Even though I prefer that Sonic and logo, I just don't the official one being that bad. Then again, I'm pretty easy going about Sonic 4 so far.
Don't get me wrong, I'm going to get the game on day 0 anyway, but the new Sonic is an ugly motherfucker. He used to have that "attitude" look, now he looks angry. And it's like Sega is pointing him with a gun on the back for him to smile.

You know, I still want a game that consists entirely of the Sonic type levels from Adventure 1 and 2. I know they weren't anything like the Genesis games, but damn it all if they weren't fun. I imagine they'd be even more fun if you didn't occasionally fall through the ground and die for no reason, and if you didn't have to put up with the awful story.

I'm actually considering making a comparison video just for the hell of it, but:

- The intro and ending FMVs are stretched to be full screen, and are re-timed to match the lengths of the american songs. The ending FMV was never intended to be in full screen OR last the entire 5 minute duration of "Sonic Boom". As such, the game's credits sequence is completely missing and the ending FMV plays at around 3fps.

- All of the sound effects in Sonic CD in both Gems Collection and on the PC are 22khz WAV files. They're full of hissing and all of the other problems that come with a lower sampling rate.

- The transparent water effect is missing from Tidal Tempest Zone. It was present in the PC version, so its absence in the Gems port is a mystery.

- Special Stages in the Gems version of Sonic CD run at 125% speed, making them much more difficult to complete.

I could've sworn there was more than that, but that's all I can remember off the top of my head.
What about the addition of loading screens on the PC and Gems versions? The SegaCD version had nothing of the sort and made transitions between time much nicer.

The only downside to the SegaCD version is the presence of slowdown. The game has serious framerate issues, which is strange for a Sonic title.

The loading screens are a leftover of the PC version, which is odd. I guess it's logical that the PC version on a really old 1x CD-ROM would take a few seconds to load, but in Gems, the loading image flashes on screen for probably less than one full second.

Would've benefitted to just leave it a black screen, like the Sega CD version.

OMFGl What could've been :'(

At first I wasn't so disappointed, but now...why are they going with this currenty shitty "modern" design?

:lol

I've known about the Sonic 2 shortcut since near the time of release. I enjoy showing it to friends while I'm playing.

And now you realize the biggest reason why Sonic 2D > Sonic 3D.

Lots of secrettttts~~~

I started going back and playing Sonic CD and Sonic Triple Trouble last night, via Sonic Gems Collection on Gamecube.

Triple Trouble is fantastic! Very fun. Especially now with a save feature. There are some really great levels here.

Sonic CD, however, was worse than I remembered. The Time Travel gimmick really ruins the levels. Not to mention the terrible jump sound effect. However, it is really cool how Amy and Super Sonic appear in the levels, and by the time he kidnaps Amy, it surprises you. I am going to try to get the Time Stones this time, but I'd rather finish Triple Trouble first.

Also, I am also like SuperAngelo64. I used to be a Mario guy, and I didn't get into the Sonic franchise until the Gamecube. Other than a few exceptions, his list hits the nail on the head.

No Willy, just no.

PS: Sonic Genesis Advance is NOT worse than Sonic 06. Not by any stretch.

I could play Sonic 1 downgraded to the Atari 2600 with broken controls where the character only jumps once every 3rd time you push the button and it would still be better.

Yeah, about 2 pages ago, about 15 people's minds were blown about the shortcut in Act 2 of the Chemical Plant Zone that enables you to skip the mega muck segments(as well as get to the boss with a neat-o invincibility power-up).

I think it's because it doesn't actually matter. Could be wrong though :/

:0 I'll take a look at it when I get home from school. Awesome!

I don't really remember having trouble with Chemical Plant Zone. In fact, I remember dying more in Aquatic Ruin Zone's water sections.

And those were pretty easy compared to Sonic 1's Labyrinth Zone.

Ya get it by taking advantage of the ol' hedgehog physics.

BONUS TIP: Any time there's a hill or an upward slope in a 2D Sonic game, there's bound to be some sort of secret or alternate route attached to it.

Also, I wonder if everyone is aware of the fact that in Chemical Plant, you can switch directions while holding different directions of the d-pad when you're zooming through the speed pipes?

I always forget how many zones Sonic 2 had. I always forgot about zones like Aquatic Ruin and Hilltop.

I hope they can get emulate the Megadrive game mechanics. Even though you had speed, you never lost control.

Mario > Sonic. But only by a little.
To tell you the truth Mario shits all over Sonic now.

I mean Mario fans hate on Sunshine, the fucking awesomeness that is Sunshine!

I'm having difficulty coming up with a video game character that doesn't shit all over Sonic now.

Besides other shitty Sonic characters, of course.

I assume you mean Metal Sonic, as Super Sonic doesn't appear in Sonic CD. But yeah, Metal Sonic is cool. The 'boss fight' against him is definitely the best boss fight in Sonic CD IMO.

CPZ act 2 shortcut is great, as a kid I found the area using debug and then worked out where the entrance was by running backwards until I got to the wall, walked through it and then shat myself.

I thought of those, but I dunno...

I guess Sonic Rush keeps his nose above the dirty water.
They've done NOTHING right since the PS1, so yeah deeper levels into the diarrhea .

Ok my take of the heaven hell thing. As far as i know this is every Sonic game I've played.

A lot of the games fall somewhere in between.

I like the cut of your jib.

I have more fun with Sonic 1 and Sonic CD than Sonic 2/Sonic 3 myself(and that's why I just say "screw it!" and make them all equal).

But this list looks almost perfect.

Ranking Tails Adventure and Sonic 2 8-bit beneath Sonic Unleashed, Mario & Sonic Winter Olympics, Sonic R and others puts you on a list where you need to be looking over your shoulder for the rest of your life because I will harpoon you.

So what level tropes do y'all think will pop up in Sonic 4?

Green hill - Splash Hill Zone
?
?
?
?
?
Eggman base - E.G.G. Rocket Zone

I think an industrial level (CPZ), ruins type level (more akin to Tidal Tempest), casino/carnival/FUN! level, snow level, sand level.

Sonic 2 just barely edges out CD and 3&K for me because me and my sister played the 2 player mode in that every Sunday afternoon for about 3 years straight.

Some like the Rush games could shift about as I haven't played those much yet and some games like Tails Adventure and Chaotix I haven't played for years, so those are probably quite a rough estimate, but whatever. :lol

:lol I just remember having Tails Adventure as a kid and getting stuck in it pretty early on and not really getting it. Should play that again some time, it's on gems Collection isn't it?

(That and Sonic 2 8-bit just didn't feel right to me, like some wonky stepchild installment with all the levels in the wrong order. Again I haven't played that in ages though).

Can we stop posting that awesome fan-title screen please. I was almost at a point of tolerance before it broke my god damn heart :(

Currently on track to be a Sonic Advance 1/2 remake. The highest of aspirations!!

Brobzoid

how do I slip unnoticed out of a gloryhole booth?
I'm hoping for mystery caves and hilltop lookin' levels to make a return. maybe a lava level?

bonuspoint; do you seriously want to pretend that they aren't going to mine the nostalgia full force?

I'm still working on mine, but here's a preview...
zslevm.png

For the record, Sonic 06 is the only clunker that actually is in heaven on my list. Why? Because if we are choosing who goes where, then that technically makes us "god" when it comes to this, and I choose to be a merciful god who takes pity on this poor soul. Does that mean it's any good? Of course not, it's out of pity. The rest of the clunkers WILL feel my wrath though, trust me. As you can see though, The best regular Sonic game and the best speed Sonic game, are equal in my eyes, as different as they may be. Also notice that Rush Adventure is slightly lower than Rush. As for other edits, hell wasn't deep enough for some of the horrible clunkers on my list, so I had to improvise...

I'd love a level like jungle zone in Master System Sonic 1.

Man, Sega really is retarded. Would it kill them to have old-school Sonic in this game?

At this point, I just think it's a matter of Japanese pride getting in the way.

You could tie their hands up, force them to the ground, shove an AK-47 up against their head, and scream "BRING BACK THE ORIGINAL SONIC OR I'LL BLOW YOUR MOTHERFUCKING BRAINS ALL OVER THE FUCKING PAVEMENT"!!!!" and they still wouldn't bring back the dreaded 'gaijin' Sonic.

The first (well, second, if you count Crash Bash) non-ND Crash game was rather decent though. Well, except the insane load times in the PS2 version.
Twinsanity was fucking awesome, and the first non-ND Crash was good I really liked it.

All others are pure shit!

It's like they're trying to prove a point or something :lol

I think if we're to assume there's going to be three "episodes," they'll probably avoid remaking Splash Hill in each game for their first level.

So Episode 2 would have a beach level, and Episode 3 could have a jungle level.

The sad thing is fans of the classic Sonic are now most likely in the minority, so Sega are still trying to please their majority who make them the most money, even with this game which is supposed to be them throwing the minority a bone. The greedy execs probably stopped them from 'reversing the brand back' or some shit like that.

You know, completely ignoring all the classic sonic merchandise that's been released in the last two years or so, but I guess most of this stuff is mainly only here in Europe..

Gagaman said:

Yes, it is.

And I'm bloody tired of paying for bloody overseas shipping for it!!

Americans do get treated to some throw-back t-shirts at Hot Topic, though.

That's....kinda cool.

If you guys want that classic-style merchandise in the USA, go to a comic book shop, and order it from one of the many big catalogs. That's what I did a while back.
