President Donald Trump on Monday officially hit the delete button on federal privacy protections imposed last year on the likes of AT&T, Charter, Comcast* and Verizon.

Trump quietly signed into law a bill that blocks the implementation of rules that would have required those internet providers to ask permission before selling sensitive customer data, like web-browsing histories, to advertisers and other third parties, the White House confirmed.

Lock if old

Bonus

Oh look, some has set up a GoFundMe page to purchase the Internet histories of the politicians who voted for this:

Edit:

I wouldn't pay, just a amusing tidbit

The only thing that will make me feel better is a reddit thread full of cognitive dissonance.

Someone link me.

Anybody willing to venture into r/Doland and take a look at how his followers there are reacting? I remember seeing a few days ago how pissed off they were at Trump "betraying" (as if he gave a damn about tis in the first place) them on this very important issue for them.

I thought they could only sell non-specific data, such as website statistics, not specific data about specific users, so that GoFundMe will just net someone some easy money, no?

No mention of it when I peaked in.

They're all just talking about Susan Rice and locking up Obama.

Correct. The GoFundMe is nonsense
and I wish I had thought of this!

Don't the companies just sell the aggregates of the data within a location? So the whole 'buy the data from politicians' is nonsense because they wouldn't sell a persons single data. But of course, slippery slope and all that, so I can see it going that way..

Last time I looked they were sure he was going to veto the bill or that it was one of his 3d chess moves.

the gofundme is kind of stupid of course you can't buy data from ISPs
but ISPs can monetise it.

So they'll be offering it in some form to ad networks or maybe market research firms or pretty much any way they want - remember how they used to run DNS servers that would show ads if you entered the wrong hostname ?

But my worry is that ISPs are not very good at security. Now your browser history is going to be stored in SQL databases, neatly near billing systems etc, they become a magnet for hackers because that shit is a gold mine for all kinds of reasons. Even if an ISP doesn't get hacked, an employee might leak to a private investigator or just walk away with a USB stick. Once the data is out, connected to ones identity, you can't just change a password and be free of the data.

So it isn't so much that ISPs can now SELL the data that is the big step, it is now the data will be COLLECTED and stored in databases, and the data crosses so many boundaries. Health, Financial, Hobbies, Porn of course, Shopping, bills. etc. Previous to this the data was in your browser and you could wipe it. Now it is in databases with a big fat target on it.

Just got a VPN yesterday. My wife who rarely pays attention to such things asked me if we were getting one last week. Cox can lick my nuts if they think they can sell my information.

i'm ignorant on the subject but uh, can't VPN companies just sell the info exactly the same as cox could...? or potentially 'steal' your bandwidth?
