VG247 Rumor: PS4 > Xbox 720; NowGamer Rumor: Xbox 720 > PS4

more fake news.

They're taking advantage of CES ending so that they can run speculative stories on the consoles to get hits, what you hear is all rumour.

also, getting your panties twisted about flops is hilarious. What was the difference on the ps2 vs the xbox/gc again? or the the ps3 vs the xbox?

edit
ps3 2018 GFLOPS
xbox 355 GFLOPS

that difference really really shows.

Based on my experience of how the industry works in practice, the likelihood of the same "insider" having equal access to both next gen devices is pretty slim.

Until specs are publicly announced these sort of trade secrets are held jealously with NDA's and locked-door policies. i.e. separate teams with no communication allowed between the two under severe penalty of law.

I can see one "insider" having good knowledge of say XBox720, and another of PS4, but both... highly unlikely at this point.

There'd be third parties who know about both.

This unbolded bit in the OP from VG247 would also be 'new':

Orbis will have 4Gb of RAM, said our source, of which 1Gb will be reserved for for OS, security and apps, leaving some 3Gb for games.

Maybe, although the Durango OS RAM figure was not what was being thrown about here.

They've also had verifiably 'legit' leaks in the past. Doesn't automatically give them credit for anything they post, but it's something to go on.

The NowGamer report is rubbish though.

Just yesterday evening there were discussions on 2GB RAM for Durango OS. I dunno, they come close to the same stuff that was being discussed here and the timing is almost too perfect.

Lol, it took like 2 seconds to see the NowGamer article is utter bullshit.

VG247 is basically just reconfirmation, with an extra decimal point.

The 3GB reserved for OS and background functions is new from what I have read in the previous rumour threads. I think Sony are missing a trick by not including 2GB of cheap DDR3 RAM for system functions that is inaccessible to developers (as in walled off) to preserve all 4GB of the high speed RAM for games.

Digital Foundry hinted they have something coming last Saturday, maybe that's their source. vg247 is part of the Eurogamer network.

Just to make sure, this is the same info you used to decide which machine you are going to get a page back?

:p

...no? I'm talking about NowGamer article, which is load of shit that was copy pasted from some MS fanboys livejournal.

I'm going by the VG247 rumor which seems to be 100x more correct.

Nowgamer's report is based on that BS misterx blogpost stuff.

From VG247...I guess they're confirming the gpu stuff we sort of already knew, or were close to knowing.

3GB for Durango's OS is new and sort of on the high end of what was discussed.

Not new, been the number for ageeeeees. Only caveat being Eurogamer said it was 2GB a while back, and since theyre a good source I thought it was reasonable to consider.

Only new thing here is basically the first time I've ever heard a PS4 OS figure mooted. 1GB.

Everybody is looking at the flops and ignoring the RAM. As I posted on B3D, to compare it to this gen based on the rawest of numbers and ignore the system wide view, it would be like if:

PS3=750mhz RSX+300MB RAM
360=500mhz Xenos+500MB RAM

(aka, 50% more GPU on top (since Xenos and RSX are reasonably close in capability), 5:3 RAM ratio on bottom)

I dont know, I dont rush to declare a winner there, in fact I kinda lean to the bottom system.

Either way I cant wait to see game comparisons. The PS3 and 360 were literally almost exactly the same, and it'll fun to have some real system differences this time around. One port might have vastly better textures, another vastly better shader effects, but they shouldn't be almost exactly the same as this gen and that'll be fun. Let alone the first party exclusives...

I would be inclined to agree, but the rumors being hinted at by Aegies, Bkilian, and Proelite all hint towards this. Also the VG247 had the first Vita pictures before any one else.

This isn't news, we've known this for quite some time now, fuck you VG247!

Of course it's all rumors, but thinking that absolutely nothing true is leaking out from CES, which sources said had MS showing aspects of Durango behind closed doors, is just being in denial.

Not everything is a conspiracy.

I guess those TFLOPS numbers are from the documentation developers got from Microsoft and Sony - it would be funny if Microsoft/Sony have used different numbers for different developers to find out if there may be a leak, for example 1.84 TFLOPS in the docs for EA, 1.83 TFLOPS in docs for Ubisoft etc. ...

I know. And both consoles had absolute shit reliability. How many billions did Sony and MS lose in the first 2 -3 years of each launch? They are not going down this path again for many reasons. Will not happen.

Sony didn't lose money on reliability, they lost it on high BD and Cell costs as well as the brand new HDMI 1.3 standard.

I think the more important thing is, they have confirmed the "bullshit" from the internet. Aegies needs to speak on some of these things.

the nowgamer rumor sounds idk farfectched

I stopped reading at this

Sony caught wind of Microsoft's dual SOC (System On Chip) technology, and countered it by increasing the RAM to 8GB as well as improving the GPU.

However, Microsoft has since reacted to that by adding in a third SOC into the Xbox 720 - resulting in what the developer refers to as "three computers in one".

but then this part is really interesting
Discussing the Oban and CPU setup, the insider claims "It's 384bit and has 550gb/s it was designed to enhance the system for ray tracing and other memory heavy rendering engines.

"Oban is the game changer for MS. You all will see very soon with your own eyes and ears."

The insider is the posed the question on whether the three SOCs will cause trouble for Microsoft, and in fact make it harder to develop for than Sony's single SOC system.

"It would be hard to achieve if it was not for Oban design," he says, adding "I have heard Starsha kits have very bad heating problems due to the GPU and SOC not being specialised enough.

"I think that has come down to sony not having enough money to invest in R&D."

The insider then claims that the Oban/Venus blitter and SOC setup has been in development for two years by Microsoft, IBM and AMD.

"And also a lot of people are comparing Starsha and Kryptos by saying that Starsha is more powerful, well it's because you are comparing them to early SDK. Sony Starsha has been in final SDK since December."

which would contradict that roadmap in the vgleaks

PS3 and Xbox 360 had totally different GPU architectures, and god knows what nvidia did there. But the PS4 and Xbox 3 are rumored to have almost the same GPU architecture from the same company, so TFLOPS number can maybe give us a good indication of their power.

Can't believe but I might end up getting an xbox in the future. after PS1,2, and 3 I am going with MS machine if NOwgamer is correct. No way I get stuck on inferior machine again. I did go with PS3 because that extra power was used by the first party but if this is true, then MS first party will have more to work with.
Sad.

How many PC games truly utilize that much today?

The first next gen game (Crysis 3) requirements:

Minimum System Operating Requirements for PC:
• Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
• DirectX 11 graphics card with 1Gb Video RAM
• Dual core CPU
• 2GB Memory (3GB on Vista)
• Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
• Nvidia GTS 450
• Intel Core2 Duo 2.4 Ghz (E6600)
• Example 2 (AMD):
• AMD Radeon HD5770
• AMD Athlon64 X2 2.7 Ghz (5200+)

Recommended System Operating Requirements for PC:
• Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8
• DirectX 11 graphics card with 1GB Video RAM
• Quad core GPU
• 4GB Memory
• Example 1 (Nvidia/Intel):
• Nvidia GTX 560
• Intel Core i3-530
• Example 2 (AMD):
• AMD Radeon HD5870
• AMD Phenom II X2 565

Hi-Performance PC Specifications:
• Windows Vista, Windows 7 or Windows 8

Nah, that's been going around here for a long time now, since then we've had GAF members say it's been reduced.

Right, so if they were using GAF as their info source, they presumably wouldn't be saying 3GB...

That's disingenuous. Back when PS3 and 360 were compared, when their floating point ratings were compared, they compared programmable resources. While even that still wasn't quite apples-to-apples, the comparison being made by VG247 is a lot more reasonable to make (comparing shader resources on gpus from the same manufacturer within one generation of each other at most).

I can see Sony allocating 25% of the RAM for OS and other things but it would be an overkill imho. Completely unnecessary.

This is just a refurbished rumor.

We still have to see how these systems compare when they are unveiled. People are just taking the Tflop number and running it as if it has settled the comparisons between hardware we still don't quite understand.

Both machines will supposedly have have the ability to read 100Gb Blu-ray discs.

My Reaction:

without knowing the architecture it's not.

Please don't be serious.

8GB for the PS4 is total nonsense, but just 3GB for games from Vg247 seems awfully low as well. Neither seem to be on the mark, but as I said before VG seems closer to reality.

I do hope we see some solid post CES leaks for the Xbox however.
