Sega Saturn Appreciation and Emulation Thread

HSS-0130... Someday :(

All the ones I see for reasonable prices are ruined (i.e. modded for use on modern systems; unusable on Saturn).

Oh hell yeah! I wish I had bought one way back when...

...and yes, auctions for sure. That's how you see the real value of retro games. BIN gouging is for the birds.

HOLY SHIT, I DIDN'T EXPECT THIS.

He accepted the offer, which was $35 less. (Got it for $115)

Ok, this will be a Christmas gift to myself. My Sega Saturn Collection will finally be complete! :D

Is the NA version of the game that expensive? I paid 10€ for my copy at a local store, 1 or 2 years ago. It's missing the manual tho.

Yeah, prices have come down a little, but it's also never been as collectible as say Radiant Silvergun, or Panzer Dragoon Saga or even Burning Rangers because it actually sold well.

BR and PDS are the two US releases that are definitely in lower print runs, though even Burning Rangers isn't that hard to find in a retro shop.

Regarding Silvergun, it's always fascinated me. With over 25,000 units printed, it pretty much destroys the idea that a game's scarcity is correlated to its value.

There are a number of
better
Saturn games with much smaller print runs no where near the value of RS.

You may be able to get a 360 for cheaper than Guardian Heroes on the Saturn

Especially if you want to get Radiant Silvergun eventually.
I already found it for ~$42 :) I'd love to play Radiant Silvergun, but it seems like Saturn is in no way short of good shmups anyway.

By the way, nothing I could read from anyone will make me not want to play Shinobi Legions. I just need to play it.

Shinobi Legions is actually a legit good game. It just has a few poor levels.

Now that I have a new PC I will have to get SSF and run through my (now pitiful) collection.

I'm kind of surprised at the higher asking for BR these days...but I guess it is getting harder to find a US copy these days.

Got the Euro RGB cable changed over to japanese...well for the most part. There are still three or four more wires I have to figure out where to solder, and the Euro cable had a little transistor in there bridging two things. Image is fine but occasionally has some minor flicker which means I've gotta connect something more. But 90% there, with sound.

I'm not at home right now, but did Saturn Fighting Vipers run at 60fps? I know it uses the same mixed resolution (high res backgrounds, low-res characters and arenas) with goraurd shading approach as Fighters Megamix, but I forget if it ran at 60 or not. I know Megamix doesn't.

Either way, I'm curious as to why they did it. Virtua Fighter 2 is seen as a high point for the Saturn, tech-wise. Does anyone here think the tradeoff was worth it and prefer the way Megamix/Vipers looks?

Or maybe they couldn't get walled arenas with the high-res no-lighting approach? That sounds a little wild to me.

It's lower res but still runs at 60fps

Wow, is this is from the Framemeister?

Yeah.

I'm still getting a bit of minor flickering. Rechecked everything. I'm going to go into the frammeister settings, maybe that it it. I used a japanese sigma rgb cable as well as the adapter that came with the upscaler, opened them up and lined up all the wires and soldered one-for-one. Still some extra wires unused.

This is the resistor that was inline on the euro cable, and it is not in my resoldered version. I think I'm good to go till I track down an official Saturn RGB cable.

EDIT: Okay, I went into the Frammeister setting and fooled around and I'm no longer getting flickering. Took it off meister mode and picked one of the normal. Sounds like I'm good to go. Tried out a few games and no issues.

Garegga is always my test game and it is looking wonderful on the 40" HDTV. Still gotta do some tweaking (but the frammeister menus are so complex):

And a Hyperduel:

I'd be curious to know what other folks are using for Saturn RGB settings on the Framemeister/XRGB-3.

Those Framemeister shots look crazy. Hope I can find a good scaler whenever my CRTs die, lol.

It's lower res but still runs at 60fps

Yeah, I just checked it out. And really, it looks better than I remember. It still has the moving lighting in Picky's stage, even!

And I put in Fighters Megamix for probably the first time in over a decade. I was wrong on this one, it runs at 60 just like FV. Don't know where I got the idea that it ran at 30.

It's also an excellent game, holy shit.

Inspired by Yes Boss's pictures, I dusted off the Saturn tonight for some Elevator Action Returns and played a console other than my 3DS XL for the first time in about two months. Jad the Taft was running folks down... literally. Seriously, he can body check hover-cycles. No problem. God I love this game. I wish I could find solid 2nd player to make a good at a co-op 1CC.

Man, I can't believe that BR price on the last page. That's probably three times what I paid in college. PDS looks to have also increased to the tune of about double. I big part of me is tempted to just sell, not that I can buy all the same games for less in Japanese, and understand them (which I couldn't when I was a college freshman).

In truth, though, it's because I don't want to have to worry about those freakin' cases anymore. I literally bought every copy of $1 NHL 97 that my Toys R Us had for replacements, and still never had enough.

That sweet sweet scanline porn. :)

The Framemeister really is great for 240p devices. Can't wait to get one later this month.

I wouldn't mind a scaler, but having only recently upgraded all my gaming equipment from composite (or RF, in the case of my Genesis) to S-Video, I'm not really ready to start buying more cables for SCART/RGB.

I'm guessing he's not running in TATE, going by those pictures.

Yep, just 4:3 windowboxed. You would have to go tate on the big HDTV to get vertical scanlines with the upscaler (unless it has a vertical scanline option I don't know about) I'm keeping it all 4:3 in the sense that I'd be running a Saturn on an CRT. Image is plenty big.

Wow that reminds me of a huge bundle I bid on once. I dropped out though because I stupidly suspected something was wrong with the sale.

It was like 150 or so games, many of them were good to great titles, and there were even a few that justified the cost all by their lonesome (such as Hyper Duel). Part of the reason I balked was the absurd price. The auction ended at about $150 or so...maybe 200...

I really wish I didn't see this now. I'm a little depressed all of a sudden....

He got, like, three copies of Last Bronx.
I'm still shocked that game got a double-disc set.

How long ago was this?

My copy of Bulk Slash arrived. Love the OST, the opening cutscene, the over-the-top girly eye candy. Classic mid-90s Japanese action game, well worth the price. Handles like a dream, too.

Bulk Slash is a really cool game. That game doesn't have difficulty settings, does it? Might be fun to revisit.

Shining Force III was my favorite Saturn game and one of my favorite games ever. Wish there was a way for me to play it again that wasn't expensive/illegal/a pain in the ass.

Is there any difference between House of the Dead 1 NA and JP versions aside from the green blood? I was reading another forum post that said something about the NA version runs at 60 fps or at least had a debug mode to unlock it?

Never seen the original game in action on a Saturn, so i'm not sure of the framerate, but i'd imagine it would have been 60 on both the JP and NA version at default.

It might have had a 50/60hz option in the debug but the FPS wasn't anywhere near 60 according to this

Well either way, just ordered one of these:

51zVxQ9FYvL._SL500_AA300_.jpg

For about 35 bucks. The NA and EU guns look funny (Orange and Blue), and I found a Super Cobra awhile back at a thrift store...but it acts kinda strange at times (sometimes it works perfectly, other times...no hits at all). And honestly, I had no idea the JP gun was black, so that pretty much made this a must buy.

Only thing I dont like about ordering import titles from Japanese stores is how long the shipping takes lol. Even worse if the seller doesnt use a tracking number.

Yeah thats what the post actually said, 60hz. If its not that big of a difference, it would be nice if there was an AR code to unlock red blood in the JP version.

On my last trip to Japan i actually picked up a Virtua Cop 1 + Gun bundle for 300Y, Virtua Cop 2 for 50Y and a second gun for 200Y! (all perfect as new condition as well)

I haven't had to do it myself, but i have friends who use various mail forwarding services to get stuff faster from Japan. The kind of prices i mentioned above are easy enough to get from Amazon Japan as well so maybe give it a go next time!

Hmm, Bulk Slash is one of the few games I never picked up since I couldn't get any good impressions for it and at the time, I certainly wouldn't buy a somewhat unknown 3D shooter on the Saturn from a developer I'm not familiar with.

When I find a copy in mint condition for a decent price I'll certainly pick it up now. :)

The Virtua Cop ports are impressive for the hardware, but among the home ports I go for the enhanced PS2 compilation release. I wish the PS2 ones looked closer to the Model 2 games, but they're crisp and run well and don't look bad.

It does, yeah. Hard is much tougher.

Nice, thanks.
