Yooka-Laylee launches April 11th, considering Switch version instead of Wii U

They could still release the Wii U version and have 70% of the discussion around it be about whether this game running on last gen level hardware looks like a game running running on last gen hardware, or if it's really a Scorpio level game hindered by YouTube compression and poor contrast levels.

Like other developers they used a software hungry Wii U audience to fund their game for other platforms.

Could make people wonder if there was ever even a Wii U version running.

Yeah, they didn't really have much choice if they wanted to make the game and target the Nintendo audience, which is the largest audience for a game that's all about reviving the spirit of late 90's Rare.

Their hands were tied with Switch too - it's ridiculous that they can't confirm a Switch version literally, since they aren't technically allowed to do that yet.

So ... what happens to people who only have a WiiU and are not sure WHEN they will get a switch ?

You can switch your Kickstarter option to Xbox One, PS4 or PC right now or get a full refund.

Switch details are supposed to be coming soon, likely after the Switch reveal in mid January

This was one the games I was looking foward to play on my Wii U.

This sucks, but I can understand their reasons. If Nintendo is not doing anything for Wii U whay should any other company care ?

The next to be cancelled it bloodstained ritual of the night, sincie is a game for 2018 is a given.

Well the game was cancelled on Wii U for technical reasons, not because the platform is dead.

Did we even see any footage of the WIi U version??

Looks like digital pre-orders get the Toybox immediately. I just pre-ordered on Amazon and got nothing.

Both Xbox and PSN web stores list the Toybox as available.

Yeah I mentioned it earlier that none of the physical pre-orders on sites like Amazon detail anything about the Toy Box demo.

I just emailed Playtonic to see what is up for the Toy Box demo access for those pre-ordering physical copies off Amazon and the like.

Fairly lame the press release says the demo is for all pre-orders and then you go to the largest online shopping site to get nothing...

Cancelling the Wii U version seems reasonable but it's still weird considering it was the base version... And man I feel bad for Wii U backers. I'm glad I got a PS4 since the KS happened lol.

I'll be there day 1 on PS4, but I'll double dip so bad for a Switch version. Then again I would with almost any game.

I honestly don't know why they ever said that since it was obviously being made on the PC.

The writing was on the wall from day 1 - it's a large scale Unity game. The chances of this running at a smooth frame-rate on Wii U was zero to nil. When announced, perhaps they were not yet fully aware of the issues it would present on the platform? Tough to say.

If a Wii U version was released, I doubt it would have been worth playing. Likely a very low, unstable frame-rate, lots of loading, hitching and skipping, etc. Would have been a technical mess.
Honestly the game doesn't look like something that the Wii U would fail to run. This isn't a game The Order 1886 levels of visual fidelity. And they could always tone things down and run it at sub HD to improve frame rate as needed. Most experienced devs will code their own optimisations even when working with third party engines. I think it has always been that way as Nintendo hardware tends to get poor support from third party engines.

I'm split, because Switch over WiiU version totally makes sense
but I'm not swimming in money right now and I'm not rushing to get a Switch for probably a good while after release, so it kinda sucks I'm gonna have to wait it out in that case

Technically WiiU could run such a game easily, if it was made with a proper engine are programmed for WiiU specifically, but the YookeLaylee developer uses Unity, an engine that performs relatively poorly on all platforms.

In the other hand, many Unity problems are CPU related, so the Switch version could perform better than even the XOne/PS4 version, regarding the rumor that Switch has better CPU than both competitors.

I am really excited for this. Great price point. Hope this turns into a franchise and gives us another set of awesome characters in the platformer genre

I am immensely amused this is coming out before Hat in Time.

Not like I care, I'm not angry or throwing my fist to the sky, I just find it funny.

Is the pre-order bonus just the regular toybox demo or the expanded "plus" version?

In case anyone else was curious, the game's Steam page is now up (no pre-order options just yet) and has the answer:

Pre-order today to gain INSTANT access to the unique Toybox gameplay experience!

This is why I backed it for the Steam copy. I had zero faith in them (or anyone) putting their games out on a Nintendo platform anymore. They love to get those nintendo faithful (who are often starved for games) to build up support for their game/kickstarter... then as soon as they can they drop support to focus on PS/PS/PC. Cant blame them it makes business sense... but it still leaves a bad taste in ones mouth.

Oh well I hope the Switch Version is great and hope those who really wanted it on WiiU find solace in the switch version... I probably wouldn't, but I am a bitter old man.

On a side note: Game is looking fantastic. Probably my most anticipated game of 2017.

Gotcha.

Does anyone know if there's a way to change our Backer status from one console to another? I want to switch from PS4 to Steam digitally (it already gave me toybox codes for Steam) and then grab the PS4 version off the PSN store.

Edit: This reddit post seems to indicate they can make the change if you contact them via email - https://www.reddit.com/r/YookaLaylee/comments/4mf54t/is_it_possible_to_change_platforms_still/ - has anyone had any luck doing this?

It's not about the visuals, per se. I think it's the fact that it IS a Unity game, and one of a larger scale, that is the issue (or at least a good part of it).

Banned
I guess this can't be classified as a bootleg Banjo but it's funny that it will look like it to those somewhat out of the loop. Yooka looks creepy but Laylee is nice

Any chance it launches on April 11 on Switch and they just can't announce it until the Switch event?
Considering they're "working closely with Nintendo" yet still commented they were only at the "looking into it" stage basically confirms to me they're gonna be a thing in January.

I'm not seeing what looks so bad about the level or trailer. It looks just like any Banjo level, just with a theme we haven't seen before. Maybe the aesthetics of casinos just lend to it looking more fake and garish for a lot of people.
