2017 Backlog Blitz - We may stumble and fall but shall rise again

Alright, so I'm usually the game buyer in my relationship. There are some rare occasions when my SO wants a game that we don't already own, but it's either something I would have bought either way (so I get it as planned and put it in my backlog) or something I have zero interest in (so I ignore that it exists)... with one exception - Summer Sales.
So during the Steam sale and with the new Humble sale he has built up a cart of about 20 games that he will buy tomorrow or whatevs, and they are all interesting! D:

So now to my big dilemma. What do I do with this? I could just add them all since I plan on playing them (yay family sharing), but it would be such a hit to my progress to get an unplanned -20 like that.
What I guess I could do instead is to ignore that they exist until I play them, and add them as I go. But would that be fair? Ugh, I dunno.

In other news, my own recent purchases can't be installed because I have filled up my two SSDs with MMOs (active ones), modded games (that I don't want to mess with) and big titles I have not finished. Oops. I guess I need to go back and finish a couple of road blocks. Heh. July will just be a complete loss with the new purchases and me playing The Witcher 2 all month. Great!

I wouldn't count them until you start to play them. It wasn't your choice to buy them, it shouldn't count against your progress.

I mean that would suck for the backlog, but be honest with yourself! ;D But I'd really just take a good look at the games your SO is buying. Are they on your personal wishlist, like you wee going to buy it anyway? Are you ever going to actually play them? If yes to both, then add them. Otherwise, I'd leave it off. I mean, you can always remove the games later if you don't like them :)

I'd do a mix of both. Sort them into two groups: games you definitely want to play and the rest. Add the the ones you definitely want to play to your backlog and ignore the others until you play them.

I wouldn't count them until you start to play them. It wasn't your choice to buy them, it shouldn't count against your progress.

Thanks everyone! Glad to hear your opinions!

I will go the route of adding the most interesting ones. Which will probably be just shy of 20 titles anyway (plus my own couple of stragglers from the sale...). Most of them were not on my radar but as he showed them to me I was like "oh I would probably have bought/wishlisted that if I knew it existed". Some were on my wishlist already. As gaiages said I need to be honest with this and it is a bunch of games I want to play and will play so I might as well add them now and get it over with. (Eek!)
At least many of them seem sorta small/short so I think I can +-0 some of them soonish. Just gotta get done with The Witcher 2 and stuff. :)

When my SO buys something I actually expect to play, I add it. If he buys something (or I buy something for him) I have no interest in playing, I never add it to my backlog in the first place. If I didn't have an interest then suddenly got an interest, it'll be added then. :p Of course, I buy the vaaaaast majority of the games and our tastes rarely even overlap, so I don't have much of a problem with something like this. I think the only time this is going to become odd is with Sonic Mania, and I just might buy my own copy of it anyway.

Also don't you have like an insanely high blitz number anyway ;p

We're kinda alike then! I buy farming sims and racing games as gifts because that's his big must play genres that I usually don't touch. I can enjoy a racing game or two but not the way he does it. In the sales he usually just buys a bunch of tower defense games or hard 2D platformers that I don't enjoy, with a couple of roguelikes or other interesting game thrown in the pot. So from his sales purchases I often just add one game or two to the backlog. He usually leaves the overlapping genres to me so I can sort out the "best games" and then he'll just play my "curated" list ;D
This year it was basically only the type of games we both enjoy and he found them via the discovery queue. He knows I already bought what I wanted to (and it was mostly interactive stories that he doesn't play) so he wants this bunch. And now I want them too! Whyyyy...

No my number is not as high as I want it to be therefore it is not high! ;D

JULY UPDATE

Beaten:
  • Rise of the Tomb Raider (~22hrs)
Loved it, though overall I'd say I prefer the first game which had better pacing & characters - this one does have the better gameplay though. The Baba Yaga DLC was great, still need to play the Croft Manor DLC
  • Telltale's Game of Thrones (~12hrs)
Liked this quite a bit. Imo it was really cool playing out the story of a relatively small house whilst the actual events from the books/show played out in the background, it gave a new perspective & felt pretty personal. I grew to like all of the playable characters and it seemed like there were some decisions you made that actually mattered (though a lot of the choices were typical telltale fair)
  • Until Dawn (~9hrs)
Just finished this tonight, played it in 2 sittings. I really really liked it and will be toying around with it some more to see some of the different outcomes - might even platinum it. I'd love to see more games with this degree of flexibility, choice & consequence. Playing blind I managed to get almost everyone out alive
    RIP Matt
which I'm happy with. Seriously suggest avoiding any guides or spoilers for this game if you're thinking of playing it
  • Alice Madness Returns (~17hrs)
This game man. It's damn impressive really, the art design & sound really sets up the unsettling atmosphere perfectly. The game starts off kinda twisted and just gets darker & darker - but not in a glorifying or trivializing way. I genuinely felt nauseous during Chapter
5 - the painfully obvious child theme, the dolls, the sections that wrap around on themselves & disoriented me, that simple repetitive music...
Gameplay itself was enjoyable aside from a few frustrating segments, combat could get pretty darn frantic but I liked having to think on my feet and really mix up what weapons I was using on the fly. It sure is a weird one. I absolutely love the style of this game, including the sections/enemies that were quite frankly disturbing
  • South Park Stick of Truth (13.5hr)
Great game - totally nails South Park. I dug the battle system and was pleasantly surprised at the amount of variety in weapons, armour & cosmetics. Unfortunately I played the EU version which has several removed scenes, whilst I did appreciate the messages put in their place you definitely wanna get the US version if you can.
Bought:

  • Until Dawn (+)
  • Final Fantasy XII: The Zodiac Age
I had intended on buying both of the PSplus games at some point so I'm counting them as 'bought'

Over the Hills and Far Away - that was interesting insight into American British war in the 1800s and Indians in a very short visual novel form
Sakura Beach - so bad that it reads like a self parody so bussiness as usual with that series
Mushihimesama - really nice SHMUP but I don't have patience to master it so I'm happy with playing through it several times.
Fault - milestone two - a pity I had to buy this in humble bundle since it never went to below 50% discount but still great read :)
A wild catgirl appears - probably the worst visual novel I've ever seen I guess they make most bussiness from selling steam cards.

I bought a few games during the Steam summer sale, but I already finished some of them and I expect to finish them all before the end of the year, so my backlog won't grow. I was careful to buy only games I intended to play before the winter sale, and in genres that I didn't have a huge backlog already. The only exception is Tides of Numenera, but it is a short RPG and kind of different from the other RPGs on my backlog.

Whew, July was a huge month for tackling my backlog. I not only managed to finish four of the five new games I bought this month (one of which was FFXII TZA), I completed the Deus Ex MD DLC I bought in June, and completed another four games that'd been in my backlog for a year or much longer. Playing handheld games during my commute continues to pay off. It's not a particularly long one but it adds up by the end of the week.

I managed to get my score into double digits but it'll probably take a bit of a dive next month, as I plan on buying quite a few games.

I've completely fallen of the wagon and ended up in a huge game buying spree. These past two months I picked up over 30 (physical) games. I really need to cut that shit out now. Too much money spend on games I won't be able to finish any time soon. Time to start chipping away at this giant list.

I'm in again for this year. I doubt I'll be able to stick with it, but I really want to make a dent in my ever growing backlog, as well as reduce the amount of money I spend on video games in 2017. I honestly have enough games to last me multiple year, and yet I keep on buying new games just to be a part of the conversation. I really want to limit my game purchases to 1 game a month. This thread should give me that extra incentive.

This has been me this month as well.

Main OP

This month, I bought a lot of games, more than I expected. Some were planned like FFXII and Splatoon 2, but otherwise, I bought a ton of stuff that I actually started thinking I may have an actual problem buying so many games but not playing them lately, though it didn't help that, one, Amazon had a price glitch of £45 PSN vouchers for £25 (I bought two for £50) last week and two, until last night and today at least, work has been in the way of playing games a lot. I've only had time for a few bits there and there, the closest to getting a considerable amount of time has been Splatoon 2.

Needless to say as a result, this month's total is not good. In fact, it's actually near the number I ended last year on. So I have to push really hard to start getting into the positive numbers by the end of the year. Therefore, I've decided I'm going to be working on my backlog for the rest of the year - not just games this year, but games from last year as well - and put a embargo on buying games in place for the rest of the year except for three games - Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, Life is Strange: Before the Storm and Destiny 2. Other than those three, that's it. If I clear a considerable amount of by the end of October, I might treat myself to either Wolfenstein, Mario or Assassin's Creed. If I get to double digits positive by then, maybe all three. We'll see.

I have to add a new rule to my blitz since I've started reviewing games again... I only add the game if I've either beaten it or have plans to beat it. Not every game I review is going to be a winner, lol... I implemented this rule last month when I had two review games I beat. It basically washes out to a 0, but I like cataloguing it :p

I'm at +3 for the year so far. I plan on beating a lot of games in August. Hopefully.

Shorter games this month after Yakuza 0. I doubt I'll be able to finish anything in August due to the summer holidays. This backlog really feels like it's never going to be decreased to a manageable level.

How is it? I bought it way back when it came out and never got around to playing it. But now that I've finished FFXII recently, I've been eyeing it again.
I absolutely hated it back then but honestly only played an hour or so of it. Now, I'm actually kind of loving it instead. The story so far has been pretty Vaan/Penelo-centered but I think some of the old crew are making appearances later on. The combat is a little easy early on, but it gets better, especially with some of the boss battles. The esper system is great so far and the gear situation is pretty cool too with a decent crafting system.

What I'm here for though, is the world of Ivalice, and does a satisfactory job with that. Man I love that world.

I'm not sure I'd suggest going straight to it from XII. That might have played a part in my dislike for it earlier (especially since XII is one of my all time favorite games).

Question about backloggery:
How do you treat games that you have abandoned on that site? I get it if I've had time to sell them, but before that? Null?

If a game is not in my backlog (or was in my backlog before I beat the game), it's not on my backloggery. It's a pretty simple rule I have. I don't add games like The Sims that doesn't have an ending and I swiftly remove games I have no interest in playing, because none of those are in my backlog.

If you treat backloggery more like a collection manager, then it makes sense to null them. You still have them but they are not part of the statistics.

I use the null category for games that I have stopped playing and that I don't intend to revisit.

I generally remove them from the backlog completely. But if you're trying to track your whole collection via Backloggery, null would probably be better.

If I have any null games left, they're probably games I liked that have no real ending.

I use Backloggery and HowLongtoBeat to keep track of my collection as much as a backlog. So whenever I have games that don't have endings, like Overwatch, I use null.

July update

Meh, again. I needed some new co-op games 'cause a friend was staying over for a few days, and I needed a new portable game because I did a lot of waiting in line at a film festival, so... end result: no progress.

I'm nearly done with a few games, and I have no purchases planned for August, so next month should be better. I actually "beat" Pushmo last night, but the bastard thing unlocked three bonus worlds afterwards.

July update. This is the first month I've made 0 progress, mainly due to getting into VR thanks to the Oculus price drop. I'm not going to track most VR games as I see VR as more of a side activity at this point.

My Backlog (26 - Even overall from last month due to me abandoning Ratchet and Clank)

Existing score: +5

Bought/Acquired (-3)
Hollow Knight
Superhot
Superhot VR

Completed (+2)
Superhot VR
Superhot
Forza Horizon 3

Abandoned
Ratchet and Clank (PS4) - I got this on sale for 8 bucks. I completed the first few levels and the game just doesn't seem very fun. For whatever reason the R&C series has never clicked with me.

Currently Playing
Yakuza 0 (10 hours) - I'm really beginning to get sucked into Yakuza 0.

Current total for the year: +4

My backlog took a hit this month when I picked up a Nintendo Switch and upgraded my gaming PC.

• That's You! (PS4)†
• Darkstalkers Resurrection (PS3)†
• Element4l (PSV)†
• Don't Die, Mr. Robot! (PS4)†
• 1-2-Switch (NSW)
• Arms (NSW)
• The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild (NSW)
• Just Dance: Disney Party 2 (Wii U)
• Jotun: Valhalla Edition (PC)*
• Total War: Warhammer (PC)
• Shadow Warrior: Special Edition (PC)*

Completed (+5):
• Fire Emblem Echoes: Shadows of Valentia (3DS) - Great remake of a game I thought I would never play. It is different enough from the modern Fire Emblem games to feel fresh.
• Don't Die, Mr. Robot! (PS4) - A basic twin stick shooter.
• Just Dance: Disney Party 2 (Wii U) - Plagued by awful volume settings that cannot be changed.
• 1-2-Switch (NSW) - A fun collection of tech demos that should have been included as a pack-in.
• Wolfenstein: The New Order (PC) - I can't wait to play the sequel!

Removed (+2):
• Darkstalkers Resurrection (PS3)
• Neon Chrome (PS4)

* - free
† - "free" from Playstation Plus

Currently playing
• Total War: Warhammer (PC) - Playing the campaign mode with the Dwarf faction, since it was recommended for beginners.

Idunwanna...
Okay. Deep breath.

Had to drop the score for June/Q2 by one point. The total here didn't add up with my Backloggery Memory Card and I realised I hadn't put Stardew Valley into the bought section. Ugh. Ohwell, fixed now.

Spent July playing loooong games with my brother who's been visiting us for over four weeks. We didn't beat a single one of them of course. Managed to get a little SP-time and play the last bit of Dark Souls 2 at least. Crammed both NG+ and NG++ into two hyper focused days and got my 100 % Dark Soul cheevo, finally! Also decided the best evaluation you can get in Stardew Valley was good enough for a while.
Super negative score but I've had lots and lots of fun. So it's fine!

I was planning on making August and September real backlog focused months to fix this... but there's the release of The Binding of Isaac on Switch (that I shouldn't buy but oh darn how it calls me...). And then there's the amazing looking Guild Wars 2 expansion. And people want me to get Monster Hunter to play with them. And I have to help my little brother move to my city...

Halp.

I didn't want to add any other long RPGs to my backlog but the DQ11 hype got me and I ended up selling off a few games and picking up DQ8 to help with the wait. I haven't played it before (I've only played and finished DQ 7 and 9 surprisingly) but I'm really excited to start it!

Damn seems like Backloggery fucked up and lost their amazon affiliate status and for some reason that fucked the whole site?

I just beat wolfenstein new order and was going to update my page.

WTF I hope I dont lose all my games on there.

They say they aren't in any immediate danger of shutting down and Amazon has apparently said they are looking to start fresh, going by BL's Twitter. So at least for the short-term, they're fine.

Splatoon 2 curbed my backlog progress by an entire month, not that I mind. Bailed on RE7 after escaping the main house. Can't say I like the direction it heads, but the first 4 hours are fantastic. Hoping to keep my purchases to a minimum during the remaining months, but I've already preordered Mario + Rabbids, Wolfenstein, and Samus Returns.

Well, so much for that "backlog month"! Currently in a real slump. Helped my brother move to my city and it's been hell. I have started many, many games but finished almost none of them. Decided to clean out my "Now Playing" on Backloggery because they were just making me feel bad. I'm just gonna put those games away now and play something completely different. Started both Diablo and Forbidden Siren today and that felt great. Not gonna have any goals for September tho because soon there will be more stuff to bring me away from playing games. Bleh.

A very late reply but thanks for the heads up. I guess it's a good idea to leave it for a few months then. I love Ivalice too, especially with familiar characters, so I do really want to knock it off my backlog eventually.

Last time, I had fallen into a back hole in regards to my numbers. This month, I made significant progress. And that was before I sold off my Xbox One and games!

Main OP

Lets rewind a bit before we get to that, though.

Last month when we left things, I was at a figure of -16. Things were looking desperate. And I had only planned two purchases for the month: Uncharted: The Lost Legacy and Life is Strange: Before the Storm.

By Monday, I had clawed my way from that -16 to a respectable -6, but the fact I managed to beat that many games to get it down to that number is a small achievement in itself!

On Tuesday, I traded in my Xbox One and games for it because I just wasn't using it as often as perhaps I should. Plus, I realised that lightning my backlog would do a lot to my mental health and the stigma that I feel the need to finish these games. A conversation with a friend helped me in this regard as well.

Overall, the pre-tradein meant I got it down to a figure I could fight back from. Post-tradein, I have not only bounced back into the positive, I have got into double figures! Not too bad. Plus, I have my budget set for the rest of the year in terms of releases!

Only purchase planned for September is Destiny 2, though I could pick up Hellblade if I chip away a bit more at my PS4 lot. Also I'm hoping to get a new PC sometime for September, so that backlog I've had sitting on Steam since my PC shat itself in early 2016 will hopefully be chipped away a tiny wee bit too.

August Backlog Total: 3-9=-6

Ugh, what the hell happened last month? Well, basically, I got a night job. And that kind of stopped 90% of my free game playing time. I still probably could have knocked out a few other games, but I also picked up some review games so that is unmarked progress, more or less (still debating on whether I'll be adding them to the backlog in September or not). That, coupled with Gamestop's trade credit promo had me buying far more games than I intended, and beating far less than expected. I'm now officially in the negative, at -3.

But, my finances are on super lockdown for the time being, so I don't plan on buying anything else, unless it's with the leftover trade credit I have or some kinda of price error (like Zero Time Dilemma was). Also I accidentally got the steelbook edition of Yakuza Kiwami when I wanted the normal edition so I haven't added that yet, since I'm unsure what I want to do with it.

Anyway.

August Update:

A little bit of everything this month. Finished Yakuza, did Thief II which was one of my backlog goals for this year, and tackled a lot of shorter/indie stuff since I have played mostly long games this year. Finished Splatoon 2's single-player campaign, so I'm considering it "beaten", but am still playing the multiplayer.

Another big month for me. I bought a few adventure games at the start of the month to mix things up between big RPGs (FFXII and KH) and finished them all fairly quickly. Goosebumps sucked, Late Shift was disappointing compared to The Bunker and Read Only Memories was really good on the first playthrough but not so much on the rest. Late Shift and Read Only Memories (as well as Psycho-Pass) really suffers from the tedium of playing through the entire game multiple times to get different endings, with no easy way to skip repetitive scenes.

Then I finally started Kingdom Hearts: Final Mix back up, after having started it three and a half years ago. Since it was the PS3 version I started back then, the trophy requirements were way harsher than the PS4 version's but I got there eventually.

Finally, I moved onto Uncharted: The Lost Legacy, which is amazing. Up there with Uncharted 2, if not better. FINALLY finished Psycho-Pass, after slowly making my way through it for the entire month. And I started and finished the first Life is Strange: Before the Storm episode last night, which was pretty good.

Next month will probably be a negative month for me because I'm waiting for my import copy of Yakuza Kiwami to arrive and that'll probably take most of my gaming time up. I bought it alongside The Silver Case, which didn't come out on the PS Store here, but I doubt I'll have the time to play it straight away. I was also thinking of buying Undertale on Vita and playing it during my commute, as I've been meaning to play it for a while.

Ended up with a -3 for August, but still ended up beating some of the longer games I had left so that's good! Continuing on with my 2017 marathon of Dragon Quest, I finished IV today and just started V! Trying to finish it and Rabbids before the 14th when Divinity Original Sin 2 launch hits and consumes my life and my backlog, lol
