WAT
This game is a massive leap from current gen and is coming within the first year of the console.

<bows down gracefully>
Yea, out of my own idiocy I posted them not thinking. I removed them immediately, my apologies!
There is a limit to how good they can make a game look.
It does look like a basically 'uncompressed' The Last of Us, although with clearly vastly improved lighting and IQ, and finely detailed cloth physics, etc.
I think people are asking for disappointment if they're going to keep expecting some huge leap. The gap between TLoU and The Division is about as big as The Division and real life.
No worries. You're lucky though, I've seen three accounts ended because of those scans.
Yea, people should know by now if a site that is not GI puts up these images with a huge "Game Informer" watermark on them, they're scans.I feel bad for people that keep getting tricked by others taking the pics from the digital edition and posting them as if they were officially released. It seems like a lot of people fall for that.
Agree on most points but it does have dynamic light with the flashlights.
Looking at the pics I see:
High quality ambient occlusion
high quality depth of field which is used very subtly
high quality real time lighting which seems to be reflect off shiny surfaces
the environments and the textures look very high res
Cloth physics
chromatic aberration < looks nice here, but it was crap in crysis 3...need to see the game in motion
The last of us didn't have any of that

well said. That is beside new things for new console gen like physic based lighting and materials and whole world/levels created with soft body physic in mind which is totally new thing for retail games.
People see 720p compressed videos or 1080p compressed videos and they say "doesn't look amazing"
When they will play those games themselves in native 1080p instead of compressed 720p/1080p they will see the difference.
It is just like start of last gen where people said that 720p doesn't look that much different to normal SD.
Difference will be noticeable from DAY1 and in 1-2 years people will say PS3/Xbox360 games look like shit.
I can't really notice the chromatic aberration here, which is a good thing. When used subtly it can do a good job of recreating the look of an old camera lens but most games do it wrong and it looks like you're looking at a red/cyan 3D image or through a screen covered in oil.
To be clear, I'm not saying this isn't going to be an impressive technological leap, but it is not visual leap previous generations have been, and yes, to Perkel's point, I have played Killzone, it's not some huge leap, it's just cleaner with more particle effects than is typical.Keep in mind that this game is also doing complex physics calculations for cloth and lots of destruction in the environment. Next gen is going to be all about those things combined with a large fidelity increase. When you put the two together games are going to feel vastly more alive and screenshots won't be able to get that across.
I'm really excited about what I see from this game so far. Love the setting and the design.
I agree that I'd like to see some sort of co-op/multiplayer out of this as well. I LOVE single player experiences, but it's incredibly hard for me to justify a day one purchase when I know it's going to be a 15 hour play-through and then I'm done. Unless they do something to really up the replayability, I'd still buy it, but I'd probably be willing to wait for it to drop below $40.
I would still maintain that it is believable. The technology for steel railway bridges were available in Europe during the time. So when RAD chose to build an alternate world, it seems plausible that England could have advanced further in railroad engineering. Here is an example of a bridge in Germany designed around the same period. So you can't say it looks American.

My point was, in reference to 'it looks like TLoU', asset wise, this coming generation isn't going to provide that traditional leap in that regard. We'll get environments with less compression in textures and higher poly modeling, but outside of IQ, in stills, we're not going to see some huge improvement, as we have every previous generation. Nicer lighting and cloth physics are neat, and that's not downplaying their impact. The picture of the female Order member kneeling with her cloak surrounding her on the floor, as it would naturally have been, is really cool, but it's nothing like the immediate impact of going from PS2 to PS3, or PS1 to PS2, or SNES to PS1, etc. And to be clear, I'm not complaining about that, in fact, I'm excited about it. To have additional performance be aimed at a richer simulation, over just displaying richer assets, is actually far more rewarding in terms of the gameplay results, or it should be at least.
You can list all the technical buzzwords you want, the fact you even feel the need proves my point far better than I ever could. This is still bullshit....

I haven't been 'wowed' since the Crysis level, The Core, and this certainly didn't wow me.
I wouldn't say most wanted out of all, but yea this has easily jumped into my most anticipated list at the moment. This and inFamous are my most wanted games right now. 2014 is already a great year for the PS4.
Gotcha. I actually agree with this quite a bit, even though I think that the visual impact is a bit more than you do.To be clear, I'm not saying this isn't going to be an impressive technological leap, but it is not visual leap previous generations have been, and yes, to Perkel's point, I have played Killzone, it's not some huge leap, it's just cleaner with more particle effects than is typical.

Indeed, and not forgetting this UK Victorian steel rail bridge
I wouldn't say most wanted out of all, but yea this has easily jumped into my most anticipated list at the moment.

Seriously. This, Destiny, Second Son, Titanfall, and possibly ND and/or SSM? The first year of next gen is going to be heavenly. It's a far cry from the usual post launch droughts.yea lots of great games coming in 2014
Right, so what exactly did you think this meant?Point of above is that. Last gen was all about living in screenshot bubble where games supposed to look like that in game most of the time didn't look like that.
We all saw TLOU supersampled screenshots and how good they look but TLOU being one of the best looking games on PS3 in gameplay was just weak graphically. Textures were low res, lighting were off a lot of time (especially at the biggining in city). Not weak by PS3 standards but weak compared to new coming games for new gen.

No Witcher 3?Seriously. This, Destiny, Second Son, Titanfall, and possibly ND and/or SSM? The first year of next gen is going to be heavenly. It's a far cry from the usual post launch droughts.
No Witcher 3?

I'm messing with yaOh shit I forgot about that one. Yeah, throw that in there. I haven't played any of the Witcher games before so it slipped my mind.
Well, each his own of coursewitcher 2 was ok and witcher 1 sucked. not too excited about witcher 3
I'm messing with ya )
Yeah, just insane. I was just listing major releases that immediately sprang to mind but looking at your list makes me realize that I'm getting almost all of those.First twelve months of PS4 alone are mindblowing. Killzone, Destiny, Dying Light, InFamous, The Evil Within, The Order, Thief, Child of Light, N++, Rime, Everybody's Gone to the Rapture, The Witness, Transistor, MGS: Ground Zeroes, and finger's crossed for The Division. And Sony without doubt has more to announce.
Right, so what exactly did you think this meant?
Well considering 'he' is me, I'm pretty sure that's not what he means, no.He means by looking at offscreen shots from compressed 720p footage from game which is still WIP and doesn't have even release Q.
But what i can say. People at start of this gen said there is no visible difference between SD and HD and next gen games look like a little better looking PS2 games.
There are still people who say 720p without AA and AF vs 1080 is not that much of a difference.
And there are probably people who will say red car for them looks like a blue car.
Hell, you even left out a few too (regardless of how you feel about them):First twelve months of PS4 alone are mindblowing. I don't who these 'people' you're referring to are, nor do I even really know what you're talking about anymore to be quite honest.
No, not at all, it looks much better. Then what you mean exactly. Wasn't your point from that quote that The Order doesn't look better than TLOU ?
No, not at all, it looks much better.
My point was purely in terms of the assets, it's not a traditional generational leap. The assets look like what an uncompressed (basically PC) version of TLoU would look like. That would still have it lacking in terms of lighting, and the physics simulation, and particle effects, etc.
And my point was actually that those things are a more interesting use of performance, rather than simply 'richer' art asswets. Because they're dynamic, they can be elements which impact gameplay, etc.
Hell, you even left out a few too (regardless of how you feel about them):
Battlefield 4, Dragon Age Inquisition, Watch Dogs, Mad Max (Just Cause devs), Wolfenstein: The New Order, Deep Down, and some others I can't remember.
I'm set with my PS4, goddamn.
Deep Down, yeah, forgot about free games, ResoGun and Planetside 2 too.

For youThat culls the lineup down to a much less impressive number.
Well you can take Thief out because that's going to be garbage. Division and Destiny probably will too since those are these new "persistent world" BS games where it's going to feel like playing a MMO, with MMO-like garbage content and everything. MGS looks terrible as well and seems like it bit the streamlined bug that hit everyone else in these recent years.

For you
It is still good lineup considering what we got at start of this gen. When i bought PS3 at premiere i bought Motorstorm, Resistance and ... Full Auto Cars 2 or something like that.
Motorstorm was rad, resistance was mediacore and FAC2 was shit. From that point it was waiting....
X360 had also "not good" lineup.
Funny. Wouldn't The Division and Destiny be considered open world games? Isn't that where you want games to be headed?Well you can take Thief out because that's going to be garbage.
