RED DEAD REDEMPTION came out five years ago. I still think about it.

Was getting caught part of your plan?
I never put much effort into the horse choices, were they really any better ones, think I stuck with the horse I broke early on when they taught you how to catch them first time.

Not really. Hell in my latest playthrough, I too just stuck with the horse Bonnie gave me during that mission you talked about.

Funny thing was I ended up getting a bit emotionally attached to it when I played it like that.

Remember those random moments that happen while out and about, women in distress, I'll sort this. She stole my horse, can't believe you fell for it, rage increases, pulls out whip, noooo, pulls out gun....she rides clear over the hill, no shot. God damn it.

same! i mean, what the hell - at that point, i just had to! for me, that horse was right up there with agro & epona :) ...

amazing game. can't play gta, no interest in max payne or bully, hated l.a. noire. but rdr? pure magic...

Definitely one of the most overrated games ever in my book. It's good, but man do I not understand the intensity of batshit craziness that follows this game. I think the phenomenal story gets people to overlook the game's flaws, such as bad shooting and empty environments.

What was wrong with the shooting?

The environments weren't empty, they were as spacious as the genre demands. Some of my favourite moments were trotting/galloping across the wilderness, taking in the scenery porn. Plus, it was never long before an optional random encounter occurred.

The entire Mexico chapter was also the biggest blow to the game's pacing, with it being inconsequencial filler.

No way. I loved Mexico. Best music and some of the best missions. Attacking the fort was the nuts.

Also, if you're going to homage the 3 main eras of Western cinema (New Austin = Classic, West Elizabeth = Revisionist), how can you leave out the Spaghetti Westerns?

I don't think about it. It's one of the few Rockstar games that didn't grab me at all. I completed the story and was completely unmoved by my experience.

Reading through this thread, it's like I played a different game entirely. I do credit RDR with making GTA V more lively and spontaneous, though. That's one aspect of RDR I really enjoyed if I had to pick one.

I beat the game but to be honest I found it quite boring. I really enjoyed the story but there were some slow parts in the game that made it difficult to finish. Unfortunately those parts are what you remember the most rather than the enjoyable parts.

I have to echo what many people have stated in this thread, RDR was probably the best game last gen and one of the best of all time. As I said in another thread I would love to see a prequel:
JoJo UK said:
I would like to see a RDR prequel (not revolver) showing John Martson coming to realize he needs to get out of the gang he has been running with. I don't want to play has his son again, maybe if they get a new voice actor... like just get the dude who played John back.
It should be called Red Dead Renegade, ie John 'betrays' the gang is has been running with.

Immediately reloaded my save one time when it got stolen too LOL

did the same, & more than once...

thing is, there was nothing going on that particularly encouraged me to form that bond, it all sorta just happened that way. which i think says something for just how immersive i found playing rdr to be. i usually wince whenever the term 'immersive' is used, but damn if rdr wasn't just that - in spades...

As far as I'm concerned, this is the greatest game of the last generation. Not my favorite, mind (it's in third place behind Oblivion and New Vegas), but far and away the best. Apart from falling into some of Rockstar's usual narrative traps, I find it hard to fault anything it does. The atmosphere, worldbuilding, side content, detail, sense of closure and interaction is spot-fucking-on.

As for the next game, while I don't really trust Rockstar to pull off the narrative in a particularly nuanced and sensitive fashion, I think a Django Unchained-style tale set in the slavery-era Deep South would be an awesome way to differentiate itself from the typical Old West setting and distance itself from RDR.
