White Day: A Labyrinth Named School is still the scariest game to ever exist

I watched a stream of the first third of this and was unconvinced, I found the sound design detestable and crude and the game rather plain, but i'm willing to give it another shot as an actual player.

Being a pussy when it comes to the horror genre is the reason I personally enjoy playing scary games. I love feeling tense.

I've yet to beat Amnesia, though :p

Oh wow, surprised to see a thread about this here! Always thought it was one of those horror games only a scant few had ever heard of; being officially released only in South Korea will do that.

Great little title - not perfect, but definitely a solid horror game and worth playing for anybody who wants something a little different. Apparently the English fan translation is better than the one that existed before? Might have to play it again.

True story: Got the worst ending first time through. Be careful about which choices you make along the way!
Not trying to spoil but it might be best to 'stick' with So Young.

Man I really freaking hate scary stuff, absolutely hate anything to do with it. Props to the people that can play these games, you are amazing.

Rent Fatal Frame 2, and put the controller down after you get past the start menu and into the game. Walk away for a couple minutes, then come back and stare at the screen.

Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

I've always wanted to play this game, heard it was terrifying, but I never heard that it was translated or anything.

Is there a place you can still purchase this game or what?

edit: oh shit, abandonware! Miseed that the first time through. I had no idea. Nevermind, I'm all over this

Downloaded the game over the Summer, never bothered to install it.

Might as well play the game during the Halloween season.

Sounds neat, though I feel you may talking it up a little too much. Outside of the Fatal Frame games, I don't get scared of things, so this might be interesting for me.

Hoping that's not the case! That's why I will play at a higher difficulty like the OP suggested, maybe hard or real, depending on how I feel tonight.

The only thing I really dislike in horror is soul crushing content, i.e. a hopeless ending, like in
Corpse Party and, say, House of 1000 Corpses
.

That movie sucks.

Anyway, game won't even open for me and I checked out that FAQ(you should add to the OP). I did everything I could too :(

What's the exact error? See if I can help. Like it won't launch when you click 'Launch/Play Game', or it won't launch the launcher?

When I click play game, it basically says it encountered an error and closes on me, also clicking on device settings really does nothing for me, just some message pops up and I click okay.

I don't think I can play this game. I played it for about 50 minutes before I had to stop. It's so tense. I'm scared of opening every door, I tripped over some asshole bucket that made a really loud noise that made me jump, and the ghosts (as cheap as they look) made me shiver EVERY TIME. That noise they make is like nails on a chalkboard. I haven't even had an official encounter with the Janitor yet. It's gonna take a while for me to finish.

Oh I will once I find the time. Unfortunately, the most I can play it at night is once a week since I have class in the mornings. Playing at night is the way to go.

This looks interesting. I'm subscribing to the thread so that I can remember to get this game and try it out when I have time.

Well, so far I can see why the game is so highly regarded. Great atmosphere.

Scariest game ever made? Not really. But it's quite good.

Hmm, some reason install exe isn't working for me. just pops up then goes away

I had the same problem. Go into the Disc folder and use autorun.exe instead.

EDIT: Beaten!

Ohhh, looks interesting. Putting together a compilation of scary/horror movies + games to go through all next month, will put this on it.

I'm downloading this right now. Does anyone know how it stacks up to Amnesia: The Dark Descent? I played the demo of that and loved the atmosphere.
EDIT: Wait, it's only $20 on Steam? Will purchase this weekend.

How the hell do you save the game on hard difficulty??? I played for about an hour and couldn't find any of those marker pens or whatever.

I had this problem too. I played about an hour; the game is definitely up there in terms of tension, however, I'm not sure I can say this scared/creeped me out more than both Amnesia and the Fatal Frame series. I will play more and see where it takes me; thank you again for bringing this game to GAF's attention.

It's not reductive. I watched a long stream of it, and nothing happened that scared me. I was asking if, if that didn't really scare me, if the game pulls any better tricks. I love me some horror games.
What you need to remember is that playing a horror game and watching a horror game are very different.

My encounters with the janitor, the main enemy so far, maybe make up like 5% of my playtime. That's practically nothing. So if someone would see me play, he'd only see me wander through dark hallways with crude visuals, and only very rarely something that is threatening to the player. Of course that wouldn't look scary. But as the janitor's AI and appearance is highly randomized, and because he can pop up and chase you everywhere, he can be extremely terrifying.

That's the beauty of the enemy design in games like this one, Frictional's output or the Clock Tower franchise: The enemy could be everywhere and therefore in the mind of the player he is everywhere, potentially lurking behind each corner. The result is that although there's only 5% of actual "combat" with this enemy, there is 95% of being worried about it. They're Shrödinger's Enemies; Everywhere and nowhere, so you play in a state of tension and fear.
