Shadow of the Eternals Kickstarter Relaunched

Pledged again. I got back the money from their own crowdfunding (via Paypal) and if they intended to "steal" some money they could have never refund those.

What a fucking pissing contest in this thread! I don't get why the people feel the need to do that. You have trust, don't contribute, it simple. I have the feeling that this is not only about Dyack, seeing some usual suspects here ...

I didn't back it up before, but I'm happy with the new policies (possible PS4 version, crowdfunding going towards a full game rather than a single episode, and a more reasonable amount of money to ask from the community), so I'm throwing $5 into this. Not much, but if every Eternal Darkness fan out there makes their tiny contribution, this game will happen.

I must say though, it pains me to see people categorically ignoring this simply because of Dyack's involvement. Sure, he made a few mistakes. Must the whole team and a potentially good game suffer because of them? Not to mention, this game wouldn't be the same without the man's involvement, since he was one of the main driving forces behind Eternal Darkness to begin with.

After having played the Eternal Darkness only for an hour a couple of weeks ago, now I can see what's all the commotion for; that game is still unsurpassed.

Good luck to all the backers. Hopefully we will all get a great game out of it. I will be really happy to purchase the game for PC after some good reviews.

Their last cash campaign ended with them only trending toward 15%. I assume this will do better, but I wonder if they'll make their much much lower goal.

They are litigious sue and blame other people for their own failings, have made only 1 great game, which is a total outlier in their development history and probably only happened because of their close development history with Nintendo, the "shadiness" of the last few years with them, abandoning practically only the NAME of Silicon Knights because of a court decision, maybe/maybe not stealing assets and equipment when they weren't supposed to, and more (remember the big Precursor news story a few months ago involving one of their employees?) just make this entire enterprise totally gross.

It's like Shyamalan; he made one, maybe two really good movies, but then a string of increasingly worse and worse films, and now he's trying to salvage his imploding career by begging for money to create a "spiritual sequel" to Unbreakable... and he's doing this for such a small percentage of the original's budget and without the strong supporting network that enabled the original to be good and successful in the first place.

People can be optimistic, or, more aptly, delusional, with their money all they want, but the gymnastics people go through to support this guy after his previous behavior and output is befuddling to me.

Using anonymous sources is a really dumb thing to criticize journalists over.

It is when that's the only source for such accusations and no one has come forward ever since publish to give it any credence. Has someone come forward and said "this is all or this part is true"?

The pitch seems better than the first time. I still can't help but think it's a showcase for desperate people now that Hayter is in. Kind of a "fallen from grace" team.

I loved Eternal Darkness, it's probably my favorite cube game.. but still not giving them money after I watched a friend play X-Men Destiny.

It really isn't when that's what the entire article is composed of. Most pieces with anonymous sources have named sources, who while usually of lesser importance than the anonymous sources, add credibility to the article.

That piece is literally nothing but anonymous sources.

Some places can get away with that because of the reputation they've built up over the years. Kotaku is far from being one of them.

Welcome To Shadow of The Eternals 3.0. !!! Hello Kickstarter !

You didn't trust Dennis Dyack due to all the bad press surrounding him and the fact he lost a lawsuit against Epic. Now he's hiding in the basement pretending not to work for us anymore !

You didn't trust Ken Mcculloch after being arrested for child pornography on his HD, we've removed all mention of him working for us. We're also asking for way less money than before.!!! So Please give us.

This one full game will be substantially less content than all the planned episodes put together, I would assume.

But the last kickstarter was just for the pilot episode, wasn't it? And the remaining episodes would theoretically be cheaper and funded by sales of that episode. With this amount it seems like it would be scaled back a lot.

It's a little late for them to be ignoring Dyack's involvement isn't it?

Everyone already knows he's involved.

It really doesn't matter. Dyack's role is in the creative area. He's not part of the executive leadership. You can criticize Dyack for many things, but he doesn't lack imagination.

This is Paul Caporicci and Shawn Jackson's company.

They explained last time that most expensive was the license for the CryENGINE and in the past kickstarter you could have pledged for all 12 episodes, so it was assumed that they will develop them all at some point in time.

People calling this kickstarter "shoddy", arguing that every other developer seeks an actual publisher to finance their games, need to consider why Precursor had to resort to crowdfunding in the first place.

Eternal Darkness is a game that not many people played, but one that was loved by a lot of the people who actually did play it. Hell, even a lot of the people who refuse to back this project up actually desire a spiritual successor to the game in question; they just don't have any trust left in Dyack and his company. The problem is, as much as the (few) people who played it loved Eternal Darkness, this was a project that sold badly even in its day, back when games were much cheaper to make, and when they didn't need the insane amounts of money that they need nowadays just to break even.

People tell themselves that this project is doomed from the start, that no good can come out of it, that Dyack and his company are not to be trusted after their failures and mistakes from recent years. They also argue that the very fact that Precursor Games is looking to get this game made by crowdfunding, instead of looking for a publisher who believes in and funds this project, is shoddy as fuck. But how could we have expected any different? Seriously. Let's ask ourselves: which publisher exactly would back a project like an Eternal Darkness sequel in this day an age, where Call of Duty clones and other tried and true formulas that appeal to the mass market are the only viable games to fund? Even if Precursor Games had an impeccable track record, who exactly would throw the money to them or to any other developer out there to finance a project like this? Almost no one would. And still, we somehow consider Precursor's inability to find a publisher "shoddy"? Please.

I think some people here need to ask themselves whether this project is really as "doomed to fail" as they believe, or if this is more of a self-fulfilling prophecy than anything else. If a big chunk of the people who actually did like Eternal Darkness refuse to help fund this project because of Precursor's track record, of course the game is not going to get made. But that says very little about Precursor's supposed "inability" to put a game together.

What is different in terms of their approach? What did they change?

They are asking for less money and they are no longer planning to release it in episodes. Instead we'll get a single 8-10 hours game in October 2014, if they make their goal and development goes smoothly.

I wonder if the initial crowdsourcing effort would have been successful had they taken this approach. I much prefer the sound of one full game than a few episodes. Still, if it was really this far in development you'd figure that Nintendo would more strongly consider entering a publishing arrangement and making it a Wii U exclusive. Still, despite a disastrous first go-around, they've done about as much as they can to ameliorate the situation.

Probably won't succeed regardless.

I'm sure they have and thought that wasn't the best use of their resources (and I don't blame them).

It's hard not to feel a little bad for these guys, but I still have very low confidence in their ability to create a decent game at this point. This generation has not been kind to the creators of Eternal Darkness, so expecting a spiritual sequel with comparable quality just seems hopelessly naive.

A $20 full game, even if it's shorter, is the right way to go. The last KS was just confusing and expensive.

Still not something I want to play, but they seem to have learned from their experience.

Dyack is a founder and employee of Precursor Games. As a founder, he presumably owns a large chunk of the company. I think it's fair that his reputation and the reputation of Silicon Knights follow him wherever he goes.

The day they fire him and he sells his stake is the day people get to say "Dyack has nothing to do with this project".

To be fair, X-Men was a project that even Silicon Knights themselves didn't give a fuck about. Of course it turned to be dogshit. Eternal Darkness is their baby. Rest assured that this will be given full priority by them.

As for Too Human, say what you will about the stupid idea that was entering into a lawsuit with Epic, but the thing is, whoever was right in the whole debacle, the fact remains: Silicon Knights had issues with Unreal Engine, as did several other developers at the time. Things appear to be going much more smoothly for them now that they are using Cry Engine 3.

I hope he's involved. Didn't he write the story for the first game?

I feel the same way. I want Dyack involved in this one. People ignore how much of a driving force he was behind the original. But hey, apparently it's cool to hate on him because he made some mistakes in the past completely unrelated to game design, so let's keep him from ever being involved in game development ever again.

sigh.

Well, this is interesting. Under the right circumstances, I'd be up for a "spiritual successor" to Eternal Darkness.

Wouldn't be willing to pre-fund it, though. So good luck with that. Make it good, and I'll post-fund it.

Exactly. People really need to stop thinking this is gonna be another X-Men Destiny. Even if they did divert funds from it to make their ED2 prototype (which they flatly deny, mind you), it'd only reinforce that they really really want to make this game.

This should be the first post.

As much as I want a Eternal Darkness sequel, I just can't justify to pledge something.

If it does get made because others pitched in, I'll be there day one.
