Virtue's Last Reward SPOILER Thread

Thanks for that, interesting :)
I also just thought of the She Knows Everything bit on the Computer Screen. I know we're meant to think "She" is Luna at that point, but I've thought it could also mean Akane, and even (maybe especially) - Phi, given her knowledge in the secret ending.
Maybe Phi is the true mastermind.
Maybe Sigma and Phi are related.. that sounds predictable.. but I dunno... I just keep thinking back to how the Greek letter Phi looks like 0 but divided in half....
And what happens when you divide by Zero? The Universe collapses on itself, you dont want that ;)

I finished the game last night after 33 hours, so I'm trying to catch up on this thread now.

As a big Persona fan, it was a little weird hearing Alice and Dio really arguing especially when Dio started swearing. They were obviously the same voice actors as Mitsuru and Akihiko, but I didn't realize Laura Bailey and Karen Strassman where Luna and Phi till I looked it up.

I knew going in that Quark would sound like the new Chie based on numerous complaints in the P4A/P4G threads.

It was startling to hear Mitsuru and Akihiko arguing, but Rise I picked up on right away.

I didn't find out about Aigis until I heard the Slink podcast yesterday that had Strassman on and realized that Phi is her actual voice. :p

erm, just beat it but the secret ending doesn't unlock. anybode has a good youtube link?

yes, i beat all the puzzles on hard and all the archives, i triple checked everything. i also did cross checked it on gamefaqs to make sure i have everything.

Try playing through the ending again, you might unlock it then? If it still doesn't unlock, check all the rooms again. I missed just one archive and kept overlooking the count. >_>

I'll try looking for a good video in the meantime. :)

It should have you skip all the way back to the top of the flowchart then it'll open up something else at the very bottom.

Hey,
Anyone think about this?
In the flashback (quite near the start of the game) Sigma wonders why he's been kidnapped - Had I hacked into some terrorists groups server? Had I started a fight with a threatening and mysterious new religion?

Everything he says actually ends up coming true (sort of), was the bit about the affair with the politicians wife a joke or could it mean something? What if its referring to Diana? Could it be important in ZE3?

So many red herrings I don't even know how to sift through real hints and false ones. Pretty sure Diana is someone he meets at the test site though.

Yeah that was what I was thinking, but we don't know what her job is, we can only suppose that Sigma (presumably) falls for Diana.
Maybe getting into a fight over is what makes him lose his arms and eye? Probably thats too simplistic though.

I speculate she is the one who developed Radical 6, which was designed to mitigate effects for space travel (gravity, time perception). Too bad it has such a nasty side effect. Perhaps it was tampered with by Free the Soul for their own purposes?

When you see the hologram of Zero why isn't Sigma like 'This sounds like me but older'?
Anyway surely if you are Zero, Sigma would have to recorded that in 2074 ANYWAY (as he is old) but Young Sigma in Old Sigma's body is in 2074.. so how does that work? Is the hologram another person claiming to be Zero? :s

Old people sound different from young people and people sound different to themselves than they do to other people. The voice coming out of the hologram isn't what Sigma hears when he speaks. :p

Record your own voice and play it back and recoil in horror.

From the word of God in the Q&A:

Maybe it’s because…his processing speed was slowed down. I assume he recognized an old man’s low frequency voice with that of a young person’s high pitched frequency.

On a side note, the reason why he didn’t recognize Doctor Klim’s hologram voice is the same concept of you not recognizing your own voice when you record your voice, since it sounds different.

Old Sigma records the message as Old Sigma in 2074 before jumping back, no? Not quite sure on your question.

When I was in high school, I did exactly just this. When I had to tape myself for my Japanese class like a half-decade later, I actually enjoyed my voice on tape (which was a surprise to me because of my slight impediment).

And every time I see this thread bump, I still lust for that final game in the series.

OK, I didnt realise that :D Fair enough.
You're right about the voice recording thing, I used to record my voice on tape a lot when I was in secondary school/high school :D

Or maybe contact that lady who is interested in making that Titanic replica... >_>

.... I'd actually pay a good amount of money to go to a 999 themed puzzle park!

Austin, TX had one of these a couple years back iirc.

Just finished the whole thing (First 3DS game, yay), despite the interesting twists in the last half, I didn't get the same "mindfuck" feeling Ever/999 had.

I understand it's the second episode of a trilogy so story-wise it's pretty much bound to sacrifice a lot of things in order to set up things for the third episode, but i think the game could have done a better job with some things, namely Phi character for example. I understand Uchikoshi wanted her to be a complete mystery, but I really feel like he took things to far. The only significant clue about her character is her pendant, but even that it's a complete bit fat "?".

The rest of the of the twists were acceptable, though I bet most Uchikoshi veterans raised an eyebrow at things like
the MC face not being show during the gameplay
. I'm not saying "One trick Pony", but i'm saying "I'm starting to see a pattern here!".

tl;dr version, I felt the story was too ambitious and cloudy for its own good, and while necessary, It made self-contained games like 999 and Ever much memorable and rewarding.

Alice and Clover were totally there for fanservice btw, lol. Really enjoyed Jumpei/Akane stuff though, their romance felt realistic despite all the crazyfuck going on in the series.

Well, VLR probably is the game with the highest number of LTTP threads around here.

Yeah, VLR wasn't nearly as good as 999, and I think a big part of it because they wanted to set up a third game so much. 999 was fine as its own story.

Does anybody here now how to get Ever17 to run on Windows 8.1? It just crashes out before it even loads. Sucks because it ran perfectly fine on Windows 7, but I held of on playing it until now.

If playing it's impossible, is there any good Let's Plays of it?? Preferably screenshot LPs.

While I thought it was pretty good, I agree that it's shortcomings are largely because of the need to set up the 3rd game.

Still <3 the game though. :3

I think the extent of VLR's scope resonated with me more. The decades spent putting the experiment today, the billions of lives lost, just to have a chance to do things differently and save the whole of humanity (or at least create a new better reality).

Less tension and horror for sure though, which is a shame.

I don't mind VLR being effectively used as a springboard for a 3rd game.
I DO have a problem with said game being effectively stuck in development limbo.
We're just three months shy of TWO YEARS since this game was released in Japan with still no word of any progress on the sequel.
A game that's all about "build up" won't hold up over the long-term if what it was building up to never comes out.

For some perspective, VLR was released roughly 2 years & 2 months after 999.
And that was with a platform upgrade (DS -> 3DS/Vita).

They've mentioned they're working on it. The team is and budget is probably miniscule by videogame standards. Probably not that much bigger than some higher end mobile game studios.

To write a game of that caliber that has to tie up a billion loose ends, and then maybe fix the puzzles, and then match or even surpass the graphical polish that VLR had isn't any small feat. Of all the games I'm excited about, if they rushed on this game the potential damage could be catastrophic.

Two years is nothing compared to Persona 5, Last Guardian or FF12 standards.

Hey guys, I just finished VLR for the 3rd time, and I'm 99% sure that [ZE3 Spoilers alert]
Akane is working with brother. There's heaps of evidence for it.

Though this is probably obvious to everybody.

I doubt that
Akane is in league with Brother. I think she wore the robes because she went in as a spy or something

i second by this

There is no question for me that akane know so much about free the soul because she is very close to it. However if brother is as or even more powerfull esper than her , i doubt she can do anything.

There is no reason for her to be with "brother" when their goals are so different. Otherwise all the events in rizolme - 9 don't make any sense or even the secret end.

Heck i can even argue that the "source" alice had was "akane" herself.

I'm the same as you! :( I'm hoping for Jan/Feb news at the latest (?) - after all by then it will be 2 years since VLR was released in Japan. I know its only staffed with a small team/budget but I'm sure Uchikoshi knows how high the demand is among fans.
On the other hand I dont want to the game to be rushed, it should be made how we wants it and I'm sure he has his best stuff up his sleeve!
Since I've started playing the endings again of VLR I'm going a bit crazy, I need to get my fix from other games!

I may have said this here before, but - given VLR's sales, it wouldn't surprise me if ZE3 is on the backburner for Spike Chunsoft at the moment. I would even argue that Dangan Ronpa's success is directly affecting ZE3's (potential) development - given there are now two DR games in development, I could easily see Chunsoft moving some of the ZE staff to work on one of those. They may also not want two of the same 'dark' style of game coming out too close together.

Incidentally, Uchikoshi spoke to 4Gamer recently (along with tons of other Japanese developers), and this was his message for 2014:

When I looked up Ryouta Kosawa [an author he mentioned earlier in the interview] on Wikipedia, I saw he was born in 1973, just like me. In other words, we're both now entering our 40s, so this next year is going to be critical. Actually, it's a little ominous, but one's 40s are also called "fuwaku" [a Japanese term for one's 40s meaning, roughly, "being without misdirection/not being lost"], right? According to Confucius, these are the years when the bewilderments of one's heart vanish; in other words, once you get to be 40, you stop losing your way. I think there's still a lot of delusions and misdirections in my own heart, but even still, I want to keep charging forward in life without losing sight of where I'm going. Next year it seems I'll be facing a lot of new challenges. There's also a couple of games that'll be announced too, I think. One of them might even be a really unusual, deviant kind of game <laughs>. Please look forward to it!

Just had a weird revelation/theory about Phi. I think
she could be Santa's daughter, or possibly Akane and Junpei's daughter (that would be cute), though if she was related to Junpei, wouldnt she look more like Junpei?

Correct me if I'm wrong,
but wasn't it established that Junpei and Akane never saw each other after the events of the first game? I mean, it'd be pretty cute but also impossible as far as I understand it.

Hmm.. I need to find
the conversation where Phi mentions her mother - maybe theres a clue there. Where was that?
She could be Santa's daughter though (?), it could be a 6 degrees kind of thing. If Santa was Zero in 999... remember Uchikoshi's clue was a Zero split in half?
I always assume it means Phi is connected to you but I dont think Sigma and Phi are related, in its way thats too obvious.

There are many different PSP models, not sure which one to get (if I do get one).

Why are you guys blackbarring stuff in a Spoiler thread?

Anyways, one of the most unbelievable--and therefore, *forced*--twist is Sigma doesn't realize that he's an old man. You're telling me that not even *once* during those so many stressful moments he touch his own face, feel his own skin, or whatever?

Heh. I guess suspension of disbelief is in order here, but nonetheless I was quite disappointed about it once I give it a thought.

They took extensive care to not allow mirrors in the "experiment" ..the only problem is the garden where sigma should have been able to see himself ( and he didn't ).
that said , everyone "felt weird"

It's hard to believe , but not unbelievable or impossible.
