Added.

I'm going to revive the old LP with a signup notification, but since it sounds like there are some interesting changes brewing in the next hotfix (mainly item damage stuff), I might wait to post a public thread.

Ohhhhh my god. I did my first landed medium. Except, when I got the the mission screen I went to have lunch. So for the first few waves I completely forgot I was on a medium. My people handled them like true champions.

My first contact was my first encounter with Mutons! Luckily, I was trying to overwatch draw some Floaters so my rocket and crew were set up just right to scramble together some resistance. One Steady Aimed rocket and 3 clutch long range flank shots later, I take out 3 Mutons and a Sectoid. That shit was scary man.

After that I got tired of waiting for the Floaters to path (they were actually stationary) so I found a nearby rocklog across the river from my starting position (where I also handled the Mutons) and hid my Assault and Gunner in the center of it's 4 block heavy cover. I scouted them with the Scanner and activated with the Gunner. The initial moves the Floaters made scared the everliving daylights out of me though! They straight up tried to pincer attack me! 2 went to the right, 1 to the left, and the last one ran straight over the rocklog into my Assaults overwatch. That was the highlight of my mission. The only thing that saved me from the flanks was a good Shredder from across the stream and Executioner Infantry that I hunker-hid down in the riverbank. The one on the left I dealt with with a Shotgun.

Then, because I didn't have enough excitement already, Seekers! After I used my only Battle Scanner on the Floaters. So basically, a shit ton of overwatch. Constantly. Squad came through for me twice. One even went after my Sniper and two of them destroyed the damn thing when he revealed. After that, some weird Sectoid, Floater, Thin Man pod that was handled easily though not without taking unnecessary fire.

Truth be told, the biggest surprise was the two Outsiders I didn't know there were two of. Some how some way I breached correctly with my Scout and Sniper on half cover high ground and Assault ready to go. Open the door. Move up, flank shot. Two Executioner shots with Holo-Targetting. Run and Gun through the cockpit to the others backside, Shotgun Flank. End mission.

The loot is glorious too. It's like my birthday! Alloys and Fragments ahoy! Now I can actually build crap.

Damnit. Hit a reproducible CTD bug in my test stream. Gonna see what's up.

/edit okay as soon as I post that I double-check the save file and my turn ends without a hitch. Eh???? Oh well whatever.

It then hung on a suppression that never returned control back to me. Ugh. That's why you bronzeman.

Someone run me through the basics of kB/m controls plz

As above camera control is most appreciated
Camera controls in Long War are by holding down the middle mouse button. I'm not that good with it, though. Also the F keys do stuff, it's in the Long War readme.

What I do like about the mouse is that XCOM actually uses the default Forward/Back buttons that pretty much only work for web browsing for previous and next soldier.

Should I stick with B14 and wait for another update? Or does it seem pretty solid?

If you have a b14 campaign and it is still interesting, finish it for sure.

I think you should wait for b15a, the first fix update for b15 to come out before updating. The item repair stuff is really sort of fubar at the moment-I would disable item breakage in the INI if you are on b15 until the fixes come out.

Regarding cameras-the big ones are:

F2 for view from the top down
F3 for the default pan angle
F9 for the ground level pan. This is also the "meld scanner" camera angle that everyone uses to find meld can outlines in the fog at the start of a map.

I also find it useful to go into the options, Interface options and set the default camera panning far to the right. This makes it so when you swap soldiers you stay zoomed out.

Also learn to love ALT+O (everyone who can overwatches) as well as using shift and tab to rapidly cycle through troops. The latter part is actually a big help in improving your tactical game, one of the things that makes people play bad is that they don't cycle through their squad to see what they have to work with before moving people around in a turn.

I couldn't figure out which one was default, it was F3 all along! I say all along, I'd only done the first mission in b14 when b15 hit. It's possible I would have figured it out but thanks for the bolded, I didn't see that at all. I'm going to watch more of Beaglerush's stuff and wait for b15a then.

Maybe a stupid question, but long war is (still) fine using a controller (360)? Or are there features strictly reserved for m+kb?

Perfectly, 100% playable via controller. The very last item I think wasn't working (interceptor renaming?) was addressed at some point in b14.

I can't wait till beta15 gets a couple patches up to fix bugs, all the changes look excellent. I especially love the Gauss changes, my favorite weapons just got even better.

Dynamic War option is pretty screwy right now. Lower than .5 and there are some pretty messed up balance things going on (corpses, fatigue, UFO missions).

Ah, my XCOM save files did return from the cloud, neat. But copying over the XCOM folder in steamapps/common and asking Steam to accept it did have the side effect of reverting to vanilla XCOM:EW.

Time to re-reinstall Long War.

Hmmm. Still on B14, but does anyone find that playing with Red Fog makes makes mecs limited in their use? They get hit and their aim starts to drop off rapidly as does their ability to launch grenades a good distance...and they are damn easy to hit.

Seriously starting to regret all the resources I dumped into mecs lately.

Hey, does anyone know how to use the Camo mod, or I guess any of the other texture mods on the nexus. Installing as instructed doesn't actually do anything because texmod can only start the launcher, not the actual game. :/

Many LW players play with a different distribution of red fog penalties:

If Red Fog mecs are a problem, consider running longer range "shooty" options like Valkyries and Jaegers with an Alloy SHIV to tank.

I got a Swarming on the India Train mission... I can't do it. I've been restarting this mother f'er all last afternoon and this morning. There's too many Thin Man, too many Seekers and everything activates at the same time. There's not enough cover facing the right way and and... I can't. Should I just abort mission? I've tried everything. I've tried save scumming for enemy positions, everything still activates simultaneously. I've tried Battle Scanning, everything activates at the same time. I'm going to try Battle Scanning and sniper pulling one more time but I'm hesitant it'll work.

I can abort missions right? That's a think I'm reasonably allowed to do, yes?

Not all Long War missions are winnable. If you cannot find any way to complete it, it is fine to take the shots you can and get the heck out of there and give the aliens that one. Just remember to have ALL your troops in the blue rectangle first.

But it's okay, Long War is also made to be able to take a hit like that. You can recover. In fact, winning everything is a little ahead of the curve. You will lose out on the resources you could get, and the alien strategy AI gets a small bonus for winning one against you, but losing troops hurts a lot more.

And if this does cause you to lose India, you can take it back later.

I went daft and thought that a landed medium UFO around March 10ish meant a Large Scout so sent five rookies with the one Specialist out of fatigue from the starter mission.
Abort abort abort.

Ooh, what did you get there? Other than way too many aliens to handle?

No idea, aborted as soon as I realised my mistake on landing. I did send a sacrificial rookie to peek round the nearest corner and revealed the Outsider pod but that was it.

Nevermind! I went full overwatch/concelment trap. They can't shoot you if they can't see you. And they can't shoot you if they put themselves in flanks to see you. Hid my entire crew in a C shape Box/Train fixture. And inside the trains. I did have to continuously run my scout back and forth between turns to pull overwatch and lure them in though. That was scary. A freaking Thin Man Panicked my Assault who was going around for the flanks too. That made the mission take 15 minutes longer than it should have.

Tsk tsk. I did the same.

He probably saw his first Muton and got the F out of there.

I bought EW for full since it's worth it, but everything XCOM is in a nice bundle for $12.50 instead of over $60 for 24h now:

This is thread worthy. Especially with Long War being content complete.

Oh, heads up on a bug in the current version. If your soldier gets wounded or killed, there's supposed to be a chance that the armor and weapons he or she is carrying gets damaged and will need repairs.

That's not the bug. That's Long War as intended. The bug is that Long War will DELETE your weapon in some cases where it had to check if it became damaged. To counteract this, get the Dev Console from the download page as well and just cheat yourself a new weapon to replace the deleted one. This should be fixed in b15a as the damage and repair code is basically getting completely overhauled.

Also coming there, all Meld costs double, all Meld rewards double as well. To preserve continuity, you can cheat yourself to double the Meld you have when that update arrives.

Yeah, item deletion is a rather serious bug in XCOM. I'm stalling for b15a as well. And got caught by a Hyrule Warriors bug, so I'm playing that at the moment. That game likely has a difficulty curve. It's shaped like a rollercoaster, at least in Adventure Mode.

I've been playing Iron Brigade. My first tower defence game evarrrrrr! Wish it played a little better, but it's charming nonetheless.

Also I don't feel bad about losing it since I've never played the genre before

- Activated Deadeye perk, which grants +10 aim and +10 crit against airborne targets. Will be available to Infantry, Scout, Shogun and Pathfinder.

I know LW is kind of like an endless cycle of "Can't wait for B(x+1)(a+1)" but yesssssssss fuck you tiny flying half-muton runts

Make it an item and I'm in. Or against Damn Good Ground.
That awkward moment when you accidentally put together a GI Janes team. I needed a squad to rank up and some people to carry them and my squad came out as 4 Rookies, 2 Specialist, and 2 Corporals.

The mid to endgame economy is so much rougher in b15 than b14. Foundry nonsense and essential gene mods just chew through what little meld you can get. There has to be a better medium between b14 "always have 200+ spare meld" and b15 "flat broke always and forever", right?

Don't even get me started about weapon fragments. Unlike Alloys and Elerium, you can't workshop your way to discounts on those, and the foundry will clean your clock and leave you needing hundreds more.

Saw that 15a tones down a few requirements, although real balancing won't come until later numbers, bugs are the priority.

I'll be excited when Dynamic War let's me finish a 40 hour run of Long War, but that's going to require some additional changes.

I definitely prefer a surplus. Being resources starved in all 4 major resources sounds like the antithesis of fun. It used to just be alloys once you hit pulse/mecs and elerium once you hit plasma.

whelp on my third 'testing my recording equipment' run I activated 2 pods at once on the very first mission with a straggler from another pod still active and so faced about 9 active sectoids at once with 6 rookies :T

got out of there with a bad plasma burn and no casualties, but that was really tense for a bit

Anyway I think I'll post the recruitment communique tomorrow if I can fiddle around with ini modding tonight

/edit found the right places in ini. Hopefully they've panned out.

//edit well I started the game and it didn't crash, so that's a good sign. I think we're about ready.

Count me in for Bradford still. And do overplay his tendency to state the obvious and going from very sure to easily swayed by arguments. "There's no way we should ever let our men get that close to an alien. Unless we can capture one and... interrogate it."

I already changed the Arc Thrower's accuracy multiplier in mine. Got a recommended number? I went with 0.85 of base.

So with an issue with bitpacking perk information as a way of adding new perks for foundry updates , anyone upgrading from b15 to b15a who has the advanced medikit upgrade gets free deadeye everywhere. BUT you lose advanced medkit perk, which is actually really bad.

<:::::[]=¤༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ﾉ stand back foul heavy floaterinos <:::::[]=¤༼ຈل͜ຈ༽ﾉ

edit: also, existing tech sergeants gunners get a "free GSGT" perk due to the reording there, which was really needed as their double shot perks came really late in the tree.

edit: aaand b15b is now out.

The doubling of the Meld really helps , BTW. You still don't get as much as you used to from alien kills, but you still get a trickle (instead of the none, like you used to) and it works out to about 80-100 meld (basically , one project's worth or a MEC trooper's worth) in the campaign's first five months or so, from my napkin math.

Speaking of which, I need to gift myself more Meld right now. Couple of questions if someone would please.

How do I rollback one of my troops perks? I want Deadeye on my Infantry who took Ranger. Nevermind? Also, is the entire perk tree visible by default now? Or did I mess with something earlier?

And seriously these aliens. They just doubled me on Terror Missions within 3 days of each other. I don't have the firepower to deal with this stuff. Doesn't help that I keep throwing my Assaults into the midst of danger and getting them all Medbay time. All 4 of mine are out for >7 days. Anyway, that's why I need to rollback one of my troops perks.

lol outsiders now got them jumpy legs

They can use them on activation too, not just to hunt you down. I did a landed transport and an alien base assault tonight (back to back, fatigued the A-team to hell and back) and had a couple of times where outsiders made some pretty aggressive moves to higher ground-good in some cases, but here I just blew out their cover and wrecked them.

I think this Deadeye perk is pretty good. Not sure if better than Ranger good, but pretty good. There is a lot of flying bullshit in this game. and deadeye wrecks it.

BTW if you haven't discovered what overwatch infantry with gauss rifles and reaper rounds does, you should get on that.

Looks good. Looking forward to eating cyberdisc cannon in the face in the base defense.

Last night's base assault was hilarious-easy early pods and then a full six pack of straight Muton Elites (first in the campaign) and then a full six pack of Heavy Floaters (again, first big batch of the campaign) in the same room. There were four pods (Muton Elites,Thin Men, command pod, and Heavy Floaters) in the last room, and it was in the crowded last room with all the LOS and not the big open one with the huge ramps. I finished that mission with nothing but one medikit charge left as consumables.

Then Dr. Shen took all the goodies and blew it all one like ONE foundry project. Granted it was armored fighters. But still, dude, can we talk efficiency at some point?

So yeah.

France or US?

Both the Orlei and the OTS starters don't really kick in until say end of month 1 (Orlay is capped both by research and by resources, while OTS obviously has its own set of requirements)... Frag posted a pretty convincing thing earlier, but the snowball effect of Orley could be really powerful late-game.

Not that you're ever swimming in resources in this game.
