Val Kilmer has joked that the treatment he had for throat cancer has left him with a 'pirate's laugh'.

The 60-year-old Batman Forever star was diagnosed in 2015 and is now recovering from treatment - part of which included a tracheotomy to help him breathe more easily.

Speaking to Good Morning America, the actor opened up about the impact the cancer and its treatment has had on his voice.

He started the interview by reassuring fans that he was actually feeling pretty good, despite how he sounds.

He said: "I feel a lot better than I sound, but I feel wonderful.

"I was diagnosed with throat cancer, which healed very quickly. This is a tracheotomy to help me breathe, because the glands in my throat swelled up as well."

When asked what he missed most about his 'old voice', Kilmer joked: "That I had one! And that I didn't laugh like a pirate."

He also talked about his recent reunion with Tom Cruise, whom he starred alongside in Top Gun back in the 1980s.

Kilmer will be reprising his role of Lieutenant Tom 'Iceman' Kazansky, in the upcoming sequel Top Gun: Maverick.

Talking about the reunion, he said: "It was absolutely moving. I was really surprised. And Tom was wearing his jacket, the original jacket from the first movie. It was just very moving.

"And I don't want to give away anything, but in between takes, Tom and I just laughed like we were in high school."

Cruise, who plays Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell in the flick, recently announced that the new movie's release date was being put back until later in the year.

Originally, it was set to hit cinemas on 24 June - however, Cruise tweeted earlier this month to confirm it had been pushed back until December.

Sharing the news, he wrote: "I know many of you have waited 34 years. Unfortunately, it will be a little longer. Top Gun: Maverick will fly this December. Stay safe, everyone."

December delay is fine.

Anyone still not going to the theatre by december is a massive pussy. (Or has underlying health conditions so you get a pass)

Did he shoot the scenes before the tracheotomy or is he gonna be like a Nick Nolte kinda character in the movie where you need subtitles but they feel too bad to put them on the screen?

Shouldn't you tell us?

And, wonder how he plays his role in TG:Maverick if he cannot talk properly anymore.
Will they use a voice actor dubbing him, or do they incorporate his voice in the story in the movie?

Pretty sure they will dub him...his filming role was only for a day or so so it’s most likely a walk in
