Star Trek Online Free to Play |OT| Boldly freeloading where others have subbed before

I know this might sound like a stupid question but is there any way to get rid of the Skill Up button that keeps glowing under my XP bar? For some reason it's still there even though I put my points in my skills and crew skills.

Time to share ship and character piccies

Here's my ship, the U.S.S. Malevolent, a Hermes class advanced fleet escort ship outfitted with assimilated Borg technology docked at Deep Space Nine with the Wormhole showing in all its glory.

My character is a Jem'Hadar, Vice Admiral, he's wearing an Admiral garb.

I want a new ship. ;( I guess the people with $$$$ get the cool ships. I hate the one you start out with, so small. Might as well be a shuttle craft.

For someone who is completely new to MMOs, it does feel overwhelming upon reaching the space station orbiting Earth. The number of different options available from the start is kind of exhausting to decipher. And I've also noticed that if you made a mistake and want to change your character in any way, they make you pay for it. I've completed the mission involving the Azure, but I might wait to become a subscriber before continuing. I think that I enjoy the game enough to make a longer commitment to it. I especially like the tactical elements of ship combat. Even in the early stages of the game, I can see the potential of it.

The only way to properly get the "cool" new ships is to keep levelling up, cuz you need to be a certain level to even pilot those cool ships.

I may also wanna point out, that veterans of this game before the F2P are given a special percentage bonus in XP, so if you were to do a mission that gives a certain amount of XP, you get a certain % increase depending how long you were a veteran before this.

For example, I am considered a 200 day veteran, so I got a 3% increase of XP per time I got any XP's. Which may be why I was flying through the ranks at breakneck speed compared to my first time through.

What are the veteran thresholds?

Just wondering, does STO change everyone's monitor to a bluish color calibration? I have a default color calibration profile that I set myself with a Blu-Ray calibration disk, but every time I run STO, the screen goes black for a second and comes back on with a very bluish color. I know it's doing that because when I minimize the screen changes back to my default color scheme.

It does this no matter what mode I am in, be it widescreen, windowed, or that borderless windowed mode.

Please help!!!

Any way to get this on Steam right now?

The awful download client I got off their site won't download anything.

Can I delete that Pando thing after I've installed STO and gotten all the patches and whatnot?

EDIT: Also how do I swing the camera around to show the front of my character to take screenshots? My character always turns with the camera.

If you bought it on Steam in the past you can still redownload via your library. Otherwise, you have to wait until they do their official F2P launch on Steam.

They're delaying the F2P launch on Steam to give them a chance to work out the kinks from the general F2P launch. The Steam launch will probably add far more users than this silent launch did, since people will actually know about it.

Can anyone upload the Star Trek Online.exe for me please? It seems that my launcher is busted and it won't let me update.

edit: Nevermind. Found an old exe and it worked.

Started playing today, did the tutorial, USS Azura and a few of the "go here" missions. Like it so far! Ship combat took me a while to get used to, but slowly getting there. I found it's a bit cumbersome to use to mouse steer function so usually use my left hand to move/fire and the mouse to select ships and use some functions.

Ground combat is pretty simple.

I still don't really "get" the leveling up system, and I've been assigning some skills kinda arbitrarily. Should be okay though. Graphics are nice enough.

When playing STO, one hand always rests on the arrow keys to transfer power to the shields.

This game feels like a really good example of some great top-down design. I love how they took things like transferring power to forward shields or firing a Tachyon beam or taking "evasive action" and converted them into actual game mechanics. The entire game is like that, and its one reason why the jankier parts of it get a pass from me. I feel like I'm in Star Trek

The internet told me this was going to be available via Steam, but I don't see it. What gives?

The F2P relaunch on Steam is going to be delayed a bit, they did the silent F2P launch without much marketing to make for a smoother transition and so they can get a sense of how much server capacity they need. Once they put it on Steam and get a main page splash, it's going to boost player population a lot more.

So I just hit Lt. Commander and I was able to buy the first rank of a second tier skill for my captain, but now I can't buy any more even though I have enough skill points. This goes for both space and ground skills. Can anyone tell me why I can't put more points in?

Are you maintaining a split between space and ground? You have to spend about 1/4 of your points on ground stuff. At the bottom it should tell you the max number of points you can spend on space skills and the max you can spend on ground skills. If you only have, say, 500 points that you're allowed to spend on space, it won't let you buy the next level even if you have more points.

Well I guess i will check out the game now. Not a fan of MMOs in general, but the Star Trek setting and it being free is enough for me to give it a shot.

STO definitely feels very Star Trek. It's great how they made diverting power to shields/engines/weapons a game mechanic.

Made it to level 22 already so I'm gonna take a short break before I go for Captain a bit more casually. I hate the Lt Cmdr ships on the whole so I just had to push through it.

Trucking through gettin' things done. Completed the first few missions in the first ep, currently in the Paulson nebula or something. I like it so far. Definitely different to WoW.

Learning the ropes, slowly. If anyone wants to show me how it's done some time, my name is Mgurk@resnarf.

I hope they give us some sense of how much the user base increased when they went F2P, and then how much it goes up again once it's relaunched on Steam.
