Sonic Mania - Special Stages, Bonus Stages, & Time Attack Shown Off

I mean I think the real reason there's all these different Metal Sonics is just that the team didn't communicate that well. Or care. Idk.

I think CD has to happen before 2 or after 3. The Death Egg crashes onto Angel Island and that sets off the events of 3 just a few days later.
Yeah the teams for S2/3K and CD were entirely different and in different countries. Sonic 2's Mecha Sonic was actually created independently from Metal Sonic, and the S&K one was an upgrade/throwback to that one.

This thread has put more effort into figuring out the Sonic timeline than anyone at Sega ever has.

Clearly not canon. "Robo Sonic"? Please. We all know his name is Zonik.

At a guess - mid next week at the earliest. Just read on Sonic Retro from a semi-reliable source that review copies are already "out there" so of greater importance IMO is that the entire game will probably leak soon. Be cautious to evade spoilers.

Late but thanks! In all honesty I do want to know the zones from past games and that's it lol.

Except Sonic Generations ignore Sonic CD except for the Metal Sonic fight. No level represented in the game
Because the levels were selected based on a combination of popularity, tropes used, and time restraints. Let's not confuse any of the particular levels for anything of story relevance.

Well they could have used the Metal Sonic chase level in Generations. But I honestly think they ignored the game because it would conflict with Sonic CD's time stones (why didn't Eggman retrieve them with the time eater?)

With that reasoning you could say Generations ignores Sonic 3 existente (Sky sanctuary is named as a Sonic and Knuckles stage).

Well Sonic 3 is in the Sonic and Knuckles game (ok you need both carts)

I don't really "get" the low-poly 3D character models. Wouldn't it make more sense to use sprites with the visual style they're going for? Don't get me wrong, it looks great, just don't think it quite fits with the rest of the game's style? Most of it looks like a Mega Drive game, this doesn't.

EDIT: Like they do on the spherical bonus stages. Why not do the same on the Mode 7-ish ones? These different stages look like they are from different games.

Either way, looks nice overall.

They are trying to make this game like the 2D Sonic Saturn game we never got (except really enhanced through better resolution and more processing power). Everything about this game's art style and presentation points to that.

I see, makes a bit more sense then. But why aren't the blue spheres stage also "more 3D" then? Those look like they belong on Mega Drive, not Saturn.

But whatever, looks cool.

I've been under the impression that each classic game is getting one stage each, but I keep seeing people posting two or three stages in their predictions. Have they said anything to indicate more than one zone per game?

they said that the game's length is longer than sonic 1/2 and comparable to sonic 3 & knuckles

They did? That's what the boss was... Or did you only play the 3DS version or something?

And the reason for the second part is that you're 100% thinking about it harder than anyone at Sega did. Sonic games have never gone that deep into their own lore.

Sonic 4 was literally just some mobile game they had in development ("Sonic the Portable") that they renamed and put onto consoles for a quick cash grab. There is literally no reason to acknowledge it anymore.

It would be nice to have the ability to play these bonus stages and special stages outside of the main game!

Sonic 4 was a mobile game? I always thought that it was an console game that later was ported to mobiles

Sonic CD = Sonic Gaiden.

Can't wait to play this game, been playing Sonic 3 Complete in the meantime. One of the all-time greats!

What I meant is that they choose Sonic & Knuckles instead of Sonic 3 & Knuckles.

But anyways it's not relevant, CD has a Stardust Speedway stage in Generations (albeit in a boss form only).

People thinking CD is some kind of spin off are deluding themselves.

I feel like a friggin nerd talking about Sonic continuity lol

If you look closely into the background of one of the stages, it fairly obviously says "Sonic the Portable" on the ferris wheel.

When people discovered a leaked version of Sonic 4 back in mid 2010, it had a bunch of gyroscope tilting shit in it. It clearly wasn't built with a regular controller in mind.

In the Casino levels you can still see "Sonic the Portable" in the background. That's how much love and care was put into the game.

EDIT: Already covered above.

He gonna cry in the car
let's stop referencing sonic 4 guys. I played 30 minutes of that shite and regretted my entire life after actually getting my hopes up for that.

I hope it isn't. Doesn't matter much, as there's nothing relevant in those games anyway.

They were definitely trying to make it more important with Episode 2's Little Planet tie-in by linking it to CD, but that (thankfully?) fell apart.

As an interesting side effect, it brought Taxman to Sega's attention when they were looking for a way to get CD on consoles and now we have Mania.

So since stardust speedway is in this does anyone else feel Metal Sonic needs to appear as a boss in some form? 1st or 2nd act is fine.

it was designed to be a mobile game first. The special stages were designed specifically for tilting (for consoles they use triggers instead), one of the casino stages was originally just a slot machine, and one of the Labyrinth levels was purely a minecart level that you controlled with tilting (the outrage behind this one resulted in the game being delayed and the levels remade.

The mix of retro looking 3d visuals and then revamped polished up blue spheres is weird to me but the only good reason I can randomly think up is that blue spheres has been remade ready for S3K

It's interesting how many different concepts Sonic CD shares with 2 on a conceptual level. Metal Sonic and Time Travel in particular. Prolly cuz at one point Sonic CD was going to be Sonic 2 CD.

It kind of reminds you of Sonic 1 Master System and Sonic 1 Genesis/MD. The dev teams shared concepts early on and some of the concepts of Sonic 1 (the band in particular) made it over but pretty different.

Sonic Versus 2

Somehow I missed this. Loving that blue spheres is back since I was strangely good at it but the other one looks like the controls are bit crap tbh. Really slippery looking.

Apparently there wasn't even any communication of ideas between teams. The time travel thing was a coincidence.
