XCOM: Long War | A mod for XCOM: Enemy Within

I think he just edits his video, to grab them all at the loadout screen then pastes it out at the bottom; it's not a mod or anything.

Yeah, in a video I watched in the last few days he mentions waiting for their name to scroll across and appear properly on the panel so he can screenshot it.

Oh, looks like one of my comments over on Nexus turned into a balance change for b15c. All UFOs will now crash when defeated during the first months. It's a blatant violation of common sense that they can't explode mid-air until April, but that first UFO kill is too important in research and alloys to postpone too long. So, yeah. Stupid, but a sacrifice in the name of resource balance.

Are you sure? He has these big "scroll left" "scroll right" buttons and his models update when he scrolls left or right past his initial six.

Oh, I thought you meant the overlay at the bottom of the loading screen at the start of his videos. I'm not understanding what's different then, the squad scrolling seems the same in the game as in Beagle's videos. Something joypad-related maybe or am I confused again?

Might be it... I haven't been on the mission loading screen with kB/m before guess I'll see if that does anything. With a 360 controller plugged in you can scroll the name and loadouts with your bumpers, but the models don't update until you click to enter the load out screen...

Yeah, not sure if it's a controller vs. keyboard thing. Like a few things the LW team probably didn't add the functionality in because they weren't expecting it (like the air game stances I think).

Perhaps they changed it so the buttons don't show up until you grab one of the squad size upgrades or something now?

If you have the squad size upgrades but you can't pan to soldiers 7 or 8 then it might be a controller thing. I think it should be a simple tweak if you let the LW team know that's an issue.

I wonder if I'm the only idiot out there playing LW with a controller.

I'm just so used to it, kB/m actually feel awkward to me

Wish you could just use both on the fly. I'd love to have camera control while tossing nades

Is there anyway I can delay Gangplank? Does it come back again later on if I fail/abort it? Are there any consequences for skipping it entirely? Honestly I had the DLC enabled mainly to obtain Zhang, he's a pretty huge asset. Not sure if the resources you get from Gangplank are really worth it for me right now. I've reached Beam Laser, but I'm still researching Advanced Beam Laser. Did any of you take on Gangplank at a similar state?

Oh, nice tweak. UFO RNG like that is the least in the players control, and has a massive effect on the entire campaign. Softening it a bit is smart.

Alright. In fact, screw Gangplank. I almost got squad-wiped just now with a landed Scout UFO. Somehow all 4 out of 5 pods activated on their own during an alien turn, and there were 2 Cyberdiscs amongst them. FML. Wouldn't have made it out alive with the barely breathing Medic and Sniper if it weren't for a couple miraculous dashes through Cyberdisc Overwatch.

I think, I'm boned.
I was keeping a nice relative stranglehold on the aliens until October, keeping them contained to North America. But then they started stacking Terror Missions. They did that for 2 month and now they have the entire western hemisphere and Africa. They have one half of the world and I have the other. I've been so focused on Research and the Barracks that I have like 10 MSGT and am making my first Plasma Rifle, but the aliens have momentum now. They steamrolled 3 continents and now they're coming for me! Lets put it this way, I finally saw my first dual plasma gun alien fighter. I feel a base Assault coming on too.

IIRC you have to take the first mission (graveyard Zhang extraction) when it shows up but you can ignore the second and third missions to eke out some equipment/troopers if you want. Every time you decline you can spin the globe for a few hours before the council asks again, I delayed the second mission a couple of times to get an Arc Thrower ready in one playthrough. No idea if that's still the case in LW though.

Okay. Why the hell. would a flying unit like Floater have Close Combat Specialist. How often do XCOM's get that close to a Floater for it to develop CCS.

Man I lost my best Assault just like that. Ughhh

You have to F1 literally every single enemy if you want to be a good Commander.

Meanwhile, I carved a path of death and carnage and destruction through my second to last EXALT mission. My Damage Engineer came back, I brought my two Mechs, and there was nothing EXALT could do to halt my slaughter. It was the fountain and we basically played King of the Hill while my Operative played Duck Duck Goose with the amazingly placed transmitters. One of my MSGT Infantry came out with 1HP and is out for a month and a half but she was an Overwatch build aka effectively useless these days.

I would've done that if I'd finished Floater Autopsy. But alas. This might've been an indication that I've fallen a bit too far behind the aliens now. So I guess I'll have to restart.

Well I mean... I can't tell without some stats. What's your research like? What month are you at? As long as you haven't surrendered half the globe (like I have) to the aliens, you should be able to bounce from anything. Unless you meant restarting the mission (Bronzeman).

I think I'm actually on the verge of restarting everything myself too. I just got to Mechs and to be honest, without watching a whole lot of Beagle videos, I don't really know what to do from December on. I'm basically just lost. I figure I'm gonna get stonewalled because I researched wrong and start losing continents because I really really don't have enough interceptors.

2017 in Long War in three easy steps:

A) clear out remaining alien bases to get resources for firestorms w/ EMP
B) get a few more MECs
C) flying LMG gunners and snipers

Do these things and you'll be OK.

Nah I meant restarting the campaign. Was doing pretty badly with that one anyway. The 2 steam vents I had in that one were both on the 3rd and 4th level, and somehow I thought it was a good idea to rush excavating just to have the Thermos set up, so that I wouldn't have to build any early Fission. But doing that really just bit me hard - spending a good chunk of cash on just excavating, unable to build anything else because no money and no power.

On a different note, you ever had this happen to you where you just have a Scout throw a Scanner and as she takes a step up to throw the thing, she activates a pod (and most likely ends up flanked?) I don't think I ever had that happen in vanilla before, but maybe it's always been a thing. Really annoying regardless. Force-quit without any guilt.

Feels like I've only been saying nothing but complaints on here so I do apologize to you guys if I do come off as such.

My Long War (beta 15) keeps crashing to the desktop whenever I try to load a game. I've tried deleting save files, uninstalling and reinstalling the mod, uninstalling and reinstalling the game (I've basically went through the entire checklist in the troubleshooting readme). I'd been able to put around 50 hours into a campaign before it started suddenly crashing. Any ideas?

No clue, you're probably gonna want to ask Lump.

in the meantime b15c (and c2 lol) are out
Heh, a quick typo fix in the code making Quenchguns cost 500 fragments less.

I've installed this already, and the Dev console to get the new Drum Mags item. They're supposed to be infinite from the start, so it's not cheating. Since I have a game that's literally just a Terror Mission behind your LP, I'll see if it messes up anything on an ongoing campaign. My Scouts transferred over fine and they've be re-tree'd. I think if they're under Tech Sergeant level, they're good. Concealment at Tech is going to be awesome. I wonder if I can get this one up to that before the first EXALT show up...

The console command to get the Drum Mags is: GiveItem END_SHIP_WEAPONS 99

Yes. That doesn't make much sense, but Long War does balance on a knife-edge with its items. That's not a ship weapon, it's ammo drums.

Fucking strat game. I'm not going to have an uplink and NA covered until mid-may at the earliest. I'm an idiot.

I just entered May in my game, got three sats over Asia, but it's going to be a while before I claim China and complete the set. Got an armor production set up, though, so that'll be nice. Got some Power buildings in production, a Foundry and the OTS, so soon I'll be much more powerful strategically.

Good thing, too, the Terror Mission wnet south. Not that I lost any troops. I just figure that I'm supposed to save more than six civilians. Never seen the Zombie Apocalypse due too Chryssalids having fun in the new XCOM before. Now I have. And that's why I brought dual Assaults with Close Combat specialist. Go on, try to melee. You have to pass those two first. ...and then they ran offscreen and murdered three civilians. Clever critters.

And the the Council called. "Hey, go pick up this Triad guy!" I hate that mission. I'm giving everyone a medkit for this, because, well, Thin Men. Way too many Thin Men.

Building the repair bay first was a huge mistake. I was scared of repair but a) i had nothing to break in the first month anyway and b) nothing's broken so far because nobody's getting hit yet! (Except the rooks, poor rooks)

So stupid. Should've gone sat --> lab ---> fusion --> workshop --> ots/foundry.

Goddamnit.

McNum

Yeah. I did the same with the Repair Bay early. That's a mistake. I'm entering May and have had nothing other than Interceptors broken so far. The next week will see a Fission Plant, the Foundry, and the OTS go online, so all I need is cash for the third sat uplink. Then a Steam Plant should come online soon.

I'm a little worried that I'm falling behind on weapons, still running Ballistics, but I got some Phalanx Armors coming in. Two ready to go, two in production. I'm wondering if I should try to catch a Thin Man to get Laser research credit, but I have neither Alien Containment nor Arc Throwers yet, so probably not.

Are the Long War modders attempting or thinking about attempting to randomize time of day on mission maps; i.e. allow for playing the Burger King map at sunset, for example? Or are light sources and stuff too hardcoded to maps to do that?

Lighting on the maps is baked in. The map will have to be redone to change time of day for it.

Damn. I made the mistake of upgrading to 15d, and now the game is crashing every time there's an alien drop-in. You guys know if there's anyway to revert to an older version?

Have Steam verify the game, and then go delete the Long War folder in the XEW folder of your XCOM installation. then reinstall the older version into your now vanilla game. You probably don't want to load a save made in b15d with any earlier version, but if you have a c2 save, just load that.

So I just got to MECs for the first time. I've never used MECs before, not even once, not even back in vanilla. I thought I could make do with just normal soldiers with gene mods, but LW has kinda convinced me otherwise.

Do you guys have any general tips on how to build and use MECs?

As McNum mentioned, it's hardcoded. Map variety like that can only happen in a sequel (if Firaxis decides to make one). As much as I like the new game, the loss of procedural map generation was a big disappointment for me.

Oh, by the way, a stable version of beta15d2 is out now over on Nexus. There was a crash problem with Run and Gun in b15d, but that's fixed now.

Highlights include ammo changes to shotguns and stuff now costs more Elerium and less Alloys. Plus a neat UI improvement in Engineering that shows how many Weapon Fragments you have right there.

Finally got to the point in my Beta 15 campaign where I can shoot down Terror Ships. No more free meals, fuck-os, from now on I'm getting alloys when you spam these BS missions that you couldn't possibly have the supplies to actually fund.

So I've placed a Satellite over a lost country, and nothing happened. What do I have to do to initiate the alien base assault mission?

Also, man, somehow I just lost another country that was pretty much at zero panic, just because I ignored a few consecutive Large and Very Large UFOs, because I simply don't have the firepower to fight them - only got one Firestorm parked in another continent. And now my monthly income is at a negative 130 or so. That really sucks. Is XCOM like the original game where if you have a negative income for 3 months or so then you lose? I don't have that information and can't quite find it anywhere.

Alright so it's appeared now. Took them 10 days to find the damn base. I was worried something had gone wrong with my game.

What a crazy start to my most recent campaign.

March 12: Landed large shows up in the USA, my starting location. Ends up being a transport. With a couple of bronzeman mission restarts, I manage to take it down with a SPEC Assault KIA and some other moderate wounds. Woo! I sell a bunch of stuff and get a nice headstart on my base building and interceptor fleet.

March 31: I put up a satellite over Canada

April 1: Landed transport shows up in Canada. Nice! By this time I have Squad Size I upgrade (took the OTC discount for my starting perk) and a healthy mix of Cpl and LCpls. Again, after 2 bronzeman restarts (yes, I know) I manage to complete the mission with a month-long wound to my engineer and a fatigue wound to my gunner officer.

April 2: Landed transport #3 shows up again in Canada!?! Literally hours after the previous one.

If this is a fluke, it's a pretty crazy one. Maybe some sort of bug that re-generated the research mission for the aliens? Or is there some alien AI thing going on, like they decided to rush Canada as their next target after the initial infiltration in the UK? I'm not complaining - the loot is great and since I'm shamelessly bronzemanning the missions the downside is limited. Plus, I have to imagine losing three transports will put the aliens back a bit. I've just never seen anything like this.

AlexVu

Neo Member
That's happened to me a few times before. Sometimes aliens DO rush their missions on a particular country to increase the panic as fast as they can. If you're able to take those landed UFOs down, then all the power to you. Usually at that point I outright can't do it.

From the upcoming hotfix notes:

Gunner gets Opportunist instead of AFC, +2 aim at Covering Fire, +2 aim at Ready For Anything.

Welcome back OW gunners. Opporunist is a crazy buff.

Not feeling the change to Reaper Rounds. I get that it is trying to make Pulse better but at the same time Gauss Rifle+Reaper Rounds was such a huge midgame upgrade. :/

- Removed pier map from possible covert extractions

good riddance, what a shitfest that map was for extraction

So this command ability thing is really good. :D

I burst out laughing so hard when I saw this happen

That E3 trailer kinda got me pumped for some XCOM, so I'm going to give Long War (the shorter version of it) a go once in a while. Was there ever a way to invert the X axis camera rotation? Edit any config files? I can use DS4Windows to swap left and right on the dpad, but that also effects menus and selecting actions during combat.

There seems to be a bug in Gangplank though. By the time you reach the second power node (or whatever they're called), there will be a Cyberdisc dropped in near the first power node, already activated, and the game won't show you when it happens. I've had several occasions where suddenly a Cyberdisc appeared behind my back and flank killed my Gunner.
