I'm not gonna finish by Sunday either (14 episodes left) but I'm just gonna start the new series late. Probably will be able to watch it by Tuesday or Wednesday.

I'm flaggin here fellas. Finished S2E9 last night. Really tempted to read synopsis of the remaining episodes, watch the finale and then FWWM. That's what I see people doing on Twitter and I don't want to dedicate such a large chunk of my three day weekend to 12 hours of what I've always heard is notoriously bad tv. What ya'll think?
I heard that if you don't finish every single season 2 episode before the new season begins, BOB will pay you a visit that same night.

They did a segment on the music of Twin Peaks on NRP yesterday with interviews from Badalamenti.

There's new music. :)

That was a good piece.

On a separate note, I think I am going to wait to see what the content advisory is before watching the new season. I really strongly disliked FWWM, including not being a fan of the more R-rated content since for me a big part of what made Twin Peaks so great was it's aw shucks-ness and the harder the content the more I feel like that's lost. At least, for the movie it felt that way to me.

I hope the new season has a similar feel to the original series and that they don't fall into the typical Showtime (and HBO) pattern of gratuitous content that doesn't advance the story. A couple of kind posters filled me in upthread that the show is going to be less tame that than the originals.

I read that it has the "least amount of nudity" of any Showtime show. I'm assuming violence will be more of an issue for you.

God I love Ray Wise. I knew that already, but rewatching it solidifies it even more.

I suspect it will be lighter than FWWM (it's dark even by Lynch standards) but I can't see it being too lighthearted.

Agree with those saying that you should watch the whole series. Some crap in there for sure but plenty of good stuff, especially in the last major arc. (For me S1 > S2 >>>>> FWWM.) IMO there's really not such a significant benefit to watching the new episode as soon as it airs if you can't in time that it would outweigh missing the enjoyable parts of the remaining episodes. There is some dreck in those episodes, don't get me wrong, but some very quality content also. Just my two cents. :)

Thanks for the info.
It's kind of both. I guess violence is more disturbing to me naturally but at the same time I can stomach it much more easily generally than the softcore porn aspect of cable TV dramas since violence usually serves a story purpose and the latter just takes me out of the show and feels ludicrous. I'll wait to hear from you or someone else what the content is like. :)

Edit: I totally understand this is a minority opinion and respect if most feel very differently.

I suspect it will be lighter than FWWM (it's dark even by Lynch standards) but I can't see it being too lighthearted.

Thanks. I mean, I'm ok with some darkness, I just particularly like the balance and tone they struck in the original series.

Red Letter Media just put out one of their re:view videos, and this one's about Twin Peaks: Fire Walk With Me. I haven't watched it yet but that's pretty neat.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bd1bbjXCfyY

edit: Hehe, ok watching some and they like Windom Earle too.

And they definitely spoil the whole series if you're still watching.

Missing pieces doesn't, but the book, Secret History of Twin Peaks, does yeah.

Audrey survived but is taken to the hospital in critical condition, and it appears Pete saved her life by shielding her. None of the others survived the explosion.

The Secret History of Twin Peaks does:

Audrey is protected by Pete, who dies (along with Andrew Packard).

According people who read the new book,
she survived, but because was protected by Pete and the banker :(

Edit: ^^ Well that.

Thanks for the info!

Unsure if posted yet, Vulture article:

Why Twin Peaks Is Not the Series We’ve Convinced Ourselves It Was

You haven’t seen the new Twin Peaks yet. Neither have I.

Nevertheless, I’m worried.

Not about the show. About its reception.

I fear that a good number of viewers are going to watch the new Twin Peaks eagerly anticipating the charming, consumable, GIF-able, and meme-able elements: the comedy, the flirtations, the quizzical reaction shots, and dry banter; the ritual consumption of coffee, donuts, and pie; Agent Dale Cooper with his big grin and Audrey with her saddle shoes and skirts; the dancing dwarf, Angelo Badalamenti’s funky lounge music cues, and so on.

That’s Twin Peaks, of course. But it’s not all that Twin Peaks was. And it’s not all that the new Twin Peaks will likely be.

Here are seven things you need to keep in mind as you watch the show.

1. Twin Peaks was a laboratory for artists who never expected to be making a hit show and had no idea how to sustain one. It wasn’t perfect, and even now, after nearly three decades of TV shows that ripped off Twin Peaks, it won’t be perfect, either.
In a recent New York Magazine interview, series co-creator David Lynch avoided talking about either the old or new series in detail. But he did admit it started to slide in season two, when Lynch was concentrating on finishing his 1990 movie Wild at Heart, and the show’s writers realized they didn’t know how to resolve the Laura Palmer murder mystery, much less where to go after they did.

The show’s severe case of artist’s block is how we ended up with a wheel-spinning episode where Leland Palmer drove around with a murder victim in the trunk of his car while audiences clamored for closure to the Laura mystery. It’s also the reason why there was so much stuff in the second half of season two that was weird in a cutesy or gratuitously wacky way, almost like something out of a bad David Lynch parody (think of Josie Packard as a doorknob, or Catherine Martell reappearing on the show as an Asian man with a mustache).

And it’s why the series, which had previously demonstrated an uncanny ability to modulate tone, started whipsawing and stumbling and falling into pits it dug for itself, at times delivering subplots that were so silly or listless that you weren’t sure if they were bad examples of a particular trope or an equally terrible spoof (like James Hurley getting drawn into what felt like a high-school production of Double Indemnity).

It seems less likely that Lynch and his producing partner Mark Frost will have that problem in this outing, because they’ve had 27 years to think about what they might do if they had the chance, and there are people working on the series who came up in the world of post–Twin Peaks TV, not to mention post-Sopranos, post-Buffy, post-Lost, and post-everything-else TV.

But it’s still a possibility, because it’s innate to the essence of the exercise.

It's a really good article.

Edit: be sure to read it to the end for something hilarious....

I went to subscribe to Showtime today and it said 1 month free trial so I went ahead with it and they charged me. So I guess there isn't a month free trial.

2 days! When is the OT coming?

Sumio Mondo's doing it, but I've been contributing with some graphics so we've discussed it. I'm done with my part unless I get some last minute requests though. Anyway last I heard the plan's to get it up today, but they mentioned it could be tomorrow at the latest.

Most Lynch's movies feature a lot of sex and a lot of violence. It's part of his style and the themes he gravitates towards. If that's where he wants to go I'll go along with it.

Oh no, for real? I was planning on the trial also. Did you contact them?

Understood. As a Twin Peaks fan rather than a Lynch movie fan I'd prefer it not to be like that but I understand where you're coming from and it may well shake out more to your preference.

Wtf I watched The Missing Pieces and I had no idea
there would be a continuation of the show's ending. It's crazy, for years the "how's Annie" scene was the end of it and since 2014 there's something new and I didn't even know! I guess it's not that important in the context of the show, but outside of it it seems like a big deal. The nurse scene too. I wonder if they released all of this already knowing they would do the new season?

Anyway, some good stuff in here, that was a nice watch.

Best scene: Laura with the Haywards and their muffins.
Worst scene: Dale talking to Diane.

And thus my rewatch has ended, I'm now fully ready for Sunday!
The Missing Pieces and especially the spoilered scenes were mindblowing when the blu-ray set was first released, before the new show was announced. It has since lost some of its novelty, but for a while it felt like a genuine miracle. It was the first new Twin Peaks footage in (then) nearly 25 years and everyone thought it would be the last.

Agreed on best/worst. I wish at least the part where they come up with the nickname could have made it into the movie because of how it changes the tone of Laura choosing it in the pink room. It turns what seemed like a random dumb quip into kind of a hurtful joke.

I'll be very happy with the series leaning more into the FWWM vibe, but still retaining some of the humor. FWWM is incredible, but I don't know if I can take the whole series being that bleak throughout.

I agree with the sentiment that this show is possibly gonna end up pissing people off.

I'm not gonna set my expectations for the show being more like the show or FWWM, it's just gonna be David Lynch.

Sharon Van Etten posted this. Now I don't know if she's involved, but damn if I'm not hyped to think she is.

Yeah I think it needs some of the humor, like from the Theresa Banks part, and some human moments (mostly seen in deleted scenes like Ed and Norma, the Palmer family speaking in Norwegian, Doc Hayward reading the note to Laura, etc.)

I doubt it will be 100 percent bleak. Lynch probably felt he needed to be like that to tell Laura Palmer's story. Not having any room for humor or oddball moments seems unlikely.

I'm fully expected it to be divisive in some way, yeah. I also expect I'll love it myself so hey, that's okay. I'm just stoked we're getting hours and hours of David Lynch after all these years.

Yeah, I mentioned it earlier but apparently he only watched the pilot and FWWM before writing the new script. It was the same for FWWM's script (he only watched the pilot). But Frost did rewatch the whole series.

Yeah, it's not an issue or anything. I mean look at Coop's Missing Pieces scene set after episode 29. That's totally in line continuity-wise, but Engels wrote the script with Lynch and I assume he kept things tidy.

So hyped for Season 3! How many of you are holding viewing parties? I'm holding one for a small group of friends who are big TP fans. We literally have no idea what to expect. Which is actually quite cool to experience in 2017.

I rewatched FWWM last night. I think it plays a lot better on second and third viewings, and now knowing that it's not the last word in the Twin Peaks universe helps ease some of the expectations. So much great imagery, music and just overall creepiness. Would love a similar vibe in S3, but with a bit more humor. I hope Lynch gives me lots of close ups of beautiful women with bright red lipstick lol

So considering it seems Lynch has revisited very little of the old material in creating the new season is he going to be disregarding much of the previous lore or story elements?

I'm unsure what to expect going into the new season now.
It's been a long time since I've seen it, but I did like basically all of it.

Sadly, no. I'm going to be out of town at an event on Sunday night, so no viewing party for me. I also just moved to a new town and barely know anyone, and the few people I know definitely don't watch it. :/

Potentially, who knows what the hell is gonna happen Sunday. I'm glad so little is known about the tone or direction its going to go in (beyond FWWM-related and Coop's "odyssey" ofc), its made my hype go through the roof all the more. This is a very special thing to have happen in 21st century post social media advertising where so many details either usually leak or are crammed down our throats in trailers, savor it people.

edit: Pretty bitchin theater they're having the premiere at tonight in LA (Ace Hotel/United Artists restoration):

Do we know for sure if Missing Pieces is still canon? And is there a description of what the Missing Pieces scenes show?

Edit: found this description: http://theweek.com/articles/444949/twin-peaks-what-newly-revealed-missing-pieces-change-about-series

I haven't been following this too closely, what's been said regarding these two points? :)

I'm this Coop right now.

The wait is rough but I'm stoked

Yeah I kinda hit a brick wall with the impatience yesterday and needed a breather from all the social media camping but am recharged and ready to go again :)

Maybe someone can find a link but in recent interviews Lynch said FWWM was essential to the new season, and early on in the initial press conference around January I believe it was, the Showtime Pres David Nevins said the big arc/focus of the new season was about Coop's odyssey back to Twin Peaks.

Gotcha, thank you! It seems like the deleted scenes in Missing Pieces (described at length in the link above, for anyone curious) could end up playing a significant role as well, then. (Unless those have been confirmed not to be canon.)

I wouldn't expect them to be canon since he's never released a cut with them included back in, but I wouldn't be surprised if aspects of the extended above the convenience store scenes had some thematic significance. Maybe the whole "We have descended from pure air" bit will be explored further.
