The chairman of the U.S. Federal Communications Commission is moving quickly to replace the Obama administration's landmark net neutrality rules and wants internet service providers to voluntarily agree to maintain an open internet, three sources briefed on the meeting said Thursday.

FCC Chairman Ajit Pai, a Republican appointed by President Donald Trump, met on Tuesday with major telecommunications trade groups to discuss his preliminary plan to reverse the rules, the sources said.

The FCC declined to comment but Pai previously said he is committed to ensuring an open internet but feels net neutrality was a mistake.

Three sources said Pai plans to unveil his proposal to overturn the rules as early as late April and it could face an initial vote in May or June.

Fast track thread for removal if old.

This fucking administration is hell bent on killing any and every consumer friendly rule in the book. Ridiculous.

It's like they're being paid for by corporate America.... Oh wait...

Those corporations. You can always expect them to do the best thing for the American people. It's the Republican way.

im so confused as to how a country progresses...what's the point of two governing bodies when all they do is eradicate what the previous one did?

i feel like im taking crazy pills. we just keep going in circles

I'm fine with this if they also end all regional ISP non-compete contracts and allow an actual free market to take its course. But of course they won't. It's just more corporate welfare.

Yeah that was my exact thought, I have no fucking idea how we've ever accomplished anything the way shits been going all year.

If trump doesn't veto this it's going to really upset his base which largely uses the internet. No one wants this.

Trump doesn't even know what net neutrality is.
However, he does know that Obama is for it, so naturally he'll sign off on anything that gets rid of it.

His base will eat it up, because they're morons.

My fortune 100 company will file a lawsuit against them as soon as they do. Private individuals are not alone in their use of encrypted VPNs.

Lol. Corporations pay extra for VPNs.

If you're a company in China you can get an unrestricted VPN connection.

This is about the average internet user.

What'll be is if you want to work from home and use a VPN. You gotta pay for the premium internet package.

This is so much worse than the years before Obama. Virtually everything this administration has rushed to do has involved removing protections from consumers/citizens in favor of corporations.

So this jackhole disagrees with the idea of net neutrality, but he still wants the telecoms to "voluntarily" operate as if net neutrality was still in place?

This is so fucked.

I can't even imagine all of the different ways in which this will fuck over so many people.

Haha what a fucking joke. Is that a real quote? We are going to implement the honor system for ISPs?

Yup quoted the article. the post below the one you quoted has another honor system quote

-_________-

Pisses me off more people aren't upset about this. Im assuming we're only going to see the outrage once all the BS is in place. Major companies need to start doing something right now

Enjoy Netflix in 240p if you don't have Comcast or a TV package with your other providers.

And to think, that's just the start.

Literally just a bold faced lie. From Hobby Lobby's autonomy to trusting an oil man on the EPA to this honor system bullshit. None of the people spouting this shit believe it. They know that they're just granting companies free reign to fuck people and hope to profit off of it from being good little lap dogs. They love companies and despise consumers. That's the long and short of it. Everyone should count any legislator in the future who talks about how companies have it hard or assigning human properties to them as a shill who doesn't believe citizens who have rights and will suck the cock of any business that will have them.

Speaking of FCC decisions, letting Spectrum buy TWC has turned out to be a real crapshoot for existing TWC customers. Prices have gone up, offerings are worse or the same, and they appear to have taken a complete hardline on renegotiating prices with existing customers.

If you don't like it, speak up. Not everyone reads NeoGAF, but ACLU, EFF, your Congress Representatives (sure, they might not listen, speaking up is still important), and other organizations will collate those voices to be heard into action.

This is another thing that will affect the Trump voter negatively. Imagine these rural area residents who are on an already piss poor satellite connection having to deal with downgraded video quality at home. Meanwhile, Verizon & Co. attempts to fleece Netflix and other high bandwidth content providers to pay up because they have a large amount of users using bandwidth on their circuits. The consumer can also be subject to extra fees to use specific services they already pay for or otherwise would be free to access, like YouTube and Hulu.

And no, the ISPs will not be agreeing to possible less profits by "voluntarily" maintaining the status quo if Net Neutrality was ended.

wants internet service providers to voluntarily agree to maintain an open internet

Its unbelievable to think that anyone could fall for this nonsense.

You can't just give ISPs the option to fuck over customers for profit if they so choose, because they always will take that road. That's the entire reason this law exists - it should be apparent that this is entirely motivated by the ISPs own interests and not the interests of consumers.
