The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion |OT|

Your first character in any Elder Scrolls game probably isn't going to be very good, and the games up until Skyrim are pretty unforgiving. So don't feel like you have to commit to a character, there's nothing wrong with making new ones. Not sure if there's a way to skip the emperor escort section though. If you can change your race before exiting the sewer in addition to all your other traits you could leave a save there and not overwrite it, but I don't remember.

You should probably just use one-handed weapons and a shield or two-handed weapons (pick male Redguard if you're going to play with melee weapons), and I don't know much about birth signs or Oblivion character building in general, but the Warrior has decent bonuses with no downside. Or you could try someone fast and starting with Destruction magic, probably a male Altmer or Breton. Should be easily able to back up and throw fireballs all day until you figure out what you're doing. Don't pick Atronarch sign or else your magicka won't regenerate, nor Apprentice, because then magic users will wreck you.

Oblivion is a bitch when it comes to telling you what's going on, and then suddenly the enemies are way tougher than you because you didn't level up perfectly efficiently. You can actually try not leveling up (don't sleep) for quite a while, because that way your skills (but not your base attributes like Intelligence, Strength, etc) will increase, but enemies won't become stronger. You can still just use the Wait command when no enemies are around to instantly restore all your health, magic, and stamina, and it won't force you to level up.

And you shouldn't immediately start with the storyline. Kvatch and the first Oblivion gate can be a bit too much.

I didn't really mean it sucks, I was just frustrated.

I'm playing a Bard, but I don't really know what effect that has on anything.
I really should have read the manual before playing.

I actually didn't want to do this quest because it seems like it's part of the main story, but I couldn't find anything else to do.

I have been screwed over so many times already.
When I went to go talk to the monk about the Emperor's secret son, he told me that I could use anything in his chest for the journey. Inside was a bunch of weapons and armor better than my stuff. I was at maximum weight so I dropped all my stuff and took all of his.
Then I rode a horse for 4 hours to the Oblivion gate, and when I got there, I dismount to take on those little demon things, and find out that I can't equip any of the weapons!!!

All it says is "You cannot equip this weapon."
I'm guessing I'm not skilled enough or something.

So I'm running around punching these things in the head.
I went inside the gate and joined up with a knight but he got killed by a rock slide.

Then I went inside some demonic castle, but I didn't think it was going to be this hard, so I saved a few times. Now I'm stuck in the gate and every time I try to make it to the exit I get killed.
fuck.

Do you have a save point before the gate? If not, you should probably start again. You'll have trouble in the gates until you level up a bit. Just go to Cyrodiil at first, do some quests, sell what loot you can and buy a house at the waterfront. Then from there look for the other surrounding towns and do quests. Join up with the mages guild, fighters guild, join the arena etc. There's also a ton of dungeons you can do aswell. You can take the Oblivion gates / main quest (and pretty much anything else) at your own pace.

As I said, join the arena and then you can improve your skills, get money. There's a little glitch I used to get through the arena, I just jumped up on a pillar and used a bow to take out anyone fighting me.

I assume you're new to Elder Scrolls? It takes some getting used to but it's worth it in the end. I really like Oblivion but you'll get used to it the more player and the more you get used to the systems in place.

Any advice just ask in here, there are plenty of fans.

Protips: If you have trouble finding quests, just speak to random NPCs and ask them about rumours. There should also be some additional things you can ask about in regards to quests and characters. I also know for a fact there's a little quest right next to the bridge leading to Cyrodiil's main entrance.

Also, if you're determined to continue from the spot you're currently at, since you're in the oblivion "castle" already, you can just sprint with a heal spell in your hand, constantly healing yourself and just run and grab the sigil stone. That's you're ultimate goal, and if you're nimble enough, you can survive just long enough to close the gate (happens automatically once you grab the stone).

I managed to get out.

I still didn't know what to do so I went to the University because I'm interested in magic.
I got kicked out, whether because I'm a scrub or because it was 3 in the morning, I know not.

I was able to win the first battle in the arena but couldn't win the 2nd.
Then I did a quest for the Arena champion, which involved retrieving a diary and fighting a crazed shirtless man. While in the dungeon there I contracted two diseases, I'm still not sure what they are doing to me or if I even still have them.
One of them was Bone something Fever which I got from a rat. It instantly reduced my weight capacity and I had to leave some stuff behind so that I could move again.
The second one I got while fighting a vampire novice or something of the sort. It had a crazy name but there were no discernible effects so I'm not sure what has happened.

I often hear the recent Fallouts described as "Elder Scrolls with guns", and so I was expecting this game to be a lot more like Fallout.
This game seems to be more challenging than Fallout on all fronts, from combat, character building, and even gathering information.
My character is AWFUL. At EVERYTHING.

The only annoying thing is the confusing paradox of the world seeming so vast yet I can't find anything to do.
When I choose to speak to people about "rumors" they often just say a line or two about a character or historical event of which I'm entirely ignorant.

Also, I have no idea what "Persuade" does.
It takes me to this little minigame where I can raise a number until it says that I can raise it no higher, but I'm not sure what the application of this is.

I'm confused; are you talking about the Imperial City? I thought Cyrodiil was the name of the entire landmass.

You need to get to a chapel and use the shrine to heal your diseases. If you take too long, that disease you got from the vampire will turn into vampirism, which is awful.

If you don't know how to use the Persuade option (I don't either), you probably shouldn't be a Bard. Like I said, try basic melee and destruction magic characters to start.

I'm just about to start Oblivion on PC and I'm wondering if there is any worthwhile mods for the game? It's the Steam version, what I'd love to have is a nice mod that enhances the graphics and if there is anything that's good for the gameplay I'm fine with that too.

Pretty much my first Elder Scrolls game (minus some Morrowind a billion years ago), so nothing too fancy pls ^^

*Applies Resurrection spell*

It's my first time playing an Elder Scrolls game.

I tried to give vanilla a go at first but felt completely underwhelmed 2 hours into the game due to the slow movement speed (both of the character and the horse) and many other factors. I wasn't really liking its leveling up dynamics too much, I stumbled upon several absurd glitches and I hadn't even begun traversing the world.

I remember reading about TES's thriving modding community, so I decided to look for some mods.

Holy shit.

I've installed around 30 mods, am almost 50 hours into the game and I've only explored 25% of the map so far. I've only completed 5 or 6 Ayleid ruins, 5 forts and 6 caves. That's it. As for sidequests I suppose I've completed around 25.

I'm speechless. Once you tweak the game to your own liking it becomes a tremendous beast and a huge time vortex that sucks your life entirely. It's becoming one of my favorite adventuring games of all time.

I completely forgot about the main quest. . . I just want to keep exploring ruins, completing addicting side quests, look for alchemy ingredients, kill bandits so I can loot them and sell the armor. . . The amount of stuff to do is insane.

Wow.

Welcome to Elder Scrolls. :)

Oblivion was my first ES game, too. Played vanilla on the 360 and I was just as enthralled by it as you seem to be.

What sort of mods are you using?

Man, the graphics vanilla are still really awesome. The artwork holds it up.
