Hey guys, I'm kinda new to Star Citizen (and pretty overwhelmed with information about the game), and I'm thinking about joining the GAF org. Are there any requirements to get in? Right now all I have is a Super Hornet.

'All I have', I imagine that's more than most :p

Oh. I imagined that most people had multiple ships at their disposal, with some larger ones in the mix here and there, lol.

I think most people have one ship from the 300, Mustang or Aurora series. You on the other hand have the most powerful fighter of them all :p

I got it because it looked cool, to be honest. >.> So is it cool if I join the org or do I need to be a full member here on GAF to jump in? Plenty of time to get to that point, I imagine, lol.

I would like to add more people to the org hierarchy as I am not active in this community at the moment - someone PMed me to request admittance recently and I found that there were quite a few people in the queue. There's not much to do but respond to invite requests right now. PM me if you want to volunteer.

Eh, I'd say it's a tie now between the SH and the Vanguard for the title of "most powerful fighter". Each has their strengths and weaknesses. Point still stands though. SH is more than what most people have.
Yeah unless they have redesigned the freelancer then that looks like a different ship. It just might be the Hull variant. They could look similar because they are made by same company.

I can't see that being a Hull. The Hull wouldn't have an open back gate. The spindle would be at the back of the cockpit area. The back end of the Hull is all engine, so it's not that either.

I traded in my Aurora for a Mustang, it is awful, fast and looks pretty but can't last in a fight. Went back to my trusty Aurora.

Batteries the CRISIS!
With all the redesigns on ships, hangars, environments, assets etc, is it safe to assume that the first 6-12 months of development don't count? So this game has actually only been in development for not even 2 years.

That's exactly what I think. Almost everything done between October 2012 and November 2013 (aside from crowdfunding, lolz) was wasted. It's even possible that the work Void Alpha was doing on Terra environments into spring 2014 was wasted effort. When the Austin team was reorganized to be the persistent universe studio and Void Alpha was kicked to the curb, all of that environment work (a year's worth!) may have been thrown out.

It's been really frustrating to watch as a Golden Ticket holder and original backer.

So yes, this game has not been in development for even two years. They basically didn't start trying until about November 2013 when they got their huge influx of cash and began working on the real version of the dogfighting module while the UK studio got ramped up to begin — begin — work on the single-player campaign.

[edit] We also can add in all the work that Chris Roberts did on his own dime with the Mexico City studio (CGBot) to build the assets for the crowdfunding videos (not just the flashy trailer but also the demo reels showing off "real physics" and whatnot) as being wasted. The models for the Hornet, Scythe and Bengal carrier were scrapped. Probably even the asteroids were scrapped. The videos made it seem like an engine was in place (beyond simply using CryEngine) but we know now that practically nothing had been done with the engine that could be kept in the final version of the game.

I'm not sure you can call it all waste. Things are learned from the past and applied to the future, and some things are simply required at the time even if you know you'll be tossing them down the road.

Looking at the windows in the front of the ship in the video you may be right. It does seem like a freelancer variant. Well if it is a freelancer I can personally attest to it not being a Freelancer DUR. Probably it is another variant. Maybe either the regular Freelancer or the MAX.

There is no point in scrapping assets. Assets can be reused and recycled. Even if they had to redesign and remodel the hornet, they won't have to do it from scratch, they would at least have a point of reference and that helps greatly in adding detail. You can thank the first year for laying the base work for the detail of this game which to date, is some of the most impressive I have seen in a game so far outside of games based on periods or locations that actually exist in real life.

Sure, hook me up. I sent a PM too, just quoting for visibility in case anyone else is interested.

Raticus79, Shy, and ASTROID2 were granted the ability to respond to requests and added to the list of people to PM for admittance.

If anything needs to be changed/addressed for the org you can easily reach me via PM; I still want to keep my attention away from this project. I don't think the org should be over-established before we even know how the game plays but I don't want to see it die out before it has the chance.

I forecast a post by ben at friday night 11 PM pdt. "We couldn't manage it guys, looks like next week!"

I was really thinking that they weren't going to make it with the Hull update. Quite amazed they managed to get it out - and without glaring spec issues to boot. [1]

Everything they do basically comes in hot. Most companies would sit on an update or event and go over it in detail to make sure nothing is wrong before publicly announcing their intentions. Then the only thing that can go wrong is unforeseen technical glitches when they actually release the update/news. CIG, on the other hand, announces their intentions before the thing that they're intending is finished (sometimes I get the feeling it's not even started).

I mean, I appreciate the rapid and free flowing information, and the excitement they have in keeping everybody involved, but they'd really be better served by tightening things up just a bit. Make sure they have their ducks in a row and then tease. Don't get me wrong, I still want them to be open and everything, but just be a tad more professional and befitting of a company with over $80 million raised.

That all said, why am I seriously looking at the Hull C now?! The design has started to grow on me - those 4 pods around the front, and the engine symmetry... I don't need a 10th ship. I wasn't even planning on doing cargo runs before. Yet this stupid ship is starting to appeal to me.

Edit:
[1] I spoke too soon. They did screw up the specs again. If nothing else, they're consistent in this. =P

i just want my fps module because I am shit at dogfighting
I'm really looking forward to it because of a really annoying bug that won't let me remap the controls the way i like on my 360 pad, so i don't play the dog fighting module.

And it looks really cool, hope i'm not shit at it, like i am with other FPS games.

It makes me cry because it's true.

Batteries the CRISIS!
Has there been any mention of what this is going to do yet? I haven't been keeping up with all of the announcements

Well, I've had a piece of flair in my hangar since hangars were implemented (it's a 3D Golden Ticket sitting in the trophy case). Golden Ticket holders get into CIG events early like subscribers and high-dollar backers do. The ticket itself says that it entitles holders to "a very special equipment package," but CIG hasn't mentioned what that would be (and I suspect has forgotten about it).

That's about it.

Has there been any hints/updates since the March report on who the actors for SQ42 are? Figure something must have slipped out with the motion capture filming going on now.

Not that I've heard.

I'm sure they got Mark Hamill, though — that dude hasn't done anything since Wing Commander Prophecy. /s

Just got around to the Hull Q&A and see this hasn't been brought up here yet despite the conversation on it.
“If you shoot the cargo containers do they spew cargo into space when they rupture? If you target the racks can you detach them from the ship as it’s moving?” – Marcus Murphy

We’re aware that the ‘spindle’ looks like the weak point of the Hull series, but do not intend for this to carry over into the game mechanics. The cargo containers will be fully shielded and will themselves have an armor value; those that wish for additional protection can use containers that trade armor for space. (But hey, what kind of pirate risks destroying their loot in the first place?)
Looks like external storage will be as secure as internal storage. (Well, at least as secure in the aspect that the spindles wont break - technically the crates still can be destroyed.) The Hull series is that much more attractive now.

“Can the hull ships carry smaller starfighters (packed or configured as cargo) such as the Super Hornet?” – queetz

Yes! Spacecraft can be broken down into their component parts for transport, or carried in their completed forms aboard larger Hulls. There is also a ‘midget fighter attachment’ being developed for the Hull E which will allow it to drop and recover escort fighters in exchange for cargo space.

Built in escort wing... damn thing is getting close to a carrier. Now in a similar line of thinking, can you pack a Hornet with a pilot already in it? If so, the Hull E could be a veritable Trojan horse. Hull E shows up, deploys all cargo, and then you have dozens of otherwise short range Hornets ready to swarm a target.

Gonna get a Hull E and call it the Hornet's Nest.

Yep, I'm good with keeping the Freelancer max :)

I find it amusing that in the Hull B Q&A they have the updated cargo capacities, but in the same article they have the old cargo capacity for the Hull B listed as well. They seriously need to get their ship stats viewer thing up to date.

At any rate, the updated list makes the Hull C that much more tempting for me. Any less capacity and I'd be better off using my Carrack or Connie. Anything more and it gets to be ridiculous. So it comes down to either the Hull C or the Banu MM for a heavy duty hauler, and I prefer how the C is designed.

Edit:
Remember, TR rating indicates thrust and not size! For the entire hull series, especially efficient thrusters are required, as they may be required to push up to 16 times the mass of the ship.
So TR ratings are thrust and not size. Every other number rating on the ship stats, on the other hand, relates to size and not quality. They need to pick a system and stick to it.

Edit 2: Somebody already covered that in the comments. Glad I wasn't imagining that somebody said that TR was size at one point...
Hey Ben, the answer about thrusters doesn't make sense. You yourself posted this in the Connie Q&A thread:
Q. What happened to the Phoenix’s TR7 engine?
A. The TR7 engine briefly listed on the page was a typo; a TR7 engine would be far too large for a ship the size of the Constellation! (For comparison, the Bengal strike carrier has TR7 engines!)
So what is it, is TR size based or not?

I have to constantly remind myself this game is much bigger and more diverse than one would think.

Take that image and then the fact that the in-engine stuff they've shown has so far has lived up pretty well to the concept art. I can't wait to see the first war torn area in game. It's going to be interesting to see if they can keep up the quality/detail in the long run though.
