This guide only works for, and is intended for, Windows Store games that you own. It will not work for games you do not own a valid licence for
Installer for encrypted packages (.EAppx)
If you are not too familiar with using Powershell or a command line interface, I have created a program to install a downloaded package from a graphical interface. However, this program is very basic and does not show a install progress bar or any potential error messages during install. I aim to come back to it and add expand the functionality of the program in the future.
Guide to install
Windows Store has been causing a lot of issues for users lately, with downloads being reset halfway through (that still has not been fixed after a fix was pushed via Windows Update) and no possible way to copy files to another PC like you can with Steam, etc.
This guide will walk you through the steps of finding the URL to a game's install package generated by the Windows Store and then installing the package after it has downloaded.
Check if all PCs are up to date. You should aim to be running the Anniversary Update (1607) as the Xbox Play Anywhere games require this version of Windows 10. If you do not have it, you can download the ISO to update here
Download and install Fiddler.
This program will be used to find the URL for the app's install package.
In Fiddler, open the WinConfig menu, check Store and save changes. Image for this step
Open the Windows Store and start the download of the game
In Fiddler click the Find button and search for 'appx'. Then select a highlighted link and copy the URL using Ctrl-U. Image for this step
Exit Fiddler and paste this link into a browser or download manager and download it. I recommend the use of a download manager (I personally use DownThemAll!) as these links expire if they are inactive (such as the download was paused, cancelled or errored out) and a download manager will let you change the URL to continue the download.
Steps to replace URL in DownThemAll! (may be similar to other download managers)
Once the download is completed, if you cancelled the download in the Windows Store or are on another PC you will need to start the download of the game from the Windows Store and let it download about 10 MB of data. This is to obtain the licence information required to launch the game. Close the Store after you've done this.
At this point you have a number of ways to install it. To change the drive your game installs to, open the Settings app, then go to System -> Storage and change the setting 'New apps will save to'. Image for this segment. You will also want to be running in Developer mode (you can change this in Settings -> Updates & Security -> For developers)
If the file has the extension .Appx or .AppxBundle, you can simply run it (double click it) and it will install using the package installer built-in to Windows 10. This will not work for games downloaded as .EAppx
If using the AppxInstaller program linked in this guide, click the Browse button, select the install package and click Install. Image to this step. This will not show any errors such as lack of hard drive space/a corrupt file or the progress of the install
If not using AppxInstaller, run Powershell from Start (you may need to run as Administrator). Once in Powershell, enter the following command: "add-appxpackage <file>", where file would be something like "C:\ForzaHorizon3.EAppx". To make things easier, rename the file to something short and easy to type into the Powershell window, and if you wish to not worry about finding the file directory, in a Windows Explorer window showing the folder the package is located enter 'powershell' into the address bar to open Powershell directly to that folder (so you only need to type the file's name e.g. ForzaHorizon3.EAppx). Example of this step
Once you have done this, return to the Store and cancel the download. The game will show up as installed and it can be opened via the Store page or the Start Menu
Troubleshooting
If the install fails for some reason or another, the best thing to do is to Google the error code Powershell gives. The error code can be found on the first line of red error text
add-appxpackage : Deployment failed with HRESULT: <error code>
You are most likely not the only person with that error code and there is most likely a solution to your problem.
Other general troubleshooting ideas is to run the Windows Apps troubleshooter (search Troubleshooting in Start -> View All on left side of window -> Windows Apps troubleshooter, it's 2nd last entry in list)
