Just beat Chrono Trigger for the first time. It was pretty good. The music was wonderful, but the game was incredibly easy.

Yeah, I guess so. But I think the chance for a new one still seems higher than for Breath of Fire.
At least I still have a lot of the series left to play. I stopped playing after the second one wore me down.

I just finished WA1, and as I was watching the credits I remembered. The creator of Wild ARMs left Media.Vision and formed this studio, so no, actually, we will probably not see a new Wild ARMs ever.

Unsurprisingly, my time for WA1 is almost 10 hours quicker than the average time on HowLongToBeat. Heh. I'll start WA2 tomorrow.

I have been meaning to ask this for a while and this seems to be a proper thread.

I have always been fascinated by the Shin Megami Tensei family of games: art, stories, characters, settings, gameplay/battle system and music.
But to be honest, I feel overwhelmed by them, almost scared to play them (I know it sounds kind of silly or stupid, but let me explain below).

I own the following games:

- SMT III: Nocturne (PS2)
- Shin Megami Tensei: Strange Journey (DS)
- Devil Summoner: Soul Hackers (3DS)
- Devil Summoner: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. The Soulless Army (PS2)
- Devil Summoner 2: Raidou Kuzunoha vs. King Abaddon (PS2)
- Digital Devil Saga 1 (PS2)
- Digital Devil Saga 1 (PS2)
- Devil Survivor: Overclocked (3DS)
- Devil Survivor 2 (DS)
- Persona (PSP)
- Persona 2: Innocent Sin (PSP)
- Persona 3 (PS2)
- Persona 3: FES (PS2)
- Persona 3 Portable (PSP)
- Persona 4 (PS2)
- Persona 4: The Golden (Vita)

I probably forgot to write down 1 or 2 titles, maybe.
The only one I invested a semi-decent amount of time in was Nocturne back then. I got up to Matador, which I tried to beat a few times and then got distracted by other games and never went back to defeat him (I still have my save file just before the fight).

While I understood how press turn worked, it never really hit me, plus the amount of mechanics and words the game threw at me made me feel really overwhelmed and scared of screwing things up (the volume of googling I did when a demon learned a new spell or when I wanted to fuse demons was off-putting too). Basically, I knew how hard the game was and I didn't want to make a bad decision while playing, both in story and gameplay (I also remember not having a lot of resources/$, so that made it just a bit more difficult, but I guess that's another point).

I have wanted to go back... or more like, get into the series [again] for a while.
I know Nocturne is supposedly the highlight/highest point/the best of the series, but I would like to start with an easier game to get used to the mechanics, concepts and names (for example, some spells or skills names in Nocturne didn't mean a thing to me [like Hama, Hamaon, Mahama, Mahamaon], probably because I don't know the word(s) etymology).

So, GAF... which one would you recommend for a newbie who doesn't mind a relatively easier SMT experience to get used to and start with the series again (before trying Nocturne one more time)? Portability would be a HUGE plus.
I will be purchasing SMT IV, and I hear it has a few newbie friendly elements, perhaps I should wait for that one?

Thanks in advance.

I was in this exact situation a few months ago so I can relate !
The first SMT game that I completed was Persona 3 on the PSP. It's a great introduction to the series, I played on Normal and had no problems with the difficulty. The lack of animated cutscenes on this version is a shame but as you said portability is a big plus.

Having just finished Persona 4 Golden on the Vita, it's a great alternative to P3 and fusing is made a lot easier but I thought the story was slightly less interesting.

Lufia II on the SNES. I'm about 15h into the game and i'm really enjoying it. It's not quite up there with CT, FFV, and FFVI but it's good enough :)

Not portable, but Digital Devil Saga is newbie friendly. It has the same battle system Nocturne and SMTIV have, but you play with a persistent party rather than having to worry about fusing demons. It's kind of a mix between Nocturne and FFX (and even has a skill system a bit similar to the sphere grid. Also, the games are relatively short compared to the other games, 30 hours at most if you're not trying to tackle the superbosses. You'll also get used to the skill names/demons/etc.

In contrast to the previous two posters, I really struggled to get into Persona 3 as my first SMT game. I actively hated it at first. However, I kept with it and by the end I enjoyed it, but it took a large amount of playtime to get to that point. For me anyway.

Trying to decide what console jrpg to start next.

Think I'm going to beat FFXIIi which I loved, especially the combat/exploration aspects. I realllly liked gambits, they're awesome when linked to fast forward feature in international. Really showed me I am by no means a completionist though. If I beat it tonight I'll be finishing at around 55 hours around level 55 and only having gone through maybe about half of the Level VI marks. Don't have any of the level 3 optional espers. No top tier weapons. Etc. Etc.

I'm still relatively new to JRPGs, the only other ones I've ever completed are FFI, II, IV, and I got pretty close on V.

Some options include...
P3FES (in PCSX2)
Xenoblade (in Dolphin)
Lost Odyssey (surprised to see the price of this going up online, I should probably pick it up at Gamestop soon.)
The Last Remnant (PC)
Zeboyd Games on PC

I have to ask... I've noticed you playing hardcore at rpgs for a long time now so I have to ask. Do you watch youtube or read faqs for speedrunning through these?

Not directed at me, but I'll answer on what I do to give an idea.
Well, I usually play the game and if I'm ever stuck at something I head over to gamefaqs because the guides there are wonderful. Also, sometimes you'll want to read up a boss fight in advance because who knows, you may want to steal an item/weapon that only that boss has, or you would want to equip/stock up on preventative gear to negate certain status effects.

Some of the boards have really useful FAQs or Readme's that thoroughly answer questions to help people.

I don't really use youtube for speedruns or anything at all. I do use howlongtobeat to check times and give myself an approximate aggrgate on game time; it's usually -5 or -10 hours for me from the average gametime.

I do use youtube for action games/puzzles though.

Trying to decide what console jrpg to start next.

Last remnant is superb. Head over to the wikia and check out the sidequests.
Lost odyssey is great too ! very traditional and the story is good.

On ff12, it is a great game. I think the gameplay is far superior to 13's because it mimics a sort of offline mmorpg, and I still prefer the whole levelling up rather than the crystalis of ff13. I'm more of a traditional player.
Man. i recall trying to level grind in that mine area to 99 fighting bats and doing some sort of curaga trick.

Got a PS3 again, partly because of Ni No Kuni.

Just tried the demo last night...man, I'm instantly in love. It's like the perfect jRPG for me. I almost lost it when I got to the world map. So beautiful!

about 80 hours into xenoblade, 30 hours into pokemon black(...and a whole lot more to go).

coming up after xenoblade i'll be replaying ff12, playing nocturne for the first time and it's my first SMT game, and playing rogue galaxy at some point.

as far as handhelds i need to beat dq6, ff4, contact and shiren the wanderer...but that's if i ever stop playing a mixture of pokemon black and my 350+ hour save file in dq9 :(

any recommendations in here for GBA/DS rpg's to pick up?

Hey my first Post! :)

I'm currently playing Ni No Kuni.
I'm almost halfway through and enjoy it so far though it has quite some flaws.

Have so many PSP JRPGS on my backlog.
Don't know what to play after this.

I've played an hour of Radiant Historia and so far it seems good, though a little heavy handed on the exposition and light on combat. I'm sure the pace will pick up with a little more time.

Not "right now" but gonna start after the xbox reveal:

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Golden Sun: Dark Dawn. I've been very, very close to the end for a long time, and I've decided I'm going to try to finally finish it. The Umbral Gear fetch quest is a little tedious.

Chrono Trigger DS and Dragon Quest VI are on hiatus, as is Ni no Kuni. In CTDS and DQVI, I've hit a certain boss in each that is frustrating me too much to keep playing. It's the boss on top of the mountain in the Antiquity era of CT, and Murdaw in DQ6. NNK I just burned myself out on back when it was released.

One of the better wizardry type of games around. And dont let the fact that its filled with chicks fool you. Even the first Dungeon Travelers game which was a Two Heart 2 spinoff, it still was a better wizardry game than a lot of others out there. Big plus to me is has voice work done by Ai Kayano (Alisia - Front Left long red hair) in it :D

But beware though lots of what could be considered NSFW images in the game so play it in the comforts of your home and not in the office lol

In other VA related info, for Imas fans Eriko Nakamura (Monica - Far left, Green Hair + Glasses) and Asami Shimoda ( Tsurara - Far left top - bluish-white / red headgear) also do voice work in the game. Thats actually what got my friend interested in it.

I started with Persona 4 nearly a year ago and haven't touched it in at least eight months. I plan on finishing it this summer.

Sadly, I got spoiled (you know about who) and I'm not as motivated as I used to be.

Atelier Ayesha now.
I'm enjoying it much less than Meruru (it was my favourite from Arland trio). I like new combat and alchemy is interesting, everything else is kinda step back. Doesn't help that I dislike Ayesha so far as all other characters except of Ranun may be.
Hopefully it'll get better later on.

How I miss goodness, fun and joy of early Atelier (Iris) games and Mana Khemia subseries. :(

I'm so jealous. So many interesting PSP JRPGs never getting localized. :<

sooo is renaissance of fate anygood? just got it from lovefilm

you mean resonance? good joke!

Well, it depends. The beginning is amazing, this game is really funny at times, certainly has Style and combat is downright revolution in gaming, exploring is interesting and original too, but, there is always but. Dungeons are beyond boring and a game is very very repetitive, surely not for everyone.

resonance of fate is good, however, like any jrpg, it is when you're somewhere mid game or later is when it gets better.

the gameplay at first is so damn convoluted, even the the best jrpg'ers out there have a hard time figuring it out.

also, i'm still looking for my holy grail of jrpg's; a copy of .hack quarantine; even though I finished it years ago and dinged level 99 with kite...I still want a copy of it.

Finally getting around to playing Dragon Quest VI on the DS. I bought it at release and played a few hours in but life kind of stepped in and I had not played it up until a few days ago since. I restarted my previous save file and am further now than I was anyway.

This is the only main DQ game that I have never played/beaten until present. It's interesting to see the things that they were trying with this back in 95, and it still kills me to this day that we never got V or VI on the SNES. At least with the DS, I have been able to play the them now. (Did I mention that DQV is probably one of the best JRPG's ever made? Such a great story...)

I know VI has a lesser reputation than the others somewhat, but I'm enjoying this nonetheless. I am in the first casino and just won a boatload of tokens. 2 sets of Platinum Armour coming up, please! Next up... More tokens for the 2 Dragon Shields...

Done with my WA2 replay, which took way longer than it should have but honestly, the game is pretty boring to me at parts, and some of the dungeons are poop. Started 3, which is a breath of fresh air in many ways, especially battle speed and controls.

I'm playing Grandia right now, because why not?

Still one of my favorites.

Edit: Oh, and I guess also Suikoden, but I'm doing that one in very short play sessions, so it'll take awhile. Also, the reappearance of X talk on the first page of gaming made my hyped and want to jump back into Xenoblade...

For you guys playing Vagrant Story, how does it hold up? I played maybe five hours of it and loved it but never owned it myself. I'm a big Matsuno fan, and I'm sure I'd still enjoy it, just wondering how it stands up to modern games. PS1 JRPGs tend to be the hardest to go back to next to early PC RPGs.

I played it for the first time this year and the incredibly low inventory limit and constant need to use the storage chest, which takes quite some time to save/load almost ruined the game for me. It may have been my particular playstyle though.

The dialogues, writing, characters, and general plot were all enjoyable.

wild arms 2 was pretty good. I think the final boss battle in that is the best in the series.

3 is decent. dem millenium puzzles. dem bonus bosses.

3 is more than decent in my eyes. It might even be my favorite WA. I liked 2 a little bit more than last time, but not a whole lot more. I've always maintained that 1/3/5 are the best ones. I'll re-evaluate once I'm done replaying them.

Going back to Persona 4:Golden. Took a break 60 hrs in because it got kind of boring. But now the itch to finish the game is back. After that I'll be ready for Pokemon Y/X. Also eager to play Y's: Memories of Celceta.
