- Binding of Isaac
- Dead Cells
- Enter the Gungeon

Three masterpieces with a gigantic skill ceiling.
Came here to look for Dead Cells
Found Dead Cells!
Yep that one is absolutely a masterpiece, and not to mention the love it still receives to this day from devs!
Never imagined to put almost 200 hours into a game like this.. but yeah somehow it got me to do so :D

Ori and the Blind Forest & Ori and the Will of the Wisps. You could tell me these were Nintendo first party games and I’d believe you. Beautiful graphics, visual story telling, incredibly tight and fun gameplay.

Tinykin. Amazingly satisfying gameplay and beautiful graphics.

The guys who made this one previously made two Guns, Gore & Cannoli games. More or less the same gameplay just different setting - you are 30’s gangster fighting tons of zombies. Super juvenile but lots of fun in short gory sessions.
Did not know that! I guess I need to pick this up

Yeah, Dear Esther is a bit much if you're not that into walking sims so I wouldn't necessary recommend it to newcomers to the genre. Still one of my fav since it was the first walking sim I ever played and got me into the genre. Not sure if there's notable difference between the original HL2 mod and the later released Landmark Edition though. 🤔
Have you played Stories Untold and/or Observation? Both are by the same devs and share really interesting concepts for a horror/adventure game. I guess in some ways they would qualify as walking sims since they're narrative driven with some light puzzles, although interestingly enough most of the time you're stationary (particularly in Observation).

Iron Lung is also an excellent and unique horror game. It's very short (max 2 hours of play) but it's really well made. It was made by the Dusk guy, David Szymanski.

Ori is literally a first party Microsoft game (fantastic games, but the opposite of what's being asked here.)

More recently, Bomb Rush Cyberfunk.

So many to list, so little time. For what it's worth, I mostly play 2D sidescrollers, which is what most of these will be:

Bomb Chicken - A puzzle platformer where your only action is laying bombs. This provides two benefits (giving you height and providing a form of offense) while also providing a drawback (nothing is stopping enemies from destroying your bomb stack prematurely). Starts out simple, but later levels can be crazily complex.

Cuphead - Besides the art, the boss battles are just the right amount of challenge. Impossible enough to make you work at defeating them, but with an ample learning curve to never make them be frustrating.

Ender Lillies - A soulslike Metroidvania without the more annoying souls elements, all with some great classical-inspired music and challenging but fair boss battles and quite a bit of customization in your choice of weapons.

A Hat in Time - An excellent 3D platformer with a variety of themes, adoringly cute, and a very satisfying jump-jump-dive-cancel moveset.

Kamiko - A very short and simple top down action game with four large maps that needs to be explored to find the four shrines in each one. Incredibly simple, but reminds me a lot of the original Zelda which is nothing but awesome in my eyes

Minit - A crude top-down adventure game with a unique twist - you automatically die every 60 seconds. That means that you KNOW the next collectible, next story beat, next spawn point, next shortcut you can open, etc is less than 60 seconds away (actually less than 30 since that is hard mode), the secret is in trying to find it.

Shantae series - Charmingly cute, often funny, and feels wonderful to control. Admittedly, the first game is a GB game and therefore not that great, and the second is a digital DS game and also somewhat limited. So just play the third (Shantae and the Pirate's Curse) and go from there.

Splasher - A platformer made by ex-Rayman devs with long, brutal levels (fortunately with generous checkpoints) that involve spraying either sticky goo that allows you to run up walls/ceilings or bouncy goo that turns the ground into a trampoline.

Steamworld Dig 2 - It doesn't do any particular thing amazingly well other than a perfectly tuned gameplay loop. You dig through the mines, eventually run low on resources and return to the surface and amazingly seem to have just enough money made from mining to purchase that new upgrade you wanted to dig further and find the cave you're looking for and switch from mining to platforming at just the right time before mining gets boring.

Sunblaze - OK, I'm actually in the middle of this one at the moment, so maybe it turns into a pumpkin later or maybe I'm still in its glow. But it's a precision platformer with some puzzle aspects, as a lot of the elements on the stage also get manipulated as you move around. 600+ deaths and counting, and I'm still going back for more.

Touhou Luna Nights - A bog-standard Metroidvania in most respects, but also with bullet hell bosses. And a unique time-stopping mechanic. And a mechanic where not stopping time but letting bullets get close to you restores your health. It makes for some excellent risk-reward scenarios.

Hmm... I haven't played them so thanks for the recommendation, I'll add them to my wishlist since they look very interesting and something I'd definitely like to play in the future.

The case of golden idol/return to obra dinn(murder mystery gems), hollow knight(on my top 5 games of all time list), rogue legacy 2(best rogue-lite?), darkest dungeon(very cool), into the breach, a short hike(so sweet), might&magic clash of heroes, monster train, nex machina, kingsway(played like 2 hours but it was fun, I will return to it one day), hotline miami(better than most 3d action games), bastion(better than hades?), fallout 1,5 mod, risk of rain 2, the vanishing of ethan carter. I like battle brothers too but I have to spend more time with it before making a recommendation.

Slay the Spire is the king of the Indies for me. What an impeccably designed game.

Streets of Rage 4 is the best modern bmup, easily, although it's debatable whether it's an indie game.

Cuphead is worth the hype, kind of Contra mixed with Punch-Out in a gorgeous art style.

Tunic has some flaws but it's also a heck of an experience if you go in trying to figure it out yourself (or with a buddy).

Off the top of my head, in no particular order:
  • Hades
  • Stray
  • Neon White
  • Hollow Knight
  • Sifu
  • Ori and the Blind Forest
  • Ori and the Will of the Wisps
  • Vampire Survivors
  • Superhot
  • Tinykin
  • Sea of Stars (a prequel to The Messenger, but a turn-based RPG)

I'm pretty sure someone mentioned it already.

I never tried it, though. Mostly because whenever I'm reminded of that twerp who made this game I'm instantly revolted.

Oh yeah, page 1 post 29. My bad.

Honestly though you shouldn't let that put you off the game it's absolutely incredible.

Pretty much everything I thought of has been recommended already (including Dead Cells, Slay the Spire, Darkest Dungeon and Subnautica), except for Streets of Rogue.

It's a really fun roguelite where you complete mini-missions to progress to the next level while roleplaying as different classes/characters.

Vampire Survivors.

If you like board games for dirt cheap on PC or GOG that go on sale for under $5, check these out. I just play solo against the AI for cheap thrills I doubt any of these games have any real active MP base, so just be prepared it'll probably be you vs AI. Pretty sure I bought each one on deal for under $5 but Roll Player was I think $10 or $12.

- Isle of Skye
- Lords of Waterdeep
- Stockpile
- Sagrada
- Istanbul
- Roll Player
- One Deck Dungeon
- Talisman Origins

It's a time loop game where a bunch of people continually get killed during a casino party.. And it goes to some interesting places, story-wise. Highly recommend this game for its great story and outstanding soundtrack.

Ashen, Celeste, and The Messenger are some of my favorite indie games. I just bought Sea of Stars. I hope the hype isn’t a let down.

Idk it scored higher on Xbox. No idea why it’s got Mixed reviews on PC. A Dark Souls clone, but I liked it. I liked it more than some of the other clones out there.

Great thread! My picks are--

Death's Door gave me major The Legend of Zelda vibes. Neat story, really fun combat, cool bosses, secrets, great level design... Plus you get to play as a cute lil crow!

Great little FPS. Started playing GFR back when it was in early access & its made big strides since release. I really enjoy the difficulty system they have in place. The mix of lots of cool weapons, their attributes, & the randomness of scrolls + skills have made for many, many hours of enjoyment. Plus the characters are cute (I'm partial to OG cat & DLC owl).

Lastly, my favorite! I've played Dead Cells (& all its top-tier DLC) at least 1,000 hrs XD Story is rather in the background, but it's interesting enough. The gameplay is where it's at w/ this game. Excellent levels & level generation, fantastic combat, some challenging bosses, bunch of secrets (some easy to find, others not so much). There's so many synergies w/ the skills combined w/ gobs of weapons, not to mention the many ways to customize / modify your experience btwn outfits or gameplay changes (Hitchcock mode is one of my favorites, & I always have Fruit for foods).

I'd also recommend this visual novel duology. They're comfy and sweet with beautiful pixel art and relaxing soundtrack. You can find them on Switch, PlayStation and Xbox also.

Not sure how much of you guys are into FMVs, but if you have any passing interest in the genre I'd like to recommend these ones:

They have good production value and are mostly well acted.
