Star Trek Online Free to Play |OT| Boldly freeloading where others have subbed before

Is there any point to casual exploration in this game? I like the sound of getting into a scrap with the Romulans.

You can randomly wander around and blow ships up in areas or take on exploration missions which basically involve traveling an area and doing 3 randomly generated generic missions

That Jem'hadar fighter. Shhhhhiiiiiiit. I will do anything to get it. Apparently it was limited to a winter special event? Anyone have any idea how I can get one?

Yeah, that was one of the prizes you could win when Q was showing up at Earth Spacedock and allowing you to visit the Q Continuum during their Winter Holiday special race event that occured shortly before the official F2P.

There are other ways to get this ship, but it's such a rare commodity that it's being sold at ridiculously high prices at the Access Exchange.

What other ways?

What is it going for on the Exchange?

Leveling in this game is so slow. Or maybe I just suck, but I am new. I'm like about to hit level 6. Mostly just travel time between worlds and space. Since my ship is kinda slow.

How are you questing? If you do the main storyline Episodes, I think you get better XP than doing side quests.

So how is everyone going about the money grind? I've just been going around a sector that's filled with anomalies and getting into fights with random raiders here and there, who often drop some decent starship equipment, then selling that off for EC. Still have no idea how to get latinum or dilithium yet. Still just chugging along in my starter ship, but now with quantum torpedoes and a disruptor array for some reason.

If you increase the difficulty setting, you also get better loot drops so you might make more money that way. However, the game gets harder and you might not be able to handle it.

It's not on the exchange, and it's not likely to go on there any time in the foreseeable future. It's actually a CBS issue. They don't want the game to be filled with Federation (or Klingon, for that matter) captains flying around in Jem'Hadar ships. According to an interview the lead design guy did recently, the only way CBS would let Cryptic allow players to have a ship like that is if they could guarantee it would be extremely rare. He outright said they will never directly sell that ship...

But, that's with the current situation. If they make a third faction, then who knows. Of course, that's a long time off. One idea they've tossed around is introducing another faction as more of a 'mini-faction'. He gave the example of a Romulan one (with Remans and Hirogen, too), and when you finished those 10 levels you'd get the option to sign up with either Feddies or Klingons. It's pretty much just a random idea they've talked about, not anything they have any kind of real plans for, but it's a possibility. One of the reasons he was excited about doing it was to let players get those awesome Romulan ships, so I suppose it's possible they'd try to bring in some other interesting ships, too.

Are the Jem'Hadar ships even good? How do they compare to Federation ships?

I'm still pretty new to the game, but judging from that chart, they look almost overpowered. They have the same amount of weapon slots as a top-tier escort, with higher speed, maneuverability and hull. The only thing it lacks is more science console slots.

Well i finally fired this beast up and thus far I have been impressed with the visuals, have found controlling my ship frustrating and accidentally chose the wrong officer to join my crew. Outside of that it has been fun tho and definitely worth the $0.00 i paid. Now I just need to fleet up with some gaffers to carry my ass......I mean do missions with.

I believe you also have to be at least a certain level to even pilot the Jem'Hadar fighter, I think a Rear Admiral lower half at least.

The ship is comparable to the escort classes for Rear Admiral I reckon. Don't even bother trying to buy the ship off the Access Exchange, people know since it is a very very rare ship they are selling them for millions and millions of energy credits, will take you forever to get that kinda dough.

The only way you are going to progress faster is by HAILING STARFLEET and seeing what mission episodes they have for you.

Controlling ships is fun for me. What are you frustrated by? If it's turn speed, different ships have different turns speeds. Big heavy ships are SUPPOSED to turn slowly.

You turn fastest at 1/4 Impulse speed. Any faster or slower and I find you turn at suboptimal speed for your ship.

I love collecting ship parts that mod your ship's look... since I spend the majority of time in space, I want that thing tricked out.

When I first completed a mission, I was given a Reman prototype Covariant Shield Array... not realizing what effect it would have on my ship's look so I ended selling it for some quick energy creds. But after looking at what it does, I redid the mission I got the item from and modded my ship again. Gives a nice cyan bloom glow and changes the textures of the armor too.

Added Sir Fragula and Sickboy. What's happening with the GAFleet?

Also, what does the number mean next to the persons picture when you click them? Mine is 0, but I've seen low level people with -2, and higher level people with a red 44 etc.

The numbers when you click on another person or ship represents the number of levels or ranks away from you that character is. If you were both level 10, you would see 0, but if that person was say level 20, you would see 10 instead etc.

Of course.

Also, I just got my first batch of Duty Officers, but for some reason I can't make my civilian diplomat dude active?

Currently playing The Old Republic, but I really am thinking of downloading this right now and coming over. Is it honestly worth it, guys? I have always been a big Trek fan, but I want to know if this is a quality MMO.

Does it have instances and such?

Worth it? It's F2P, so yeah.

A quality MMO? Not really. It's quite thin and very instance-y, there's almost no exploration at all, and the ground combat is pretty much laughed at by everyone (although I kinda like it). Space battles can be really cool, though, and overall the game got it's moments, but if they didn't go f2p, it would be dead by next year, at latest.

It's not a good enough game at all to subscribt, but it's a great f2p model and absolutely worth a few microtransactions if you happen to like it.

Of course, everything just IMO and based on half a month of P2P and a few hours of F2P

edit: It doesn't have your typical raid instances, the whole game is made out of little instances. You don't actually have a large, connected world like in most MMOs.

IMO it's very fun and very Star Trek feeling. Definitely give it a try. Ship combat in particular is a rather unique experience and is the reason most of us play it.

How much have you played? I've gotten 23 levels in the 2 or so days since F2P. Though granted, I was playing for most of the day. Kills + Main Episode quests give almost enough XP for a level so doing that and a few hodgepodge of things on top of duty officers will get you up quickly.

I wonder if anyone bothers with Tactical officers. Trek fans probably all pick Engineer or Science. The Tactical officers on the shows were mostly phaser fodder.

The reman shield looks amazing, i'm currently speeding through the romulan questline to get it, and normally i take my time with quests.

Said it yesterday in game, but they need to make that shield part of a set. Looks great on the Captains Yacht and the D'Kyr...

When I chat it says "Saayli@HobocidalManiac". That's what you need to add as a friend, right?

Yes! Will do so tonight, about 20:00 England time.

News on the Fleet front: we tried faffing around with it last night, but it seemed to error that one of our party was too new to the game or something. I'm looking into it still though, and of course every new person on the friends list makes it more likely there'll be five of us on at the same time to make the Fleet. :)

My CE box should get here today from Amazon. I'm not a huge fan outside of the movies but the space battles and ship customization look fun. I guess I'll juggle this and ToR.

Couple of days, but not full days. I mostly just do quests. I think I did one or two of the Klingon episodes, the rest it says I'm not high enough in level to start them. For some reason I only have 2 duty officers so far. Something about level 7 unlocks the duty officer system, so like I can pick and choose who I want?

About chatting, Silver tier doesn't get to chat in /zone at all? I thought maybe it unlocks after a certain time spent in the game. Couple times I wanted to say something in a zone, but not local. No big deal I guess.

I achieved the rank of Lt. Commander today and finally got to choose a new vessel. I went for the Excalibur class, but I didn't have enough time to try it.

Does anyone know what the point is of collecting all the various samples and data? They're clogging up my inventory.

Can craft things at Memory Alpha with them.

Also just hit Lt. Commander today. So happy with my new Nova.

I hope I get a new ship soon, I'm still in my starter ship, though being a Silver member I doubt I get much options.

You get all the same options.

The only locked ship options cost money regardless of subscription status, and are typically equal trade off stats not superior. Well, the premium retrofit ships tend to be better lookin designs.

Ugh, was in the middle of choosing a class/race and server had to shut down lol :(

I'll post my details later about the GAFleet invite

Put in some time and got to Lv 4(I think).

So far it feels great, nice visuals and music. Travelling around and exploring sectors and doing small missions feels like Star Trek. Ship combat is kind of fun(don't understand all of it) with juggling shields and trying to get in position. Guessing this will get more tactical as the game progresses.

Nothing to complain about the ground missions. Limited outside the story ones, yes, but still kind of fun. I guess it's STOs collect 10 boar pelts, quick and easy.

Loving all the scanning. Even if it's a simple mechanic it's very Trek.

Don't understand the economy or the leveling system yet and some items are just confusing. Got loads of alien artifacts and stuff which I apparently can craft but don't really know why I would do that.

Login servers are down for me right now but I guess the name is character@ship?

If so, please send an invite to Setwa@Menelik

Edit. If it's character@account make it to Setwa@Setwa

Ok, so after a few hours of play:

  • A full bridge team (2 tacticals, 1 science, 1 engineering)
  • A slightly upgraded starter ship
  • 300 or so 'credits'
  • A hodge podge collection of weapons and personal items

At what point can I start collecting dilithium?
