How do you guys like living away from home?

Ugh. I can't stand it. And my program at university is five years. Going to go insane. My mom has always done everything for me and I miss her. :( I miss my big cozy comfy warm room as well. The rooms at residence are so small and the beds here suck.

Do you guys like living away from home (or if you live in your own home, away from your parents/siblings)?

Don't worry, I'll vouch for them.
Oh man.

How long have you been away from your folk's house? Seriously I am sure you will get over it and come to love it. I was out of the house as soon as I could and could never imagine going back to live with them.

And seriously, it is time to grow up and take care or yourself.

International student(now working) in us. Haven't been home in 6 years.....#sadness

EDIT: It gets easier buddy. As days, weeks, months go by. But don't forget to call you folks every once in a while!! Rule number 1. Two, keep intouch with close friends...it helps a bunch when you do. If not, you will wish you did. Rule number 3: Call your folks.

Is it your first time away from home? It can be tough at first, but stick it out, usually after a few weeks to few months you will be having a ball. Try to make some friends (if you haven't already) and go out and have some fun.

I've lived apart from my parents since I was 15, so it's pretty normal for me at the age of 30.

Time to man up and stop relying on your poor mom to do everything for you.

I don't mean to alarm you but you have dogs on your face
You'll get used to it. You can't put a price on total privacy and independence.

You're a freshman, I'm guessing? It's October, give it a little time.

Trust me, you'll get used to it. Not only that, you'll wonder how you ever managed to live with your folks without going insane.

Much, much easier living at home and much less costly. I have a lot more freedom on my own, but since I don't get paid very much, I have very little financial security.

You'll get over it in time. Everyone gets homesick when they first move away.

I miss being "home" sometimes, meaning I miss living in the city I grew up in, but I certainly love having my own place, but it's always nice to go home for christmas and to get spoiled for 2 weeks.

I'm across the country from them now, and I can manage. Would be nice to be closer but it was the right decision for me.

I haven't lived at home in a long time though, so I'm very much used to it.

Lot of freshmen dorms are basically jail cells. Get some friends, share an apartment next year. Or if you're rich, get your own apartment.

Otherwise, I'm not sure what to tell you. Man up.

Living at home sucks ass. I moved back home for one summer and it was torture.

You will get used to it after a while. Like the nervousness that comes with starting a new job, you will be over it after a month.

But until then, try to stay busy. After your classes are done for the day, spend 30-45 minutes at the gym, every day, go for a walk, every day, and then study/work on your h/w. I promise you'll feel better.

Oh, and don't let the people who hated living at home bother you. Lots of people don't jive with their parents/siblings enough to live under the same roof after a certain age.

I left home when I was 15 and never looked back. I have a good family that I'm close to, but self-sufficiency is great!

It's peaceful bliss. I had to leave a decade ago on account of the nearest university being 270km away and although I've moved back for stretches I don't miss it at all.

I have discovered that it kinda sucks living in a different state. Or at least a really far state.

Same state with a 3 hour buffer zone is just about perfect I've found.

Just started my fifth year of college. It is kinda tough at first and you may feel a little lost but give it time. It gets better and you will start to enjoy it. You will come to realize how much more freedom you have, but with that comes responsibility. I go home to visit every once in a while and am glad it's only for a visit. I much prefer to be out on my own.

Why not, if you don't mind my asking? 6 years is a long time.

My parents couldnt afford a ticket back home while i was in college since they had to cover tuition(Out-of-state tuition, accomodation bills are absurd). After we graduate, international students are given a year to work which you could lose if you went home and were denied a visa. Good thing, most of my family moved here over the past year so it worked out :) And thank goodness i can now afford my own ticket, so i'll be there in december!!! yay!

So much better being out of home. The feeling of independence is great, standing on your own two feet and making your own path.

Plus as you get older it's a bit lame to bring ladies home to your parents house...

When people say leaving home was like leaving a prison or something like that, those kinds of posts always baffle me. Did you all just hate your parents or something?

My parents are evangelical Republicans and I'm a socialist and everything was just fine at my house. No real restrictions, no curfews, total trust.

I know that feel bro, but it gets better.

First week or two is going to be an adjustment, but when you finish after five years, you'll laugh at yourself for even thinking this way.

It's mostly the first year or so that is hard. Important thing is to focus on finishing your course and getting a job. I've been away from my family for 6.5 years now, and live alone.

It's a sacrifice, and is worth it.

eh not really, couldnt afford a place alone being on disability, so figured what better room mate than my bro. Hes even certified to help with my care, so hes payed to help and hang out with me. We got a damn good thing going imo
Well that is totally a different situation than I thought it was. Glad you guys are having a good time.

I suppose that certain fundamental differences in philosophy wouldn't create a lot of friction, but some do. Like living with a hoarder or two. Or generally living with lazy, incompetent people who don't give a shit to so alarming a degree that the house has degraded to a state of embarrassing repair and cleanliness. When you find yourself the black sheep of the family in the sense that you're the only one who cares about having a nice place to live, then you have to get the FUCK out. I went through it for a time, and it fucking sucked. Getting out of there was the best thing that I ever did.

Not bitter, but fuck my dad's lifestyle.

It gets easier. My first few weeks after moving out were tough...I was definitely homesick. Now, I love where I'm at.

Getting a vehicle really did help though. I felt stranded without one. It also helps that I'm only a 10 minute drive away from home, so I can always go see the family if I want to.

Forced me to grow up a ton. Especially moving into an apartment and managing finances, bills, rent, etc.

Also made me appreciate my parents and family much, much more. Can't wait to spend a few months back at home, hopefully next fall...
