Summer Goals! |OT| of Mastering Yourself

I'm seeing a lot of unrealistic weight loss goals.

Losing 1 - 2 lbs is the max you should be aiming for. It varies person to person, but more than this becomes unhealthy and stressful on the body.

Setting realistic goals is just as important as having specific goals.
I guess we'll have to do some checks as people post to make sure they aren't setting themselves up for failure. Good lookin out.

Yeah man. I really want to get warhawk so I can spend some time with my family when they come down for graduation. As it stands right now, I could probably get warhawk standards but I want to make sure that I can get them when the time comes.

Type of Goals: Fitness, self-improvement and learning to save.

Specific goals:
I want to not look super scrawny, gain some muscle. Feel healthier.

I want to acquire a basic grip of Japanese (Rosetta Stone, I hope it does something!), so I can actually begin to import Japanese games.

I also want to start learning to save money, so I can use the extra room at my house as a pure-entrainment center. Maybe increase my hours at my modeling gig ($20 a hour).

Finish some of my backlog; I've finished two games thus far (Radiant Historia and Portal 2).

Most importantly, figure out my god damn major! I am debating whether I should keep my two majors (communication and writing), or transfer to a state school and study Japanese. I am stuck debating my future life. It's a true pain!

And if I am able to, become a little more social and maybe get a girlfriend. But, that's not truly a priority, but it certainly would be nice!

Updates: Weekly

Written: I wrote it out in this thread.

Deadline: August 22nd (by the time I return from Japan).

Note: I'm not starting to study Japanese until Monday. I still need my brain to recover from last semester. I was told to work out every other day, I'm thinking of doing 30 mins cardio and 20-30 mins pumping iron. I don't usually work out, so I'm a little new at this. I think that's everything, I hope I can fulfill my goals this summer! Thanks for the thread! :-D

I wrote this in the writing thread, but I might as well paste it here...

First story:

1. "Signs and Symbols" by Vladimir Nabokov: First published in The New Yorker, this short story tells the sad tale of an elderly couple and their mentally ill son.

Well, Signs and Symbols was quite the trip. I took quite a few notes, but I don't really want to share all of that, (well I don't want to bore you actually), so here's a snippet:

I found the story fascinating. Not merely because of the plot but also by it's construction, by it's author, and by the mystery alluded to, towards the end. Take for example, the frequency of the paragraphs in the three sections (7,4,19) equating to the year it takes place, 1947.

Signs and Symbols, or Symbols and Signs, as the New Yorker would have it, has a second story (not secondary) within the main story, a concept that Nabokov alluded to in his famous letters to the editor regarding another story, “the Vane Sister”. The inner scheme as, he calls it, requires one to solve what the passive reader would probably ignore, e.g. the dialing codes, the cards, etc ; thereby alluding to a truth gotten by peeling the fruit. Which of course I'm not going to spoil for you here, but which you can read here.

As Dolinin concludes:

The elegant riddle in "Signs and Symbols" was composed for the sake of the narrative. Discovering and solving it does not undermine existing ethical, historicist and psychological interpretations but challenges stale clichés of reader-response criticism. Those who refuse to look for a hidden closure beneath the deceptive openness of "Signs and Symbols" are more guilty of a "referential mania" than their opponents because they, like the insane boy, believe that everything in the world created by Nabokov refers to them and they are free to project their own doubts, uncertainties, and fears upon it.

...

one down. 49 to go.

I switched up my workout yesterday and swam about 8 laps. HOLY SHIT! It took me a half hour and by the time I was done, I was so tired I could barely walk. I gotta new goal now. I wanna be able to do 2 laps without stopping. Right now I can do about 1 and a half. I got a lot of studying in yesterday, and replied to a bunch of jobs. Hopefully by the end of this month I'll be able to cross a good chunk of those things off my list

I also know a few professional models that will shoot with me fairly cheap for bigger projects. There's also a few parks and cool areas to visit around me I want to shoot for my nature stuff.

Man I didn't know it was gonna be that intense. I'm going to definitely incorporate it into my cardio routine from now on.

Well, I don't want to make an official entry here, since I won't be talking about this on GAF at all later, but: By the end of the summer, I'm going to write this one story I've been thinking about for the past year or so. Well, the first draft anyway. Yes, creative writing!

I'm gonna try to do some more studying after the game is over, and maybe do some weights if I'm feeling up to it tonight.

Is it okay for you to do weights and cardio on the same day? That's not gonna . . . kill you or anything, is it?

Master Milk said:

I usually do about 36 minutes of cardio a day. I consider it my warm up more than anything. I'm doing a lot of cardio since my main goal is to lose weight and shed inches. After I get to my ideal body fat %, I'll go harder on the weights to gain mass.

My routine now is:

Monday
36 minutes of interval cardio (treadmill)
1hr of chest/back
15 minute abs (didn't do it ;_;)

Tuesday
cardio
30 minutes of swimming (just started this, will increase time as I get better endurance)

Wednesday
cardio
1hr of shoulders/biceps/triceps
abs

Thursday
cardio
1hr of cavs/hamstrings/quads

Friday
cardio
swimming
abs

Saturday
Sober up from Friday and promise myself not to do drink again

Sunday
Watch porn, play video games, and get ready for the next week to do it all over again.

As i already posted, my main goals are putting on some muscle and achieving any kind of success with girls. Getting a nice tan is on the list too, but that shouldn't be too hard.
I will put together a workout regime soon, but for now i'm doing push-ups and sit-ups to achieve some kind of basic fitness. Will add some cardio shortly.
As for girls, i plan on massively doing online dating come July. It's a numbers game, right?
As a virgin who hasn't even had a proper date yet and kissed less than five girls, pretty much anything qualifies as a success in that department.
I don't even care for a girlfriend that much, the primary objective is proving to myself that i can attract girls because my ego sure needs a boost.

daily goals: follow workout regime, go outside shirtless for at least an hour for tanning
weekly goal: at least one date (on average, so i could have a week without a date and then two dates in the next week)

2. "A Good Man Is Hard to Find" by Flannery O’Connor: A manipulative grandmother is at the center of this tragic and shocking story about coming to terms with who you really are.

Text
wiki

Flannery O’Connor reading the story.

I wanted to find somebody from the 'South reading the text, so I can hear how it is meant to be read. Well would you believe it, I found Flannery O'Connor, the writer, reading in her native accent.

This is a fantastic short story; with shock, symbolism and an ending that will stay with you for a while. Having said that, I was must warn you that there are some racial slurs, specially, the use of N***, which woke me up so to speak. I should add that O'Connor when reading the words, she says coloureds.

It's a great example of a text that uses foreshadowing; with examples littered throughout. Again, if you read it without much interest, it would be a travel-text, with a sudden abrupt turn for the worse. And to be honest, I'm desensitized to the violence; but upon repeat reads, it's something I can tell you.

Like any O'Connor story, it is filled with religious overtones; from what I could make out, the story was a criticism of society, and it's materialistic ways. Further, there are suggestions that it is also a criticism of people who are Christian in name only, and being set in the bible belt, I think it also stresses one to think about belief and literary takes of the bible.

If you wanted further literary analysis, this page here, should help you a lot. There are lots of links on the internet to help you dissect the text if need be.

update: I've only had 3 cigarettes today. Went up to a pack day for finals week :( that always happens, except last semester, where I quit. I had weed though, so that was my reward at the end of the night. Cigs have a way of just jumping into your hand, unlike weed.
