STEAM | January 2015 - Steam GOTY results: Delayed

They did this just because of the PS4 version, since they know it'll get a lot of sales there and having a 3 on it would hurt more than anything since the other 2 were never on the system.

I personally don't care what it's called. Could be Geralt Gets Naked with the witch and I'll play it if it's good.

I didn't expect this.

That kind of makes sense, though, I guess.

I feel it's also slightly more acceptable considering the change from linear action RPG to open-world, I suppose.

Was linked to the the Cook, Serve, Delicious behind the scenes on Gamasutra. I know the dev posts here from time to time and it's a pretty honest and intense look at the lead up to the Battle Kitchen edition release, as well as sales figures for an indie dev (part of the overall article).

What followed was one of the most miserable experiences of game making I have ever, ever faced. By 3am I was completely spent, having coded for nearly 20 straight hours. There was absolutely no way I could stop; the entire game was taken apart to implement Battle Kitchen and, at the bare minimum, I had to put it back together for the game to even run.

The extreme dose of caffeine kept me completely awake but my mind was pretty much shut down. It was the strangest experience I’ve ever felt; I was quite literally a zombie. I took additional pills and drinks at that time; by 5am my work had slowed to a crawl. At one point I couldn’t even do simple calls to place text on a screen, as I couldn’t remember how.

I sat there in front of the screen, unable to type, the minutes ticking away, the deadline looming over me, and I nearly broke down. I had to scream in my pillow and take a cold shower just to squeeze any small amount of juice I had left.

I uploaded the build and collapsed into bed at 2pm, a few hours past deadline and not as a full release, but still, I had made it. Twenty minutes later, my phone was buzzing off the hook. A quick glance showed a horrifying glimpse into the Steam CSD forums. The game was completely broken...

And so begun the era of "CDPR can't count to three."

Gotta appease the ignorant masses, lest they begin to shun something they already don't understand.

Now the clock's ticking for Geralt's redesign so he can be a proper AAAA+ video game protagonist. I smell another delay.

... and when it finally comes out we'll have to climb windmills to uncover map segments ;)

Because this deserves a lot more attention (and to everyone who missed it :p):

Monster Boy, an spiritual successor (although devs consider it "official") to the Wonder Boy / Monster World games is coming this year to PC and PS4 (and "more")!

This one is being developed by indie studio The Game Atelier, and it was known before as Flying Hamster II, a game with gameplay inspired by the franchise, but now rebranded as something more official. Series creator Ryuichi Nishizawa is working with them.

As a fan of the WB/MW franchise, I'm just so happy. Best news so far this year for me.

This needs to be pre-purchaseable yesterday. Wonder Boy in Monster World is one of my all-time favourites.

That bothered me so much during the movie, I don't know what they were thinking.

I'm in for Never Alone and I just noticed the price on Virtua Tennis 4! Now to decide if I want Grim Fandango on PC or PS4...

I've been wanting to pick up Virtua Tennis 4 so I went ahead and bought it. I'm a sucker for a good tennis game and since this is the only option for PC that I know of that makes the decision pretty easy.

Hey guys I have some great news. I turn 30 today and while that is not that good, I bought my 1st house. It's a studio apartment so nothing too big. After many years of saving and some help from my parents
and a loan
I finally have my own place.

To celebrate I'd like to give a few games away. Though I wanted to give something a little more expensive this is all I can do for now. Plus region locking does not help.

Have at it

Congrats!

Oh man, the Raven's Cry Digial Deluxe edition does include the in-game songs.

Raven's Cry Store Page said:
All 8 classic pirate songs, including the traditional Irish and Mexican lyrics, including Whisky in a Jar, Hanging Willie aka Drunken Sailor, La Bamba, Da-YO aka Bananaboat Song and more

Hanging Willieeeeeeeeeeee yesssssssssssssssssssss

Monster Boy

Neat. This is one that I'll be keeping an eye on, though I missed out on the whole Wonder Boy series(NES kid).

On a different note, people were right in saying that the Aqua Ring in REmaster looks terrible. Shame too, since that was one of my favorite areas in the original GC version. There's like only one scene in the lower level that looks somewhat decent. It's not a huge deal, but the game has been quite a looker up to this point, so the difference was jarring.

Just got through the first episode of Doctor Who: The Adventure Games. I haven't got through the whole game, but since it is episodic I'd say it counts, so here are some impressions.

WARNING: As with all games related to movie and show tie-ins, my full disclosure as far as pop culture knowledge is concerned: I only have a passing interest in Doctor Who. I saw most of the First Doctor's stuff in black and white in the early morning when I was a kid, kinda got bored of it as it went into the Second Doctor, and have seen a few episodes here and there of the Ninth through Eleventh doctors (and the Eleventh is the star of this game.) So I have some familiarity with the characters and villains and such, but it's by no means extensive. So keep that in mind with these impressions.

The story, dialogue and voices: The story was simplistic, with probably the most well-known of any of the Doctor Who enemies. Your first destination puts you conveniently in medias res and sets up a big plothole right away, but does nicely explain smaller associated plotholes and give me flashbacks to the Back to the Future series. Your job is to stop the bad guys, usually by picking up MacGuffins from guarded corridors. The dialogue is quite good. It sounds very Doctor Who-esque, especially Amy Pond's dialogue: in other words, she says "Wot?" in different inflections quite a bit. Karen Gillan does a good job of her voice acting. Matt Smith is good about half the time, and the other half he's totally phoning it in and/or sounds like he recorded the lines after being woken up at 3am with nothing but a liquid breakfast to get him going. It made me want to rewatch an episode to see if he's always that monotone.

The gameplay: Calls itself "the Adventure Games" but the actual point-and-click elements have been really pared down. the inventory has four item slots, one of which is your sonic screwdriver which is always there. In other words, you're not gonna pick up more than three things at any one time, and you don't automatically combine things - if you have to put two items together you have to do a maze minigame. Okay, so if it's not so much a point and click, then what is it?
It's mostly stealth action. Wait a minute...stealth action...point and click pared down...focus on dialogue...
This feels familiar. Only with worse graphics (and we'll get to that shortly.) Now I'm gonna say a few phrases, and you're gonna tell me what's wrong with this picture.
Stealth. Tank controls. Missable collectibles. No manual saving.
Insert your guess here
Yes, folks, it's exactly what it sounds like. Stumble around corridors with bad controls, try to go out of your way to find stuff, and if you don't find it, you pretty much have no choice but to restart the episode from the beginning. Sounds fun, right? ...Wot? Oh.
Once you enter a stealth section you automatically change from a run to a walking crawl, unless you're detected in which case you can run. Running can save you about half the time. Makes me wonder if getting myself detected on purpose just so I can run through is a valid strategy. The gameplay's one saving grace is that it saves when you pick up a collectible, so if you die you don't have to collect it again a la Bionic Commando. The fact that I even point this out as a positive should be telling.

The length: the first episode took me 76 minutes, apparently, but take off a couple of minutes because graphical options only change once you quit the game, and it "helpfully" sets your graphics to medium as a default. Assume the first four episodes are about the same length, and the fifth is apparently longer, and I'm going to estimate a total time of 7-8 hours. Normally I'd say, "that's pretty good for an adventure game," but now I'm thinking "oh god please let the next episodes be more adventure and less janky-ass stealth."

The graphics: They're quite good for a game made in 2005. ...Wot? It was made in 2011? Oh. Okay, that's not TOTALLY fair. The Daleks look exactly how you'd expect them to, but how hard could it be to fuck up a Dalek? The Doctor and Amy are...recognizable...but they could have done a much better job. The environments get their point across, but little more than that. But my comparison to the aforementioned game holds up: that game was made in 2006 and looks good. This game looks like they hired the best of the best from the 3d western porn-game artists.

The music: Does it have the theme song from the show? Wot? It does? Okay, it gets a pass and I won't say anything negative because that's one fine theme.

The verdict: If future episodes go better I'll amend my statements. But outside of the fun dialogue, I am finding it hard to see how anyone could have fun with it. (The Steam achievements seem to back up my statement: 25% finished the first episode, and less than 5% finished the whole game. A point and click game where less than 1 in 20 people see the end is pretty damning.) If you still want to play this game I've got just one thing to say: Wot?

The Title written in the description & FAQ. Logo still has the stylized "3" that is also the helmet of the bad guy.

Logo still has the 3 lines in it though. I guess we'll know if they're really moving away from calling it the third game in the witcher series soon enough

They probably dropped the 3, because you don't have to play the first 2 games anyway and people might not pick it up because they don't know that.

Can't see the graphics you're referring to, but if it's about the '3' that was the previous logo used before they changed to the 'III' design a while ago. Unless it was some other graphic I'm not aware of.

Its a fake baby doll. They had hired two infants but for some reason they didn't work out, so 190 year old director Clint Eastwood snapped and force the actor to use a dollar store baby doll as a prop to do the scene.

Breaking news: Clint Eastwood hates babies, prefers fake ones.

There is one point where the baby's arm is animatronic and moves vaguely up and down for one shot. It was kind of terrible.

well then ...

It'll be interesting to see how good it is. None of their previous games has a good review or is more than 20 bucks, but here they are jumping right in to a AAA-priced title. It's certainly ambitious, and there's probably a fair share of people who will buy pirate anything. Looking forward to impressions!

Not the graphic, compare how the game is written in the description & faq.

Main difference is that there is no more number 3 in the text name. Logo is same with 3 lines as before.
