I agree that this season has been sorely lacking this kind of character development. We got halfway there last episode with Parrish finally discovering appropriate attire for hunks. (Sweat and grease, plus any shade of grime that complements tanned skin). How long will we have to wait for Theo to join him? I'm not worried, though. It's Theo. He shows up where he's needed. And he helps.
So have I tbh. He would have killed it.
You know how you can't trust most people until they've showed you the rippling muscles beneath their soaking wet tank top? Well I've trusted Theo from the beginning, and that part in one of the earlier episodes where he did a Parrish and briefly lost his clothes after being a wolf or whatever confirmed that my assessment was completely accurate. But less perceptive viewers and characters possibly still have doubts about him. I think the time has come for Theo show everyone, even the most hardened skeptics, that he has nothing to hide. That's right: it's time for a beach party episode.
A vital part of the skill set of every Teen Wolf hunk.

It must be a cruel ruse by the writers. Natalie is a classy lady, but Sheriff Stilinski and Mama McCall are clearly made for each other. The chemistry is real. They are the two raddest parents on the show. It just makes sense. Oh, and if they get married, Scott and Stiles will officially be family. It's perfect.
I bet Stilinski could manage to bully Parrish into jumping out of a giant cake naked.

I don't have any issues with Natalie, she seems like a cool mom too, (she was great during the outbreak episode) but this felt like a Jeff Davis "well, you want this and I teased it forever but now I'm doing something else instead" type situation, which is sometimes necessary (you can't just give fan exactly what they want), but at other times is just a needless ruse to drum up drama. And in this case, I'm leaning towards the latter.
Maybe Melissa is gonna get back with Rafe, but they've barely even mentioned him lately.

Yeah, it's kind of justifiable from a dramatic standpoint. Totally unnecessary though. We all know what's up. They should get together by this season's end, if not sooner.
Ugh, good! He can stay unmentioned. I bet Scott has a Dad of the Year mug hidden under his bed that he hasn't been able to give Rafe, because his mom raised him not to be a filthy liar. That mug is destined to wind up on Sheriff Stilinski's desk after his extremely touching wedding.
Are there hunks? Do some of them survive?
These are my essential criteria for every movie and TV show. One yes = might watch. Two yeses = brb, an urgent matter just came up.

They have hunks but they arent LOVEABLE hunks. Besides the best man on Scream is the nerdy guy who everyone loves and doesnt want anything to happen to.

Baffling. This is one of those times where I have to question the reviewer's attentiveness and preconceptions. Is an episode worthless just because it doesn't advance the main plot to the next major phase?This is only the second time I've seen AV Club give out an F. I wish it were as entertaining an F review as Dexter's finale was.
There are a couple things I would note here. First, we're still early in the season. I don't think it's reasonable to expect the fourth episode to explain all or most of what it shows us. One of Teen Wolf's most common plot devices is a mystery that hooks at least one primary character and gradually pulls in the rest. When Parrish takes bodies to the Nematon, it's pure setup. We're not supposed to know what his deal is right away.
Second, it's simply not the case that Episode 4 wasted time on trivial things. Character development and setup are necessary to progress the overarching story. This was clearly a character oriented episode designed to set up many events to come:
- We see Parrish's dreams about the Nematon and learn they aren't just dreams.
- We find out how Lydia knew martial arts in the premiere episode's flash forward.
- We discover Theo's direct involvement with the Dread Doctors, and see him send Donovan after Stiles. (Still counts as helping, let's be clear.)
- The pack learns that the chimeras aren't supernatural in origin.
- Scott meets the Dread Doctors and witnesses them murder someone in person.
- Kira loses control in her kitsune form.
- We're introduced to a new character who's supposedly going to be Mason's love interest.
- We find out about Brett's bisexuality. (Yes, this is worth mentioning. Like Price pointed out in his photo recap, it's unusual and refreshing for an alpha male jock character to be anything other than straight as an arrow. Season after season, Teen Wolf erodes stereotypes without lingering on overt social justice themes.)
Have I left something out? Probably, but you get the point. While this was a slower episode on the narrative side, it invested an awful lot into the heart of the show, the characters, and positioned a lot of pieces for later moves.
The most important factor for me is that Episode 4 was entertaining. I'm a fan of the show. I like seeing the characters interact. I enjoy the ridiculously good looking dudes. I don't know if that reviewer appreciates Teen Wolf for the same reasons I do, but Episode 4 was full of the things that keep me watching.
Also, how can anyone criticize an episode with a club full of hunks in various states of undress? Have we no standards?

I too am pissed that the we haven't found out everything about Theo and the Dread Doctors in the fourth episode of a 10 episode season. Character Development? Who the fuck wants that am i right?

I'm not sure if I can ever entirely trust someone who's against Theo. But I'll try.
You can't blame Theo for wanting to be helpful. It's in his nature. He helped out Scott's pack as much as he could, then he went and found some other people to help. I trust him.
Personally I'm outraged that Scott and the gang didn't pull a Scooby Doo and unmask the Dread Doctors right there in the club. Perfect opportunity! Ugh, this show wastes so much time.

Yeah, I don't get her review either. It's the fourth episode and there were a lot of little things explained. Even the scorpion guy was probably the person who was in that other hole. Not every episode has to move the plot forward by huge amounts.
I've seen some of her reviews for other shows and I've never really agreed with her.

I care about exactly one critic's opinion regarding Teen Wolf, and that's Price Peterson's.
Don't worry, there's still plenty of time for Theo to stop dressing like he's vacationing on the planet Hoth. Sooner or later he'll step into a sauna or locker room and realize the error of his ways.
