to PS5 based on a game that's been out for like 5 years. If it doesn't sell 3 million copies your going to say well they dont support these titles, instead of hey lets release a Day and date title on PS5 and XBOX and see the results.

Many people played it on XBOX and grew tired of it, and now own PS5's so they probably won't be buying it now.

They don't support the title because ms accidently condition their audience to not buy games and sub to gamepass. It back fired and eviscerated their software sales and litterly putting a pause on hardware sales because "you can play gamepass anywhere" advertising.

Don't even get me started with day and date with pc too.

In the end their best option is to dump hardware, go the publisher route and some how offer azure support to Sony's and Nintendo existing online platform.

I don't believe it. My take is the decision has been made already for at least the first 12 months worth of titles. They have the devkits, they need the money and they'll only get it by porting many titles. It is likely that the first few titles are a technology test though, in terms of skilling up and establishing specialist internal support teams etc. No doubt they would also be building relationships with Sony dev support.

I'll believe that in case it's a year or almost a year from Sea of Thieves to the next PS5 port. Because ports take quite a few months to be done. If shortly after Sea of Thieves there is another PS5 port then the final decision was made time ago and this was just another lie to make the transition as painless as possible for the most dedicated Xbox gamers.

It's certainly priming the audience's expectations. Everyone knows that more games are coming.

although now that i think about it, it's not clear how this is even a news-worthy story. of course MS will monitor how games are going to do on PS5. why wouldn't they?

I’ll wait for game pass on PlayStation lol. I’m starting to wonder if they Sony would ever allow this

I doubt it’s gona do more then they expect to sell. We are in a cost of living crisis, unless ms dose day one release with Xbox, u can’t expect that much, PlayStation fans are not like pc fans, they don’t like waiting for games.

As long as Sea of Thieves does not bomb in sales on the PS5 other Xbox games are coming. Looking at preorders it has probably already exceeded expectations. I think people are looking at it backward, it doesn't have to knock it out of the park, it just has to turn profit and increase those Microsoft account numbers.

A lie? You make it sound as if this info is from an official MS press release or from an interview with Phil Spencer.

This is a “rumor” from “sources” from a random games journalist. Not from MS itself.

Microsoft future decisions? What are those?

Keep Xbox games exclusive to Xbox and sell gangus..... gamepass? Like they have been doing for the past 6 years to great success?

How is that any different from what Sony did stepping into pc?

A lie from a leaker.

On the other hand, Microsoft and Microsoft's "leakers" are intimately linked (they are the ones who often make trial balloons or damage control for Microsoft).

What a clueless clown. The roadmap is already set. And also he’s not the first one to leak the rumors anyways.

They’ve already done this with late PC releases on Microsoft Store, then late Steam releases, now they do day 1 releases on both Microsoft Store and Steam. And Sony are walking the same path. Platform warriors are going to hate the future of this industry but everyone else will love it. Buy a PC, play everything, be happy.
