Better than last few months, at least.

I thought you didn't count books less than 200 pages? Or was that 100 pages? o.0
From the OP:
What counts as a book? Resident bookworm Mumei says a book is longer than 100 pages. But really, it's up to you.
Now, some people are counting things like comics and manga, and I personally wouldn't do that, but for books it's definitely around 100.

Updated original post.

I didn't ride the bus at all last month so I've not been reading as much. And the Audible app has been shit for awhile now so it's hit or miss as to whether I can listen to a book.

The Mulan movie is pretty good, but there were some problems between the subtitles and the dub where I wasn't sure what was actually supposed to be going on in the scene. You'd think the same person would be responsible for the translation?

Updating for May.
Completely slacking off on the reading, and at least part of the blame falls on my stupid decision to listen to the recommendation of a work colleague and read John Dies at the End.
I figured comedy sci-fi would be a good change of pace, and I kind of needed one, so I listened to them. I was wrong. More than that, I realised that if I had a physical copy of the book I'd have lobbed it across the room and refused to retrieve it. I'd continue, but then I'd have to
pause for a moment to talk about my penis
. I've accepted at this point that it's just not my kind of book and the humour is not the kind of humour I find funny... but it feels like if I give up I'm letting it win. Then again, I guess it already has, because it's killed my desire to read anything else either. And I haven't. For an entire month.
I really need to finish this thing. And then never listen to that particular work colleague's recommendations again.

January Update
February Update
March Update
April Update

Strangely slow month, but what I did manage to get through was largely satisfying. Highlights were my first Agatha Christie novel, which really opened my eyes to the sheer number of works that have derived parts of their plot from her work.

Monster, Mad Max, and Paris Is Burning were all utterly fab.

bit of a slow month yet again but really picked up steam a bit towards the end so this month might be better

Halfway there on books. I've read some great stuff this year, and some not so great. Recently, though, Desperation and The Regulators were very interesting books and I can't see reading one without the other. Desperation, while technically better in both setting and characters, was not as cohesive as The Regulators, I feel. Either way, good books and a good start to my reading King's work.

On the movie side of things, I just barely wrapped up Kill Bill: Vol. 1 and was blown away by how good it was. What a silly, dramatic, goofy, exciting, tense, crazy, violent, cartoonish, serious, disturbing movie. I'll watch Vol. 2 ASAP.

Vol. 2 drops off somewhat Cade. In my opinion. Which is a shame really. Still, I'd say it is worth watching for completion's sake.

Gaddis's "The Recognitions" is pretty good, you guys/als. Might take me more time than Against the Day and Infinite Jest to finish, though.

24 hours to post your update. Turns out halfway point is in a few weeks.
I'll just compile a list, rather than doing anything fancy.
Good luck guys & Gals.

I've slowed down a lot in reading. Started but failed to finish a bunch of poorly written stuff.

Actually completed Dracula. I always had the impression that Dracula set the stage for vampire lore, but the author keeps claiming the lore has been around for centuries. Huh.

Watched Big Hero 6, enjoyed it. San Frantokyo looks like a cool place to live.

Quick update for me:

3/50 books | 69/50 movies

Again, I've blown the movie section out of the water. I'm proud of myself for actually getting some novels knocked out. I'm not aiming for 50, just 12. Currently I'm half way through Anna Karenina.

The Old Man and the Sea is typically considered a full length novel and I would be surprised if it's over 100 pages in most printings. That's the first thing that comes to mind to me.

Mumei probably doesn't think it is fit for purpose for this challenge rather than it being a novel per say. Though that particular book may be an exception.
But I don't honestly know. I have no need for honour so I care not for anything remotely close to pride. :p
To be fair, my shortest books aren't my quickest reads. Agatha Christie is a breeze no matter the length for example. Whilst something like The Road, with all the supplementary reading one does and notes one makes takes longer.
Mumei appears to be the type to read War and Peace for this kind of challenge. Ahem. ;)

It's just a personal standard for what should count rather than an attempt to define the minimum length for everyone. Same thing with not counting graphic novels (either series or individual trades).

Update: Apt101 - 10/50 books | 14/50 films

It's funny, in previous years I read a ton more and definitely watched more films. I start participating in this thread and have almost stopped. Did manage to finish several books all around the same time and banged out a few films in a week.

No worries. Just post something like Apt101 above, and you're good.

Edit: to be absolutely clear: make new update posts with links to your master post.

I had a ton of free time yesterday, so I painstakingly added up everyone's book totals, even including the wayward people who haven't posted updates in months. It's possible that I'm off by a few, so I'd say this is right within +/- 10.

I'm not sure how this compares to last year's thread at the 1/2 mark, but it looks impressive to me.

Thanks. I caught his post just now and was getting ready to link that. Good thing I kept scrolling down. :)

To be fair, we had waaaaay more active members posting in last year's thread. Ashes' update shows 35 people. I was tracking 200+ for most of the year. Admittedly, almost half of those only had 2-3 movies on their list.

In the past, were reminders sent out at all in the first month? Because when I was adding up the numbers, I could see a ton of people who just said "I'm in!" then updated for like a week or two and evidently forgot to came back. Maybe that can be caught and pushed back against next year.

Reminders, as in PMs? Or in thread updates? I always gave a 12 to 24 hour notification in the thread that I would be updating it for the month. There's just a ton of natural attrition and I didn't have the heart to cut people from my tracker once it was put together. You never know when someone will come back for one massive update at the end of the year.

May update!

Books:

  • J.R.R. Tolkien and Christopher Tolkien (ed.) - The War of the Jewels: The History of Middle-earth - Volume XI (1994)
  • Michael Crichton - Jurassic Park (1990)

  • Brandon Sanderson - Perfect State (2015)

Films:

  • Kingsman: The Secret Service - Matthew Vaughn (2014)
  • Seventh Son - Sergei Bodrov (2014)
  • The Grand Budapest Hotel - Wes Anderson (2014)
  • The Librarian: The Curse of the Judas Chalice - Jonathan Frakes (2008)
  • The Road to Eternity - Mike L. Mitchell (2015)
  • Toki o kakeru shôjo (The Girl Who Leapt Through Time) - Mamoru Hosoda (2006)
  • Tropa de Elite (Elite Squad) - José Padilha (2007)

Work and exams made this a terrible month, and now The Witcher 3 is taking up most of my reading time.

'As I lay dying' is good. Not great yet. A shame that I am rushing through it. Oh well.

This was linked on the show notes for episode 175 of BOTNS, and you might get something out of it.

Be Patient
Think of a Faulkner text as a suspense or mystery story—but with you the reader (instead of a character) as the detective. Or think of the text as the slow unfolding of a jury trial with yourself as a juror, sitting in court listening to and sifting through the varying and sometimes contradictory testimonies of a parade of witnesses, and knowing that finally you'll have to make up your own mind about what actually happened and who is and is not telling the truth. Be willing to suspend the need for instant gratification; learn to appreciate and enjoy delayed revelations and a gradual unfolding of plot, characterization and theme.

Or, better, think of Faulkner's novels as symphonic in structure. And just as a symphony moves from section to section, presenting varying moods and impressions, altering speeds and rhythms, at times introducing leitmotifs [melodic phrases that are associated with an idea, person or situation] and themes that will be developed more fully later on, at other times looping backward to recapitulate earlier themes, but always advancing toward a final resolution, so too does the Faulkner novel employ shifting tones and impressions, hints and foreshadowings, repetitions and recapitulations, time shifts looping backward and forward, all consciously intended to shape the story not so much on the pages of the book but in the reader's mind and imagination.

Since, in many respects, Faulkner's stories are more about impressions than events or facts ("I don't care much for facts," he said), the way to read a Faulkner novel (at least the first time) is to immerse yourself in the rich and powerful language, lose yourself in its sounds and rhythms, delight in the detailed descriptions and the images, enjoy the voices of the characters—and wait, ignoring for the time being what happened before or what's going to happen next. Like an unfocused image on the screen, the Faulkner text typically appears all a blur for quite some time, but then Faulkner will begin gradually to turn the focus knob, bringing the story and its characters and meaning into sharper and sharper (though never absolute) focus.

I haven't read Faulkner, yet, so no idea how I'll take to this. But it sounds like good framing.

Thanks for counting those up, orthodoxy.

At that pace, 16 people are on pace for the books, and 17 people are on pace for the movies. Surprising that more people aren't on pace for the movies, since that's usually the easier of the two to get to!

Needs must. I already have the Sound and the Fury bought, and thought I'd be reading one right after the other, fully expecting this to be a home run, since I was acquainted with some of the more astoundingly beautiful prose already, such as the description of rainfall in one particular scene, but they come from characters- no I'll not deminish the novel anymore - except to say, it is what it is.

I found The Sound and the Fury exceedingly confusing.

I had to read the forward to understand that
it switches narrators without indicating it does.
In having a narrator
with mental deficiency
, I thought it did a much poorer job of making me care about any of the characters than Flowers For Algernon did. The vague reference to the Macbeth line was the only thing I took away from it in the end.

Here's my master list, Ashes.

I'm currently reading three different books at once. It looks like I'll finish one by next week, going by the pace I ate at it during my bus ride today. The two larger novels are a bit more of a gamble, but since I'm no longer addicted to Friday Night Lights, I have a shot!

I have been finally watching the Before X trilogy. I have Before Midnight left, but Before Sunrise, and Before Sunset are bloody brilliant.

Woo! 50 books complete! Now I just need to start watching movies... we will see if that happens...

What I do find somewhat interesting is that the best book that I have read in the last few months has been a Harry Potter fan fiction. It was absolutely fantastic, but it just seems wrong.

Update: Apt101 - 10/50 books | 18/50 films

Banged out four more films. Thief didn't age well, not Mann's best work. Rosewater was better than expected. Christian Bale didn't seem to have a good handle on his character in Rescue Dawn (bizarre take on a Vietnam war era American). Jurassic World was a lot of fun and filled me with nostalgia.

Working on two long books, probably won't be able to add to my tally for a few weeks in that department.
