A lot of people on Twitter were posting their top tens recently too. I think it's sort of like:

Urien
Guile
Balrog
Laura
Cammy
Necalli
Ibuki
Bison
Gief
Karin

The top tier is essentially dominated by characters who can thrive off of opportunities to mix you up, characters with super solid tools and characters with explosive damage output and comeback potential. Urien easily falls under at least two of those categories, which effectively makes him the best character in the game. Once you get past Cammy...I dunno. Like I said, I feel like the tiers beyond the top five are so heavily constricted at the moment that you can easily swap a lot of people around without changing things too much. Like for instance, I feel like there's probably not a whole heck of a lot of difference between guys like Rashid, Mika, Karin, Gief and Bison in terms of strength, so you can probably move them around as you like and it would still work.

what's everyone's bottom 5 in the game right now?
Alex, Fang, Nash, Vega, Ryu

Juri is a weird character that I really have a hard time placing, but if any of the bottom five had to switch places with her it'd probably be Vega. He is on a whole other level compared to Alex, Fang and Nash imo.

You know, I hope Guile's V-Skill and/or V-Trigger come back in a future game as new special moves for him.

I know the idea of giving Guile more than two moves is kind of insane and that they basically managed to get away with it in this game because the V-system is universal, but still. His V-stuff just meshes too well with his existing moves and his overall game plan to simply relegate it to one game.

SFV has more noticeable tier whoring than any other game though. Probably because nobody is playing it casually.
Should be the case considering how easy it is to pick up characters, but I can't think of any game that had more tier whoring than SFIV:AE. Almost everyone who didn't main Yun/Yang/Fei had a pocket Yun/Yang/Fei. Elena alone seen more tier whoring than any SFV character so far and that was in SFIV's best balanced version.

My win rate is so bad in S2. But then I go look into my Killer Instinct which is 60% with Saberwulf. Has there ever been a fighting game where characters gotten nerf so hard that people drop them? I'm not talking about just Sean but
SFIV, SF3s, many GGXX revisions, UMVC3, SF2, etc.

What I thought would be my favorite part of the game is quickly becoming what's ruining it. CC spam is the worst.
It is still one of my favorite SF mechanics. Some characters like Urien and Balrog got dumb CCs, though. Crush counters that can be evaded (ducked like Alex f.HP) or need to be used at specific distances (Karin's st.HK) give you a good idea of what to expect up close. Even though I don't like Necalli I think they also got the right idea with AA crush counters. That'll really discourage someone from mindlessly jumping in too much.

I think it's pretty obvious that the story mode we got wasn't what they originally wanted. If you look at the cinematic trailer, it implies that the final battle was going to be a fight between Nash + everyone else vs. Bison, where Nash and Bison finish each other off, all while Ryu was supposed to take on Necalli while being forced to confront the satsui no hado. Dunno what happened to the development, but they clearly just threw whatever they had together and called it a day.
I'm in this group.

Yeah, I've come to the same conclusion. Characters get slight nerfs and players immediately drop them and it must have to do with the minimal time investment one needs to put in to be good with a character. I guess in other games one could always hope they'd find some hidden tool they could make use of if they grinded it out.

I don't know if we'll see many character specialists with SFV except for people like Smug who have to play boxers if they're available.

Laura is for sure Top 5, at the very very least. She's showing up in way too many lists.

Guiles, I see some of them. I'm surprised FR didn't have a rush of top tier characters in general. Only saw like two or so Bisons and people should not be sleeping on that character.

Nah, I think a lot of people aren't going to invest time in another character depending on their playstyle. Art and Champ aren't leaving Sim, Tokido isn't leaving Akuma, Mike isn't leaving Laura, Rog will never leave Rog even if he ever got nerfed, Fuudo isn't leaving Mika, and I doubt Ita or Stu are ever going to leave Gief even without his numerous buffs. People keep pretending like Ricki and Chun are BFFs, but Ricki has been known to drop characters in her time no problem.

I do think more people are looking at secondaries if time and skills allow, but that's kind of the natural evolution of the game. And as far as sticking with a character for new tech, that probably won't happen, but what will happen is the application of dealing with certain matchups to make their chances better, like 3F jabbing out of Rog's OH mixups now.

Nobody is playing SFV casually?

Nobody is playing SFV.

Final Round didn't even have that many Laura's, Uriens, or Rogs though.

The first tournament of the year should not give any indication how good characters are. Though I'm surprised that people were sleeping on Ibuki when she can press one button and do her V-Trigger and Win.

Goddamn it, I wanted to play a few matches before I went to work and got THREE boosters in a row. Fucking bullshit that Capcom doesn't do anything about those assholes. Had to leave without facing a single person.

What I do to troll them (as best as one can, when no one is watching) is to hit them a few times, and then let time run out. Waste as much as their time as possible, while I go get a sandwich or something. It's not much, but it slows down their progress a tad.

That sucks. Was this Ranked or Casual? I don't think I've seen a booster in Ranked since I imagine it would tank their league levels.

Yeah casuals, boosters want their ranks to be high so they get higher ranked opponents and thus more XP from the loss. In hindsight I should've switched to Ranked, but Ranked can make me salty and I didn't want to sour my day right off the bat.

Boosters have ruined casuals for me, so I'm stuck with battle lounge (which is okay) and ranked (the salty playground).
Hopefully they fix it in the future...
they won't though

Actually, if you really want to troll them, then "rage-quit". You are kicked out of match-making when you lose the connection to your opponent, so that'll stop their tomfoolery until they manually queue up for matches again.

Of course, you can't do that too often on account of the rage-quit penalty.

To add to that, V-Trigger Necalli was supposedly some kind of genius which wasn't utilized at all in the cinematic story mode.

Hailing from a mysterious background, Necalli utilizes a wild, animalistic fighting style to brutalize his opponents. There's no finesse here as all of his attacks have been forged through the heat of battle to inflict maximum pain upon his opponents. However, beneath the surface of the crazed warrior lies a hidden genius that is unleashed upon V-Trigger activation.

Yeah, it bugged me that blurb amounted to nothing. I expected the inverse of the trope of fighter giving into a dark power that turns him into fighting like a mindless beast (Evil Ryu). A guy that pops V-Trigger and suddenly switches his personality into someone who can speak complete sentences would have been interesting. In fact, the opposite happens because he gets a new walk animation in V-Trigger where he's on all fours.

i wanna see the "brain activity meme" with the final stage being gorilla walking

You love CC spam? I'm sorry you feel that way too.

I don't refer to this type of things as "spam". People use a core set of moves alot, any game. This game, some have it better than others. When I am playing against boxer, I just be patient and block and work around the move. Maybe this stuff should be addressed (probably), but I don't think it's outrageous.

I like the CC system in general.

Call me crazy I always got the sense that Necalli is supposed to be pretty smart. Stuttering, while a curious trait for a character like him, is not a sign of stupidity, and most of his dialogue is written in a fairly lyrical, articulate way. If you take away the stuttering from some of his win quotes, they basically read like the sort of thing refined, well-spoken villains in fiction (like say, Dr. Doom) usually say. The fact that he dresses like a caveman and walks like an animal while in V-Trigger kinda obscures that.

My headcanon is now Necalli is an anxiety-ridden shut-in who devotes all of his time to working out and building his cosplay outfit.

Necalli is an Aztec grim reaper. It's weird everyone beats him and no one seems interested in his powers of he's some Ancient superpower.

Balrog's is the only one you have to fear because it's plus OB and catches jump if pressed again. If only jumps are one frame faster and not be stuck in the corner.
What is it witg you and jumping? This is already the jumpiest SF. Jesus.
