2017 Backlog Blitz - We may stumble and fall but shall rise again

April Update:

This was mostly a Dark Souls month, but I did start to check out some shorter indie stuff over the weekend as a necessary palette-cleanser. I've done a decent amount of backlog stuff so far this year, now I'm going to start focusing on newer games for a bit.

I ended up buying a lot more than expected, with a Steam Sale, and two bundles that I wanted. Also, Persona 5 wrecked most progress I had for pretty much the middle of the month--but I took a bit of a break from that the last week or so and knocked out a good amount of shorter games I was in the middle of. I wanted to beat two more games before the end of the month, but I REALLY suck at Puyo Puyo Tetris and I'm still too lazy to just play Alan Wake's American Nightmare. Someday, I guess, lol

For May I have two for sure purchases I'm making: Yoshi's Wooly World (which I used Amazon credit to buy and is in route now) and Fire Emblem Echoes. I don't expect anything else, but I also have a growing wishlist of games that I'm waiting to go on sale, so we'll see what happens :p

Ended with a -1 in April, which is fine considering the last part of it went to hell with my dad having a second massive stroke. All games got put on hold since I had to fly 2500 miles on super short notice.

I did bring BotW and PPT on my Switch but we've been so busy and I've been so exhausted. I haven't had the chance to play anything but a few story rounds of Puyo.

I'll be here until the 16th and then have to go back home and move provinces (which thankfully my rockstar husband is mostly handling in my absence), so I have a feeling May is gonna be mostly bunk. We'll see.

April update

Going back up a bit this month, at least. Still far from the +3/month target that I was aiming for. Zelda is just taking forever, and I have the whole of Horizon to play after that. I'll try to play a few shorter games at the same time, I guess -- and speaking of, yeah, I totally only played the 30-minute length of Proteus just to reach +3 this month.

Games acquired: -1

  1. Shovel Knight: Specter of Torment (PC)

Finished in April
Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater HD (PS3) - 1/4

Total Score: +20

Not much to write about this month. I spent most of it on the GT Sport Beta and Disgaea 3, which I've almost finished nearly 7 years after I'd started it.

Lately I've mostly been playing card games. I try to make time for Persona 5 every once in a while.

Added the following games to the backlog (-8):
• Persona 5 (PS4)
• Drawn to Death (PS4)†
• Lovers in a Dangerous Spacetime (PS4)†
• 10 Second Ninja X (PS4)†
• Curses 'N Chaos (PS4)†
• Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom (PS3)†
• Alien Rage (PS3)†
• Hoplite (iOS)

Completed (+5):
• Card Crawl (iOS) - It's more like Patience than Magic, and I got bored with it fairly quickly.
• Downwell (PC) - Really fun, but I'm never going to reach the end. I decided I was done with it without having reached the end.
• Disc Jam (PS4) - A fun modern take on Pong. Great for co-op.
• The Elder Scrolls: Legends (iOS)
• Hoplite (iOS) - A great little strategy puzzle game similar to 868-HACK.

Removed (+4):
• Invizimals: The Lost Kingdom
• Alien Rage
• 10 Second Ninja X
• Severed - Fun for a while, but I've had my fill.

* - free
† - "free" from Playstation Plus

Currently playing
• Magic Duels (iOS) - Bought all the cards from the new expansion and trying out new deck ideas.
• The Elder Scrolls: Legends (PC/iOS) - I've completed the main campaign and now I'm slowly collecting enough gold to buy the second chapter of the expansion.
• Persona 5 (PS4) - Loving it so far. It's May and I've reached the end of the second palace.

God of War III Remastered (PS4)
Metal Gear Solid V: Ground Zeroes (PS4)

Quit: 1
God of War III (PS3)

Total for the month: +3
Total for the year: +12

Managed to at least clear out a few shorter games in April. Nothing terribly noteworthy except my surprise at liking MGSV so much. I went straight to Phantom Pain after it but have had to put that on hold until we're properly installed in our new home.

Currently a bit torn on how to count GoW3 for PS3. I didn't like the Remastered version very much, so I realized I'd never go back to the inferior version. On the one hand I've seen what the PS3 game has to offer but in higher resolution, but on the other hand I haven't actually played that copy that's sitting in a box somewhere still unopened - and it'd boost my score somewhat undeservedly. How do the rest of you count stuff like that?

I would just ditch the PS3 version from the backlog without any score adjustment, as you seem to have done. It doesn't really make sense to count beating a single game as +2 just because you own two versions, I think.

Aaaaand that's basically the end of May. Great month for me, playing portable games on my commute has really paid off far more than I thought it would in getting through my backlog. Bastion, God of War (Vita), Quell Memento and FEZ (which I'm starting in a day or two) have been on my backlog for years and years, so I'm really happy to finally get to them.

Next month won't be anywhere near as good. I'm only planning on picking up Tekken 7 and maybe the Crash Trilogy but Yakuza 0 will probably take me all month to finish, so it balances out. I guess my portable games may make things look a bit better though.

Here is my update for May. I didn't make much progress in completing games, but I did abandon another 7 games and didn't make any purchases, so my backlog shrank.

My Backlog (43)

Existing score: +4

Bought (0)

Completed (+1)
Shantae: Half Genie Hero

Abandoned
To The Moon - Played about 10 minutes and realized I wouldn't like it. Read the plot on Wikipedia and watched the ending on YouTube. It's a touching story but I would not have had the patience to play through it.
Beseige - Will be fun to tinker with but I have no desire to play through the "campaign".
Wolfenstein: The Old Blood - Played the first 20 minutes. I loved TNO but the engine hasn't aged very well and the first part of The Old Blood was just boring.
Valdis Story: Abyssal City - Didn't really click with me during the first 15-20 mins.
Darksiders II - I'd love to play this at some point but I know I'll never get around to it, especially when games like Breath of the Wild exist now.
Pikmin 3 - I know I'll never make time for it.
The Order: 1886 - The generic gameplay can't make up for the great graphics.

Currently Playing
Nier: Automata (30 hours) - This is my main focus right now. I've finished the first two endings and am working on the rest.
Bayonetta 2 (3 hours)
Forza Horizon 3 (~10 hours. At this point I've decided to just finish the Blizzard Mountain expansion and maybe the Hot Wheels expansion and consider the game "beaten". )
Yakuza 0 (2 hours)
Persona 5 (1 hour)

Current total for the year: +5

Yay! More games finished last month!

Main OP

Keeping this short and sweet this month, but basically, more games finished and less games bought compared to last month! Hooray! Now to decide whether I keep my Wipeout pre-order or not as I've met my quota of bought games released in 2017 for the first half of the year and then if not, hopefully only have ARMS be my only purchase for the month, having been completely swayed by the punchtest.

Paper Mario: Color Splash - I actually watched my bf play a fair amount of this game, and the battle system seemed super tedious and not worth suffering through for the writing. Seems like the perfect game to read a Let's Play of :p
Donkey Kong Country: Tropical Freeze - Donkey Kong games have never really been my thing. I got this for free from Club Nintendo so I decided to give it a try. Still not my thing.
Pikmin 3 - This game stresses me out. With time limits and just plan sucking at controlling Pikmin, I feel that I need to have perfect days and keep repeating them... it's frustrating and not fun for me.

May 2017 (06/04/17): Belated update on last month. I had an extended vacation period that momentarily tempered my desire to pursue any lengthy projects, but I was able to push forward with a few short games that covered my 'three games beaten' goal. Looking back over my recent purchases, I'm somewhat surprised by the amount of stuff that I've slightly nullified from my backlog. It's a new approach that I've adopted toward titles that aren't immediate priorities, but it does help place put my re-purchases and impulse grabs in a new light that I'll continue to monitor down the line.

I've been doing really good lately. I finished Furi, The Fall, RoTR, playing Just Cause 3 and just downloaded Invisible Inc to play alongside it cause I need to take a break from the explosionfests.

Most of my backlog consists of PS+ games and short games I picked up cheap. The Division and Until Dawn are the only AAA titles left after JC3.

I've been really good at resisting sales for the most part this year.

I really like JC3. Playing on PS4Pro. The frame rate dips a bit at times but it's never unplayable. I really enjoy using the tethers, that's a really fun mechanic with lots of potential for creative use. Even when I'm not being creative it's fun cruising around ripping stuff to the ground and seeing it explode. And the explosions are magnificent.

It does seem to suffer a bit from too much to do syndrome and I could see myself getting bored before the I finish but it's a lot of fun for now.

Whoops, haven't posted in months. I haven't played too many games so I'll put them all in one post

BEATEN
  1. Pokemon Sun (Jan, ~51hr)
Mainline Pokemon is always awesome to me. Loved the new region, Pokemon variants & the trials. Little bit too much handholding & wasn't a fan of Lily
  2. Dungeon Siege 3 (Feb, ~16hr)
Enjoyed it but it felt way too short even with the DLC - really felt like there was a chapter missing. Combat is fun enough & it does seem like a lot of the dialogue & some story beats will change depending on who you play as which is cool, definitely cosidering replaying it at some point
  3. Demon's Souls (Feb, ~72hr)
My favourite Souls game so far. Been attempting to beat it for years now but usually never even got halfway. Love the atmosphere, combat, enemy & environment variety
  4. Dark Souls (March, ~86hr)
Also been attempting to beat this one for years. Didn't enjoy it as much as Demon's Souls, certain areas felt like a bit of a chore & I was overall relieved to be finished rather than the accomplished feeling I got from Demon's (might have been a little burnt out though). It's still a great game & the DLC area is particularly well done
  5. Mass Effect Andromeda (April, ~90hr)
Absolutely LOVED this. It's probably in my top 10 favourite games ever. Not sure what to say really - the issues it has that bothered people really didn't bother me enough to detract much from the experience. I loved the characters, story & new galaxy and felt the feeling of exploration was awesome. I'd rank it only slightly lower than the first 3 ME games. Seriously bummed the series is on hiatus :(
  6. Bound By Flame (May, ~18hr)
Way better than I was expecting. I can enjoy pretty mediocre wrpgs so I thought I'd give it a try and damn it I'd say it's not mediocre at all - it's good. Yeah it's pretty short, linear & small in scale but I loved it's sense of humour and the combat was really satisfying once you got to grips with it - difficult enough that you have to constantly be paying attention but not so difficult that I got frustrated (on normal or 'Hawk' difficulty anyway, higher would prob drive me insane). Also it felt like a complete story to me - sure I would have liked it to be a bit longer but it didn't feel like it was missing a piece of the story like Dungeon Siege 3 did. Quite possibly my second favourite 'AA' rpg atm
  7. Tomb Raider Definitive Edition (June, ~17hr)
I'd only ever played one Tomb Raider game back on PS2 & I don't think I played it much. Still I was pretty confident I'd like this - I really like the Uncharted series and the Tomb Raider & Indiana Jones movies but I was surprised by just how much I liked it. Really dug pretty much everything about it, especially Lara as a character. Now I'm itching to play Rise of the Tomb Raider
BOUGHT
  1. Valkyrie Profile: Lenneth (Feb)
  2. Brutal Legend (Feb)
  3. Ratchet & Clank Quest For Booty (Feb)
  4. Hotel Dusk (Feb)
  5. Mass Effect Andromeda (March)
  6. Yooka Laylee (May)
Total Score: +1
Remaining backlog: 48

I've written a few games off of my backlog in this time, either because I tried them and couldn't get in to them or I've come to accept that I cba to ever return to them.

I've been playing Lego Harry Potter Collection & Yooka Laylee in short bursts and enjoying them a lot but not really sure when I'll finish them. I've still not decided what 'main' game to tackle next - tbh I really want to buy Rise of the Tomb Raider but it's taken me so long to get a positive score... :p

Also, not adding it to my score but I played & finished A Dark Room a month or two ago. I became slightly obsessed with it and played pretty much non-stop for a whole day aha. I knew nothing about it beforehand so my perception of what the game was about really shifted as it progressed which was a cool experience.

June seems like a good time to update with an all new post.
As of 6/28, I set up an account on Backloggery: http://backloggery.com/applesaucejaxon
Putting it all into a database, and I kind of feel like crap about it now. That's a lot of money that I probably shouldn't have spent. I've only within the last year stopped buying games on release day, so I paid full price for a lot of them. Makes my stomach hurt. And I know there are probably a lot more that I don't remember that should be added to the list. Probably PS4 games mostly. Argh...

So now that my backlog is only 2 games, I'm basically going to be posting monthly just to keep track of my spending/playing habits so they don't spiral out of control.

Which is insane considering how much time I put into P3 and P4, but maybe I just need to revisit it in the future. Probably also doesn't help I got spoiled either. :/

Ill add myself to this thread I suppose. It goes nicely with the 52 games in a year one.

http://www.backloggery.com/CurrY

I have games on there that I probably have beaten in the past but I haven't been keeping track properly until fairly recently so ill just start out with a massive backlog.
Also with some games I have a console version and a Steam version, should I add both versions as beaten on here? Because that's what I do on backloggery usually.

Ill make a main post this weekend.

June Update:

Finally had some time to really sit down and play some games this month. Now, time to start tackling the trio of big PS4 games that came out earlier in the year (which I bought while I was too busy playing Zelda...)

It's the end of June, so it's time for my Q2 Backlog Report.

I don't know why Excel insisted on making the line two colors when I saved as a picture, but that's Excel for you.

While the first quarter started with high marks and great progress made, the second quarter shows me being a little... less than fantastic, with net negatives for every month. Ah, much like my school career. I'm still in the positive in the year at +4, but that's not a big buffer for my backlog progress lol.

Granted, last year June was also the month I lost a large amount of progress due to only beating one game but buying/receiving 15 or so, so this is about par for the course.

However, despite the bad numbers, there's two pieces of good news that the numbers don't really show:

First is that I've been far more aggressive about removing games from my backlog. I'm doing a lot better about detecting which games I flat out don't want to ever play and games I don't like, and just don't waste my time with them. There's a few exceptions of course, with like review games needing to be played and some titles only taking a few hours to beat so I might as well get it over with, but overall it's getting a lot better. I know my PS4 collection is starting to get a little out of hand, but I'll eventually get around to figuring out what I want to keep there, as well.

Second is the type of games that I have been beating. This quarter saw me beat down some beasts of RPGs and get them out of the backlog--Persona 5 being the biggest offender. It's something I hope to continue into Q3 as I continue my Summer Gaming Challenge.

So, what's in store for Q3? Well, I recently had an automobile emergency that sort of drained my funds for... like... the entire summer, so with my budget in crisis mode I won't be buying many games unless I see them on a really good sale (as in, $20 or under for most full price games). I still cleared out enough funds in my budget for Splatoon 2, and I'm buying the Sonic Mania collector's edition as a gift to someone, but other than that for July and August I have zero planned game purchases, and the sale line is quite strict in this case.

In other words, I'm hoping to focus on a bunch of RPGs and my latest Steam purchases and beat a bunch of games while I'm more or less unable to buy anything. And play a lot of Splatoon, of course. It's looking like it'll be a good quarter for this backlog!

I'll update with a separate July month post when I need to. For now just have this barf of words, everyone. :)

Despite having spent most of the month playing Yakuza 0, I surprisingly managed to have a good month. FEZ had been on my backlog for over three years, so it was great wiping that off the list. While I also managed to buy and then finish Tekken 7 and King's Quest.

Next month I'd like to get my current two games and at least one more done before digging into FFXII HD.

I had to give up. I had no idea how many games I bought until I took an honest shot at this this year. It's been more of an awakening that I should really reevaluate my spending. I'm super thankful I did it though and next year I'll do it again with a bit more control.

Q2 summary time! Gosh, I didn't choose a good day for those Steam sale purchases yesterday! ;) It's gonna look sorta bad this month with a +-0, but I've only bought games I aim to finish within max a couple of weeks. So July will look a bit better. I do have a couple of more games in my cart tho, longer and maybe not as easy to beat soon. Still debating that purchase. But it's going sorta well these last years so I think I can splurge a tiny bit, no?

I'm buying way more than the last couple of years. And sorta playing less maybe. Q1 score is kinda bad. The Q2 score would have been amazing without the Steam Sale purchases. Didn't buy anything until this last week! But +26 for the quarter still isn't bad, so I'm not declaring this year a failure just yet! ;)

My biggest problem right now is that my remaining backlog is growing even without purchases. I have apparently been super sloppy while adding things so things I decide to play are missing on backloggery, and I have changed my mind on deleted games and put them back in. I don't wanna count these as +1s because I have owned them all for years and years. Some are even from my childhood. But it feels bad to never see that unfinished game number go down when I beat game after game. Gah.

I have changed a lot of my goals for the year. I wasn't having much fun with the retro stuff and needed something completely different. After playing my new games from the sale I'm gonna dig into some AAA games from last gen.

I have been finishing some games, but PSN sales have been the death of me.

In the black at last, and it's all thanks to Gamestop's 70-per. trade-in promo. I purged quite a few games from my backlog, stuff I knew I'd never get around to playing. Now let's see if I can actually finish some games this month. I'm about half way through Persona 5 but keep getting my ass kicked in Kaneshiro's palace. And I'm about halfway through Ys VII, which is a pleasant game to play on weeknights.

Here is my update for June. Still not much progress in completing games, but I did abandon a lot more games that I had in my backlog.

My Backlog (26) (Down from 43 last month!)

Existing score: +5

Bought (-2)
House of the Dying Sun
Ratchet and Clank

Completed (+2)
Nier: Automata
The Stanley Parable

Abandoned - I gave most of these at least 20 - 30 minutes of time before deciding not to continue.

GTA V (PC) - I beat this when it first released and just can't get into it again with so many other games available.
The Witness - I played for a couple of hours. The game is intriguing but I do not have the drive to finish it.
Undertale - Just didn't hook me.
Catherine
Ikaruga
Ys Origin
Ys: The Oath in Felghana
Splinter Cell: Blacklist - Played the first couple of missions. Tried to do co-op with a buddy and couldn't connect ( thanks uPlay). Decided to just abandon it.
Bayonetta 2 - Played the first 4 or 5 stages and enjoyed what I played, but lost the drive to continue.
Furi - Too tedious
Super Metroid
Metal Gear Rising: Revengence
DmC
Dustforce
Pillars of Eternity
Door Kickers
Shadowrun:Hong Kong

Currently Playing
Yakuza 0 (4 hours)
Forza Horizon 3 (~10 hours. At this point I've decided to just finish the Blizzard Mountain expansion and maybe the Hot Wheels expansion and consider the game "beaten". )

Current total for the year: +5

June update

Not bad this month. Of course, I had hoped to get around this score every month this year, and there's no way that's going to happen now. Maybe I can try to equalize my score from last year, though. I'm finally done with Zelda, at least.

Games acquired: 0

Games completed: +3

  1. The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (Switch)
  2. Anodyne (PC)
  3. Faxanadu (NES)

January total: +5
February total: 0
March total: -2
April total: +3
May total: +1
June total: +3

2017 running total: +10

Alright, so I'm usually the game buyer in my relationship. There are some rare occasions when my SO wants a game that we don't already own, but it's either something I would have bought either way (so I get it as planned and put it in my backlog) or something I have zero interest in (so I ignore that it exists)... with one exception - Summer Sales.
So during the Steam sale and with the new Humble sale he has built up a cart of about 20 games that he will buy tomorrow or whatevs, and they are all interesting! D:

So now to my big dilemma. What do I do with this? I could just add them all since I plan on playing them (yay family sharing), but it would be such a hit to my progress to get an unplanned -20 like that.
What I guess I could do instead is to ignore that they exist until I play them, and add them as I go. But would that be fair? Ugh, I dunno.

In other news, my own recent purchases can't be installed because I have filled up my two SSDs with MMOs (active ones), modded games (that I don't want to mess with) and big titles I have not finished. Oops. I guess I need to go back and finish a couple of road blocks. Heh. July will just be a complete loss with the new purchases and me playing The Witcher 2 all month. Great!

When my SO buys something I actually expect to play, I add it. If he buys something (or I buy something for him) I have no interest in playing, I never add it to my backlog in the first place. If I didn't have an interest then suddenly got an interest, it'll be added then. :p Of course, I buy the vaaaaast majority of the games and our tastes rarely even overlap, so I don't have much of a problem with something like this. I think the only time this is going to become odd is with Sonic Mania, and I just might buy my own copy of it anyway.

I mean that would suck for the backlog, but be honest with yourself! ;D But I'd really just take a good look at the games your SO is buying. Are they on your personal wishlist, like you wee going to buy it anyway? Are you ever going to actually play them? If yes to both, then add them. Otherwise, I'd leave it off. I mean, you can always remove the games later if you don't like them :)

Also don't you have like an insanely high blitz number anyway ;p

I'd do a mix of both. Sort them into two groups: games you definitely want to play and the rest. Add the the ones you definitely want to play to your backlog and ignore the others until you play them.
