Why DMC3's Vergil is the Best Rival in Gaming (Also Free Copies of DMC4 PC)

Morrigan in Devil May Cry's world would be interesting. But I'd prefer her with Dante. lol

But back to the thread... great post, OP. The final battle against Vergil in DMC3 was one of the best I ever had playing video games.

Dante wants to steal Vergil's girl.

Nero being a clone of Vergil made by Mundus is the only thing that makes sense to me. Not a demon in the shape of a human, like Trish, but a full-blooded clone. It fits Mundus' character as well, given he supposedly carried out biological experiments according to Leviathan's profile.

Mundus needs to make clones that dont turn on him.

Vergil has proper motivation. Isn't the implication that his lust for power is fueled by his desire to never feel helpless again after watching his mother killed before him? It's a defense mechanism where he handles the trauma very differently from Dante. Whereas Vergil embraces the demonic side of himself because he knows it can satisfy this overwhelming need, Dante suppresses it within himself because he hates all things demon, including that part of himself.

This pretty much. It's practically said in DMC3.

Vergil: Why do you refuse the power, of our father Sparda? Without it you can not protect anybody...let alone yourself.

Geeze I always have immense flash backs to the Credo fight. Love the way he looks and how the fight goes down. Mad he only shows up once, compared to everything else being 3x

I really wish I liked DMC3 more.... game just never really clicked with me. Combat system was insanely complex and it took 2 or 3 completions of the game to get the hang of it, setting and enemies were an olympic jump backwards from DMC1. I did like the Dante Vergil rivalry though, and LOVED the jester character, that guy doesnt get nearly enough credit as easily the best bad guy next to Vergil, game just didnt impact me as much as DMC1 or 4.
Kinda bummed DMC4 didnt go all in on Nero. His move set was simpler than DMC3, but had tons of room for growth had they gave him the both weapons. Just a much more fun character to play especially with the grabs and such, but they got frightened and just threw in DMC3 Dante in the last half and gave him all the toys.

Really hoping Nero, Vergil, and Dante are all playable in 5. With more focus on Nero....lame character, great character to control. Not nearly as unwieldy as Dante or Bayonetta

Thanks for the givaway. Best of luck to everyone who entered. (Besides winning DMC4 would be a cool Birthday gift anyways)

One of my favorite rivalries would be Riou and Jowy from Suikoden II

I guess Kyo and Iori from KOF is another one I like.

gratz to those who won, thanks for doing this OP!

(I must admit I didn't read the thread because I haven't played a DMC game but after playing platinum's recent titles like MGR and Vanquish I definitely plan to!)

Thanos acquires the fully powered Infinity Gauntlet in The Avengers: Infinity War, but loses when all the superheroes team up together to stop him.
Bah, guess I didn't win. Oh well.

I'm glad they let us play as Dante in DMC4.

His cutscenes were amazing. Every single one of them.

And the ability to switch between styles was great.

He looks cool, and is fun to control, but I don't share your passion for his characterization. I feel the "rival to aspire towards" motif was executed more effectively elsewhere. Great that you put so much effort into the OP though, nice job.

Where should I play DMC 3? I have it on PC I believe, but should I play it on PSN or get a PS2 and play it on that? This thread has me very interested in playing DMC now.

There are three viable options. All will run at 60fps and control well (though the PC version may require some effort on your part). If you already have a PS3, I'd recommend just picking up the HD Collection since it's the least labor intensive. Since you may already have the game on PC, maybe try some of the fixes proposed below to get it working properly:

1) DMC HD Collection
Almost perfect, if barebones, adaptation of Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition. There is a very rare freezing issue that some people have cited, but it is otherwise probably the quickest, and least labor-intensive way to play the game in HD.

$29.99 on PSN

2) Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition- PC (Steam)
This will take some work. The port is very shoddy and requires a macro program + Xpadder-like program to get a controller functioning properly. Here are two pages with some recommended steps: http://steamcommunity.com/app/6550/discussions/0/864969320373351964

It also has slowdown and incompatibility issues with some cards until certain music tracks are removed from the game. A lot of people claim not to have this issue:

If you don't already own this, it will likely go on sale during the Winter sale (starting tomorrow potentially) for $4.99, and bundled with DMC4 for $7.49 if past sales are any indication. DMC4 is a gorgeous and perfect port, so no worries there.

3) Devil May Cry 3 Special Edition- PS2
Classic way to play the game in SD. Be sure to get the Special Edition, since it has all the extras and playable Vergil, as the base non-Special Edition will not have these.
