Manga News/Discussion |OTD| Oh, you're reading manga? How cute...

I don't know if it was discussed here, but one guy on the VIZ forum gave a cool theory on how Marie and Taiga switch place in Hungry Marie.

The "Hungry" in Hungry Marie is representing the plot element that when someone offers Taiga sweets (chocolate, cake, candy, etc.) his mind swaps with Marie. Remember when Marie was introduced in the first pages of chapter one, remember how she was listing off dessert items. I guess she is always hungry for sweets and that hunger causes their minds and bodies to swap. Myth Busted.

Pretty cool if this is it. I never thought of it.

I keep getting so confused in Hungry Marie when Beelzebub look a likes show up (especially male best friend and the priest). Either the writer cant make different character designs for beans or this has to be intentional

Newsflash: almost literally every mangaka/anime studio has sameface.

Food Wars

I can't tell if this series is getting the axe or if just this arc has been given the "too unpopular punt to the next story arc" because we've skipped pretty quickly from a multi stage test to confronting the council of 10 and central in the finals without any extended training scenes.
Neither of those things are likely happening. Training arcs in a cooking manga are dumb. In fact, training arcs in general are exceptionally common and expected in shonen, but are almost always dumb wastes of time. Usually a shonen training arc involves the protaganist trying to achieve some specific power, e.g. Gohan is going to learn Super Saiyan, Naruto is going to learn Sage Mode or Fox Mode, or Ichigo is going to learn Bankai, or Negi is going to learn Magia Erebea, etc. etc. ad nauseum. That doesn't make any sense in Shokugeki; the only people with "powers" are people who are born with them (which off the top of my head are Erina's Divine Tongue, Hayama's Perfect Aroma, and Edgelord's perfect heating sense.")

Practically every example of a shonen training arc involves Character learns Power X and then uses Power X but then pushes Power X in the fight beyond what he demonstrated in the training ("I'm gonna extend the Kaio-ken to TEN TIMES", "I'm going to learn to gather Natural Energy without the frogs and throw the Rasenshuriken!" "I'm going to outlast my limit on the Visored mask!" "I'm going to use Magia Erebea too much!"). That doesn't make much sense in a cooking manga where you have no idea what the themes even are until they show up to the cooking battle. The only point of mentioning the training arc is to provide opportunities for flashbacks and let you handwave away rapid increases in skill (which are meaningless anyways since all of the dishes look pretty equivalently good and are simply explained to be superior or inferior by whoever judges it).

It's not necessarily a matter of punting to a new arc for external reasons; this has already been a very long arc and by the time they end the Regiment it will almost assuredly be longer than the Autumn Classic was. From a narrative perspective, the biggest reason I have no expectation this arc is going to end the series regardless of outcome is because its been readily apparent the purpose of the arc is providing character development for Erina (and her father), not for Soma. This becomes even more obvious in this chapter where Soma explicitly names Erina as their "captain" for the Regiment, and Erina is the person who has a specific character arc with Azami (and Joichirou's arc is pretty clearly tied to Azami's, and if Azami is defeated here, you probably need Joichirou around to do it since Azami's character arc directly relates to Joichirou).

Akira Amano at leasts makes her characters somewhat different, Ive only seen maybe one potential look alike.

elDLIVE 9 & 10

We got through season 2 fast, which basically brought us to the sixth or so anime episode.

Nothing much to say since the anime did a great job adapting, would almost suggest people to watch the anime over the manga, just to hear them say Yoyosa out loud, lol.

Food Wars is not getting axed, the volumes sell quite great (Currently 3rd best Jump seller not including HxH whenever it appears) and the volume sales have been generally stable. When/If the volume sales start to bleed like Bleach or Toriko did, then it will be time to worry about it. I mean yes the mangaka could decide just to end it long before the axe looms; but in recent Jump history the only mangaka who's done that was Yuusei Matsui, with both Neuro and AssClass.

Hungry Marie 2
This was interesting, and I want to know more about what will happen. The humour is one point those with how wacky the entire thing is.

Dr. Stone 1
I liked this. The girl's face is really creepy looking, but the art is good otherwise and I thought the story was interesting. I don't know what direction this will go in but I'd like to find out.

Demon Prince Poro 3
This was bad and generally unfunny. I have no idea where this will go, and it's just a bore to read overall.

Black Clover 100
Vanessa is going to get pretty powerful now I guess. That panel where Noelle gets chopped was a little shocking.

Where I'm at with the Jump Starts right now

U19 -> Dr. Stone + Hungry Marie -> We Never Learn (I generally liked all four of these) >>>>>>>>> Poro

Yuragi-sou no Yuuna San

I probably should have figured they were going to take that random chapter where the Raccoon Girl gave Yuuna a body and just completely negate the drawback of her being a spirit going forward.

Poro 3

The idea with the fiance was nice in theory, but badly executed.
I dunno, it's just not funny and feels confused about what it wants to be.
Just bad.

My personal ranking so far would be
Hungry Marie > Dr.Stone > U19 = We Never Learn >>>>>>>Poro
So far I wouldn't mind all of those first 4 staying, but that's not gonna happen, lol.

World's End Harem

Yes, this still going on.

So they switched from the One True Waifu MC to a secondary MC who wasn't told that he was sent to a school with gorgeous women who are there to have sex with him. At first, he's getting it on with a couple of women, but then he figured out what was up and now he's apparently turning into One True Waifu MC for his piano teacher.

I guess the mangaka thought the world needed a nudity and fanservice manga that sets out to prove men are sensitive romantics.

Touhou - Amanozako (SFW doujin)

Stay losing Seija. Please know that even if you win the next popularity poll, if you become the star of another official game, if you usurp Reimu as the face of Touhou and the entire world comes to love you, I will always hate you unconditionally. The slightly opaque translation aside, I enjoyed this variation on the ULiL rumour manifestation concept, as well as seeing the two trolls work their magic to varying degrees. Might've gotten more out of it if I'd read Forbidden Scrollery, which I've been meaning to do for years now. Looking forward to further Seija antics from the author at C92.

Monster Musume 51
Lala literally saved this chapter. And Suu gets the spotlight next? The way is going to be rough
This, this and this. It's a shame that Kyurii (and Kino to a lesser extent) had to be sullied by their association with Papi.

Should be fourth since HeroAca surpassed it in 2016 yearlies.

Again I say: man I really hope Hungry Marie makes it through both into US Jump and in the more general sense of not meeting an early end. It's just really, really working for me.

Also, Dr. Stone is... interesting. Going to have to see a bit more before I figure if that's in a good or a bad way, at least for my tastes.

I'd say it and We Never Learn are a lock to be picked up by Viz, it's really a question of Dr Stone vs U19 for the 3rd and if we get a 4th.

unless they drop the ball, Dr. Stone and Hungry Marie will be picked up, and We Never Learn seems inoffensive enough to fill the Nisekoi niche. So it's gonna be those three.

Alright, I think I'm gonna read Tokyo Ghoul again and use that as a precursor to jumping into Re and trying to not drop that this time. Maybe it'll help me stick with it a bit because I fucking loved Tokyo Ghoul and Re was such a ball drop for me so maybe I can wade into the depths again

Cross and Crime - Reactions

So I read about the first 25 chapters of this magna years ago and dropped the toxic a hit.

Tonight I happened to get linked to a discussion about the series ending and HOLY SHIT!

The FMC ends up with the man who has her gang raped and repeatedly rapes her. She picked this over her then boyfriend who loved her
.

The sick part is there's a vocal fan base who love this ending. I have no words.

Nothing surprising about that ending as it is a NTR story. I think that story also had some reboot or something?

When you say reboot, what do you mean? Like the author scrapped storyline without ending the magna like some alternate universe kinda thing?

If its anything close to that vain, how would an editor even allow that sort of thing?

Edit: the manga seemed to have gone over 100 chapters.

I mean, Cross and Crime is a reboot of sorts of an earlier manga of that author, Sex Crime (went to check on MU to ge tthe title), which was 3 volumes long (and outright porn) vs Cross and Crime 12 volumes long and softcore porn, visually (same theme though).

Ha! Oh wow... so the contents of cross and crime are the tame versions. Author is sick confirmed. I guess it takes a special type of fetish to even to begin drawing some sort of line between what happens between FMC and her attacker to love.

Yesterday's reads :

Bokutachi wa Benkyou ga Dekinai 5
Really weak. Anecdotal, not on par with the series former quality level (whatever it is).

Poro no Ryuugaku-ki 2-3
Chapter 2 was relatively mediocre but I liked chapter 3. Maybe my comedy standards are low but the girlfriend thing was (relatively) funny.

U19 3
Disappointment. I don't know, it felt like it was dragging a little. Nothing much to note here. Maybe I really liked the girlfriend in the former chapters and she has no real screentime here. An uninteresting chapter necessary for the storyline ? Probable.

Dungeon Meshi 1-7
I'm really not into food manga (just tried Toriko some months ago). I don't know, so much focus on it feels unhealthy in a way. But at the same time when it is funny, it IS funny. The only thing that made me laugh out loud for several minutes yesterdays. Marcilla is golden and Marcilla + Mandragora + Giant Bat is...
Can't wait for the next LOL if it is representative of what is to come. The manga now seems to delve deeper into each party member and it was seriously needed.
Nice.

Ao no Exorcist 1-2
I have strangely no real feeling toward this, maybe I just can't stand the main protags or shonen like this bore me.

Yakusoku no Neverland 1-2
Ok. The hype was justified. It was solid as fuck. I have my doubts about the setting's interest in the long run, but for the time being it's top notch.

Black Clover 1-2
Fuck that, I didn't know this manga, at least the MC and his motivation, was a reskin of Naruto. Good God, it was painful to read after Neverland.

Ippo 1160-current

The coach is the real villain f the story here. If your boxer's life/health is in question, make him stop. More Miyata vs Ippo build-up zzzzzzzzzzz.
I don't like him that much but sad to see Itagaki reduced to a jobber 2 panel fight.

Would anyone recommend A Silent Voice? Thinking of just blind buying that based off the movie trailer

Yeeeeeeeeeeeeees. It's so god damn good, even if I think the ending is, while good, hair-tearingly frustrating in a lot of ways. Still a great read regardless.

Koe no Katachi is very good but also very flawed. What's there is excellent, but it suffers from dropping like every plot thread and making sure almost nothing it brings up is resolved. It's irritating in that manner, but it's still very good.

Don't.
I mean, there were a few cool chapters a couple of weeks back, but that doesn't excuse the shitshow the roughly 90% of the rest are.
How I long for the simpler days of Tokyo Ghoul.

Hayate No Gotoku 562

At least Hina gets some final spotlight.
Still, the whole romance and drama plot points feel rather forced and fall flat completely.

I consider it a masterpiece. Subjective opinion aside, it's really great.
