This year might be good but 360 was something else [new Crowbcat video]

The PS3/X360/Wii era was much better than now.
If you exclude the Wii, then yes. X360 and PS3 where amazing.
The Wii was the worst console ever made. It became super popular amongst people who do not like games, made money with cheap and bad games, and pulled everyone into making shovelware, kinect, move and a few years of bad games afterwards.
This also means that publishers wanted casual easy money making games and it was harder for everyone to make good games.

Lolwut 360 was on life support well before 2011, 2009 was a straight up embarrassment having ODLC against Uncharted 2 (a literal turning point for PlayStation that gen) and even before that it was meh. After ODLC I switched to PlayStation and never looked back

That doesn't sound right. I took a look at the old NPD sales threads, and I can safely say that you're talking out of your ass. The Xbox 360 was the best-selling console every month in 2011. In some months, it outsold the PS3 almost 2:1. The Wii had lost most of his momentum by this point and the PS3 was starting to falter, but the Xbox 360 was still going strong even though it had been on the market for a year longer than the PS3. In the eyes of most consumers, the 360 most certainly wasn't on life support.

I mean i agree but what the fuck is that list ? 360 had more variety than that.

What's supposed to be impressive isn't all that much when he's almost entirely focusing on american shooters.

Sony, Microsoft and Nintendo should fund support services for veterans of past console wars. The flashbacks are intense and debilitating.

Trying to forget it, I went through seven of them sumbitches.

I didn't care much for the first Xbox, though I did buy one near launch. The 360 though? Amazing time for gaming in general and a great system, also lots of awesome XBLA games like Geometry Wars.. awesome. Just played and beat Assassin's Creed for the first time on 360 this past week and I loved it, reminded me how much I really enjoyed the 360. Great controller, also. Huge step up from that monster they provided with launch Xboxes.

Man, 2007 and 2009 (coupled with what came out on PS3) were just incredible years. Easily my favorite gen because of all the new good IP that consistently came out. Games may be of a higher quality now but the fact that a lot of the major releases are sequels from that gen is just depressing to think about.

Also, can’t believe DMC4 didn’t make the list.

I clearly remember many people in gaming forums at the time just kept complaining about how games were being dumbed down, campaigns getting shorter, that everything was dumb dudebro shooter and publishers only cared about multiplayer, that games from past gens were much better, a feeling made worse by the decay of once popular series like Need for Speed, Final Fantasy, DMC, etc.

I really liked that gen but damn, i guess people never change.
well it's gotten worse. objectively.

we just simply aren't getting

orange box
God of War 2
mario galaxy
halo 3
bioshock
mass effect
assassins creed
crysis
uncharted
modern warfare

in one year, and that was 2 years into the gen. we aren't getting close to that. thus it's worse.

so I hope your post wasn't an attempt at making some sort of equivalence lol

PS3/360/Wii:
8 - 16 years of age, best years of one's childhood

PS2/Xbox/Gamecube
1 - 7, can barely remember much

PS4/Xbox One/Wii U
17 - 22, age of disillusions and life starting you beat you down.

PS5/XBSS|X/Switch
+23, age of bitterness and adulthood responsibilities.

Gaming didn't deteriorated, you just got older.
the devs that still are active and capable of releasing games that move the needle, do not release at the same clip they used to. this isn't some abstract concept, this is something you can verify. that's worse, not the same.

Rockstar is less active, valve is less active, even naughty Dog is less active, epic is less active, bioware sucks, irrational used to make cool stuff, and existed. games like WiLD or beyond good and evil don't come out. silent hills, prey 2 etc get cancelled and less interesting titles take their place etc.

some gamers love gaming so much (or need gaming so much)that they don't want to believe the obvious.

This gen was just so good, it hit the sweet spot between visual fidelity and development cost/time so we still had a constant flux of releases and developers trying wild things.

The graphic whores won, but at what cost?

I'm glad that Rockstar, Valve (who btw made up for their lack of software by their amazing hardware), Naughty Dog, epic, and bioware are not the only people who make video games!

Are you seriously trying to brag about the fact you don't love gaming as much as the people who actually are invested in the hobby? on a gaming forum?

what's your point? we aren't getting years like previously. it's not the same. and those were examples of AAA devs that were pretty important to pushing the boundaries of what we could do in the gaming space. the other devs don't really have the same resources.

much of that hasn't changed really. he'll, even Konami isn't the same. ubisoft used to be good etc.

not enough to lower my standards. no.

even people's standard of what was a "genre defining bar raising title" has lowered. Elden Ring for example, released in 2007 would barely scrape goty, IMO. genre defining titles were usually leaps in tech AND game quality. not just game quality only.

Well I agree that the 360 was an awesome console with a lot of games, but I wouldn't say "now" is worst or better, it is just different.

Of course it all depends of each of us tastes. But in 2023 we got/are getting :

- Dead Island 2
- Diablo IV
- Street Fighter VI
- Jedi Survivor
- Zelda TOTK
- Final Fantasy XVI
- Resident Evil 4 Remake
- Starfield
- Spider-Man 2
- Wo Long
- Forspoken
- Forza
- Dead Space
- Hogwarts Legacy
- Pikmin 4
- Wild Hearts
- Super Mario RPG
- Octopath Travelers II
- Lies of P
- STALKER 2
- Armored Core VI
- Baldur's Gate III
- HiFi Rush
- Alan Wake II

And I could go on and on, also some Indies gems like Sea of Stars, Oxenfree II, Axiom Verge 2...

So yeah the 360/PS3 era was great (the PS1/Saturn era was too, the PS2/Xbox/Dreamcast era too etc) but we're still having a lot of awesome games. Nostalgy of course is playing with our emotions (and I'm a very nostalgic man, I replay Blue Dragon and FFX recently to 100% them again), but let's be real, gaming is still great.

I've never been bothered by frame rates. To this day, of all the games I own, I can't tell what the framerate of a game is, with the exception of Forza Horizon 4/5, and only when I stop the car and rotate the camera around really fast. Which is obviously not relevant to playing the game at all. Obviously I can notice extended and dramatic framerate dips, but if the framerate is steady, I don't know what it is.

Maybe my brain is just better at filling in the gaps, but I find it unfortunate that some people aren't able to enjoy anything less that a locked 60fps or higher. That would make me enjoy games a lot less than I currently do. Most of the games I've played this year have been 360 (Series X backward compatibility), PS3 (PS3 slim), and Switch games. No idea which ones are 30 and which, if any, are 60. And I'm grateful for that, because I'm still able to have fun with games from older generations.

This video is literally a snapshot of my life back then.
Finished and at least played most of the titles.
It almost makes me miss the idea of buying physical.

Less NPD sales and more actual single player content, not multiplayer shooters and Kinect. The reason I mention ODLC is because that's when the content drought started.

Still probably my favorite gaming era. The amount of legendary games being cranked out was just ridiculous.

And I will take brown dudebro shooters over the ugly neon woke garbage that gets shat out now any day of the week.

Complete miss. I was 14-22 for PS4 Gen. And those had by far some of the happiest years of my life. Same goes for 2020-present minus the whole Covid thing for a bit there. Even through that my mental health flourished in a lot of new ways

If anything I was more bitter and depressed when I was a smug young little punk ass kid

Good try though I’ll give you that. It was almost astute
Let me put it in a more direct way:

Kids are much easier to satisfy and impress. I've seen enough in forums like this, people chasing the same high they felt as a kid but rarely ever getting it, thinking the industry got worse, when they themselves simply got wiser, developed other interests, can't invest time and energy into pasttimes as much as before. Not to mention have their fair share of experience with games, plenty of been there done that.

As a kid/teen, i could spend hours playing games like Test Drive Off Road 3, Flight Simulator X, all whilst think they were the best things ever. Nowadays i would only play racing games like those until i beat then after a few hours, and have basically to energy for a Flight Sim, even though i don't dislike them.

If you’re done projecting your feelings on others and explaining to other people their emotions, I’d like to say I revisit my childhood favorites as an adult and like them just as much if not more than I did then

We call that nostalgia. And i'm not reading anything, this is just how people generally feel about games. Its 100% normal.

And i can't be projecting if i'm perfectly satisfied with modern games, i just know what to look for.

Peak 360 was peak gaming for me, more games than I could buy, and it felt like everything I laid my hands on was somehow terrific. Felt like reliving the PS2's hay day.

2023 isn't doing too bad for itself, but it needs a GOAT-contender to really stake its claim.

You're just being contradictory now.

Doesn't coming back to some of your "favorites" and finding them dogshit kinda proves my point?

I knew you’d try to jump at the contradiction rebuttal

It’s not a difficult concept dude. For example. Lets say I have 10 games I loved as a kid 7/10 I’ll love just as much. 3 not so much. There is literally zero contradiction

Again, flailing

If you cant find something enjoy this year then I'm sorry go find different hobby.

Yet that just proves what i said is correct, you like less games now than you would as a kid, even though they're the exact same games. Not the industry getting worse, just your tastes changing.

I’ll over look you trying to completely pivot arguments to say that that’s still erroneous because the portion of games from back then I like are leaps and bounds more than games from now sooooo both your premises fail

It was almost universally accepted at the time that 07 (and maybe 08) was one of the best game years ever, only being rivaled by 98, 01, 04. Since that time I’ve never seen a consensus on any year since being as strong. Maybe 2011 but that’s about it. That’s not to say that we haven’t had any good games at all lately, but I’m not exaggerating when I say that you could barely find any dissenting opinion that it wasn’t an all time great year. The only debate was where it ranked among the best years prior.

And as a side note, I’ll take brown/gray over all the pink/purple vomit that’s everywhere now.

We call that nostalgia. Also the patience of a kid to get invested into something, a thing our adult forms lack.

What modern games did you even try playing to be so sure?

Except your "debunk" completely contradicted your original point. To which you respond it was a matter of quantity.

To which i ask again, what modern games have you even tried?
