1. Police Story(1985)
2. Goodfellas(1990)
3. Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory(1971)
4. Yojimbo(1961)
5. The Warriors(1979)
6. Halloween(1978)
7. Patton(1970)
8. First Blood(1982)
9. Hard Boiled(1992)
10. The China Syndrome(1979)

I tried to keep it as varied as I could as the OP did say 'favorite movies' and the idea of finding objective 'best' movies are hard for me to come because different movies do different things better than others. Some are expertly acted, expertly written and some are just beautiful or are so bare-bones that I can enjoy its shallowness at the right time. I've certainly seen more movies with more 'artistic merit' than some of these, but something about these ten were the ones I could come to without feeling too bad about my choices.

For my own reference I rate things on a 5 star scale and I allow myself 10 5 star movies total. After that its:
4 stars - a classic, can be watched multiple times and is still great.
3 stars - good to see once and never again.
2 stars - skippable, but if seen its good a few good parts, few good ideas, but dont go out of your way to see it. (aka every Marvel movie)
1 star - a total piece of shit.
0 stars - a movie that actually makes you angry someone spent money to get it made.

I am massively underqualified to vote on this, so I'm tossing votes to four movies that had a profound effect on me.

1) Jurassic Park
2) Her
3) Princess Mononoke
4) Beauty and the Beast (1991)

Reasoning:
-Jurassic Park is still the best blockbuster ever made. It's eminently quotable and breathtaking, even 20 years later.
-Her was an exploration of long-distance relationships with a sci-fi wrapper, and it ended up being a very personal movie for me as a result.
-Mononoke and Beauty and the Beast are the magnum opuses of the two greatest animation studios of all-time.

I've seen a lot of the movies that are being commonly named, and even find many of them good or noteworthy, but I only really care about these enough to vote on them.

If you guys are interested, we could do what the Anime Top List threads do and include user comments regarding the film in question? At least for the Top 10 or so.

Honorable mentions:

Toy Story nearly made it

The first 40 minutes of Wall-E are magic, but I can't justify the full movie on my list.

Kieslowski's Three Colors series

Linklater's Before series

Can we change our lists before a certain deadline?

I think I watched Citizen Kane, Psycho, Ran, and those other old classics too much in film school for them to stick with me. They are historically interesting and contemporary filmmaking owes them a great deal, but they don't come to mind when I imagine my favorite movies.

My list is not in any order. Just 10 movies I really like. Like others have said this could easily extend to 50.

1. Blade Runner
2. Alien
3. Empire Strikes Back
4. Aliens
5. Star Wars "A New Hope"
6. Terminator 2
7. Se7en
8. Beauty and the Beast (Disney)
9. Top Gun
10. Dangerous Liaisons

My 1-5 has been this way for a decade or so. My 6-10 changes all the time.

This is hard! It's sort of a fight between what you liked the most and what the general consensus is. Anyway, here's an attempt:

1. Taxi Driver
2. Stalker
3. Bicycle thieves
4. In the mood for love
5. Once upon the time in the west
6. Breathless (A bout de souffle)
7. Apocalypse Now
8. Pulp Fiction

I'm not very happy about ranking influencing the voting, but eh.

There's 14 films out of the 1800+ i've rated on IMDB that have scored 10's. I picked 10 of them and put them in an the order i want them to influence the voting.

Generally speaking, my 10's are movies i've seen a fair number of times and still find them very enjoyable upon repeat viewings. Something i've seen once and enjoyed very much usually gets an 8, or in certain cases, a 9. This is the reason the newest film on this list 5 years old - a lot of more recent things i just haven't seen often enough yet. A similar problem arises for films that were made before 1980; i only started trawling through older stuff in college and although i have enjoyed many of the classics i've watched, there are very few that i've seen 3 or more times.

1. Un prophète [2009]
2. Heat [1995]
3. Dazed and Confused [1993]
4. The Longest Day [1962]
5. Michael Clayton [2007]
6. The Breakfast Club [1985]
7. Le fabuleux destin d'Amélie Poulain AKA Amélie [2001]
8. Pulp Fiction [1994]
9. Inception [2010]
10. Citizen Kane [1941]

8. Boogie Nights (1997)
9. 12 Angry Men (1957)
10. Blade Runner (1982)

A top 25 list would be easier. Already second guessing my choices.

This was hella tough. I made a shortlist with 68 films, then I narrowed that down to 37 films, then started putting films by the same director (or from the same studio in Pixar's case) together and choosing just one from each as well as trimming a bit more which gave me a final shortlist of 18. From there each film had almost nothing on the one that it eliminated, but I tried to not pick two films for the same reason, so if I liked one film for its dark lighting in particular then another great film I love for its lighting would be eliminated. Basically just to make it easier to choose, as well as maybe giving me a more varied list. Anyway:

1. City of God

2. Hero

3. Apocalypse Now

4. Inglorious Basterds

5. Psycho

6. Spirited Away

7. Wall-E

8. Hot Fuzz

9. Shawshank Redemption

10. The Raid

Is this the kind of thread for long explanations of why we chose what we did? Or more of just a list thread. Don't wanna write essays unnecessarily.
