just finished the game on PS3 and damn, now I know and understand the hate. I just hope that Episode 2 follows in the footsteps of Generations...

I wouldn't set expectations that high. However, I expect Classic Sonic Generations 3DS physics since it was mentioned previously.

Someone replaced Sonic's textures with the textures from the iPad version, which looks a bit better:

You can download it here, it needs to be placed in the PLY folder within the G_COM folder.

Are we sure "textures" is the right term? It seemed like a shader effect to me.

The one who did this said he replaced the textures. Besides that, the file says SON_TEX.
I should also probably credit the one who did this, it's done by Twilightzoney from Sonic Retro.

Butt-skidding across Android now

Funny thing: introduce it on Steam, a year after consoles, at $10. Introduce it on Android just a few days later for $4.

So let your green robot make a splash in the Splash Hill Zone and continue where the Sonic CD saga left off!

Oh damn it, now Sonic CD is a Sonic 4 prequel? But I thought it was Sonic CD continuing the saga of... AGH.

Zelda timeline thread.

Edit: What the hell, this thread is in community now too? As much as I don't like the title, it was just released to two brand new platforms.

About the PC version of Sonic 4 Episode 1, some interesting things.

In AMD/ATI graphics cards it's possible to force anti-aliasing through the drivers, but it only works at the resolution 1280x720, it doesn't work at any other resolution. Apparently this doesn't work for Nvidia graphics cards, I don't have one though so I can't test this.

Here's a comparison picture using both the default Sonic texture and the iPad version texture:

Default no AA - Default 8x AA
iPad texture no AA - iPad texture 8x AA

Looks good, I saw your post over at Sonic Retro. It's a shame they haven't validated you yet. I'd love to post there but you have to put so much work into it with the strict registration and whatnot, it's really not worth it, IMO.

Anyway, I wish somebody would get to work on fixing the physics, or even model swaps. I'm really surprised that no one has swapped environment textures yet. Has anyone even ripped the graphics? If so, I'll get to work right away... You would think more people would be trying to fix this steaming heap.

Nice fix. Sonic definitely looks a lot better. Seriously, the cel-shaded models were so out of place.

Those iPad textures look great, sucks AA only works in 720p though.
Yeah...AA only working at 720p is the result of SEGA doing this the lazy way, they used 1280x720 as the native resolution and only upscaled/downscaled the image for the other resolutions. If they suported the other resolutions properly, AA would have worked for every resolution.

They did this for the 2010 Sonic Adventure DX port and the other Dreamcast Collection games, but in those it's even worse, since the native resolution is 640x480, and so Anti-Aliasing and Anisotropic Filtering only work at 480p for those.

Huh. I did not think they used 3D models for characters in the WiiWare version. I figured it was all pre-rendered sprites.

I figured it would most likely be in real-time, since pre-rendered sprites at that resolution would take up a bit of space, which you need to conserve on a 40 MB game.

I've been messing with the iPad version textures for the PC version of Sonic 4 Ep1, this is the result of what I've been doing.

Texture Pack:

Comparison pictures, first is the default texture, second is the modded texture (I took the pictures with anti-aliasing forced through the drivers):

Sonic and Super Sonic:
