Remember that part in Se7en where it was a huge deal to figure out what library books someone checked out? Seems so quaint now...

I paid $60 bucks for 3 years of private internet access (PIA) and have been happy with that.

So is this basically going back to how things were a year ago, or does this further subvert privacy laws than even before?

Maybe I'm just grossly ignorant on the topic but, are there actually things in your browsing history you don't want people being able to see/buy or is it more the principal of the thing? The idea of this information getting to advertisers to help them make more money with better targeted ads already seems like what happens to me on amazon or steam. What do I gain by paying for a vpn so that concast can't sell my browsing data of gaf, twitter, wikipedia, etc?

Not much, assuming you're okay with that.

It does mean they are collecting data though which you have to trust is stripped of all identifying information (which it probably is not) and who they're selling the data to wouldn't have any desire to peice together your identify (they would).

not often, but you can just you know, switch companies later. The difference is this business revolves around privacy while ISP's revolves around fucking you over.

the best way to sucker people in is to make them think you're providing them a valuable service, while they've got their hand in your back pocket the whole time. seems quite easy for VPNs to make money off you in the same ways ISPs are aspiring to and honestly i don't see why a VPN company wouldn't try to. people laugh at the folks who trusted trump but he's the textbook businessman. he will make his money and his followers will feel like they're getting a deal. seems people are quick to dismiss that when they think a company is 'for the people'.

Prospective future employers could add Internet history as one of the things they screen for. I would not want my porn or any surfing habits to be scrutinized. By them or anyone.

I'm glad someone finally stood up for the ability for mega corporations to sell my browsing history to third parties. It was a big issue for me in the campaign, I was really hoping someone would step up to the plate and get those ISP's some extra cash.

Of course I don't expect any discounts on my service or any improvements whatsoever now that ISP's will be making even more money, I'll just be satisfied in knowing that my browsing history is going toward a good cause.

Maybe don't look up bad things? What do you have to fear if you aren't going in dank web or whatever? I always see these topics ohh the sky is falling because advertisers are getting my data, but like, don't you put in your address in Amazon? It's the same thing. So instead of complaining about it and looking up VPNs like it matters, how about just focus on keeping your search history pure as snow?

Sometimes, I don't think it's the big bad companies who are at fault, but maybe it's us. Maybe we need this for better cyber security.

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.

I agree for the positive outlook. We should check ourselves.

I get what youre saying but its not even that. They will use this information how ever they see fit. Its not just to "sell to advertisers so they can make better ads".

I'm probably going to regret taking this seriously, but if you don't realize the massive gulf between me putting my shipping address into Amazon and Comcast selling the fact that I watch ass-worship porn to advertisers who will bombard me with ads for buttplugs shaped like The Monkees (collect all four!) or some shit, there's no helping you.

Fishing with dynamite tonight I see.

Impressive haul.

$30-$40/month if possible.

Okay this is a lot more than a VPN typically costs so you'll be OK.

"Threat Profile"?

Why do you want a VPN? Who is your adversary that you want protection against? If it's just your ISP, just about any VPN that's paid will work, as well as just about any server you can rent will be capable of letting you run your own VPN. AirVPN, NordVPN, PIA, TorGuard are all popular choices among VPNs, and for server hosting, DigitalOcean, Linode, OVH, Vultr, AWS, etc. are all popular choices.

Anybody willing to venture into r/Doland and take a look at how his followers there are reacting? I remember seeing a few days ago how pissed off they were at Trump "betraying" (as if he gave a damn about tis in the first place) them on this very important issue for them.

I was morbidly curious so I went to look. There's nothing on the front page about it and most of the threads are talking about how Susan Rice is going to jail for spying on Trump. They just live in another world.

The problem with this legislation isn't the selling of data, it's the lack of consumer protections. Who cares if compiled data is sold to advertisers and corporations when it goes towards improving their products or advertisements? That's good for consumers and producers.

However, where is the protections from employers getting access to my browsing history? Where are increased security mandates for database firms? Where is legislation for compliance?

Perhaps there are articles within this new law which addresses these things but why is it not at the heart of this discussion?
