Week 12:
Games bought - 2
Games finished - 10
Backlog - right here.
Now playing - DmC, PROTOTYPE 2, NSMBWii, SMG2

Completed Radiant Historia (236/236, True End get) and Just Dance 4 Wii (every song played, Max Mojo) during this week. I've also picked up DmC and since then it's the only game I've been playing (currently on Mission 8). Also, managed to finish a game during the Global Game Jam this weekend, which means I've been pretty busy :)

I just bought Mark of the Ninja so I wouldn't break my no bundles rule.

Basically I'm now at the situation of having just bought Sleeping Dogs, without imagining Mark of the Ninja would've gone in such a ridiculous sale.

I'll juggle my time between those two right after I finish The Cave, which I imagine will be early this week.

Week 8 Summary: January 27th 2013

MY BACKLOGGERY

Completed games: 3 (well, "beaten" games, anyway)
Games started: 4
New games purchased: "2"
Total spent on games since 01/12/2012: £15.71

Now, I did actually "buy" two games this week; Picross-e2 and The Cave. The reason I've not added onto my spend total is because the first was bought with credit from a gift card a friend gave me at Eurogamer, and the second was bought with US PSN credit which has been on that account for a good year or so. So it's "technically" not money I've spent THIS year.

Anyway, onto progression:

I played through and completed the text-tastic Softporn Adventure this week, which pretty much is Leisure Suit Larry with less graphics and more drugs. The idea of text adventures intrigues me, but the imagination to visualise the rooms I'm in isn't there, so I found myself struggling with this. Maybe one day when I have less games to daunt me, I can put more time to text-based adventures.

I also "beat" both of the games I purchased this week; I finished my first playthrough of The Cave this evening, and I do intend to continue to replay it with the other characters, although it will very much be on the backburner compared to other games I'm playing. I had a good time with it, but found myself getting a bit frustrated and impatient towards the end, thus wanting to pace myself for subsequent playthroughs.

Picross-e2, on the other hand, I blasted through as I bought this on Thursday evening. I've completed everything I intend to on this title (Easy and Normal puzzles, as well as all of the puzzles from the new "Micross" mode). Solving Picross puzzles without being prompted where you're going wrong doesn't interest me, although having experienced this in Micross, I might be inclined to change my mind. Either way, the title is done for me and any further play will probably be something I do before bedtime.

Now, I mention I've started four games, but only named three. My brother managed to successfully change the battery in my Pokémon Crystal cartridge for me, so I have been playing on that a bit. I only played enough to get all of the starters on my cartridge (thankfully I didn't need another cartridge that had a permanently working save so just used my Gold version), and now will start aiming for badges. My intention is to try and create some teams so I can take a crack at the battles on Pokémon Stadium 2; whether this comes to fruition or not is another story entirely.

I, too, got the Amazon Microsoft bundle and redeemed the $5 credit I got.

I installed Trenched and Mark of the Ninja and will get to those tomorrow.

New games bought/gifted:

Beats Slider (PSM, Vita)
Playstation All Stars Battle Royale (Vita)

Games completed:

Beats Slider

Playing this game again:

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy (3DS)

Beats Slider is the second free PSM game from last week. PASBR is currently on sale through PSN (offer ends today or tomorrow). it normally costs 40-50 pounds, you can get it for 20 pounds for both the PS3 and Vita version. No way I'd miss on such an offer :3 I've started on the game and so far it seems to be good. I'll need to play more of it to get a better idea of the game.

TFF is a game that is already technically completed with series mode and getting credits, but this game has a lot of replay value with higher difficulty modes, things to collect, characters to level up etc. This is a game to come back to.

Beats Slider is completed with 15 puzzles and on gold. Samurai Beatdown is completed in master mode as well. And lastly, endings 5 and 6 have been achieved with Sumioni. Those three games are completed in all modes and things to collect. Even though it wasn't a must to do all of this, I simply wanted to because the games were fun and short.

Also a minor progress update on a game with no real ending: All missions have been cleared with Jetpack Joyride.

For reference, my Backloggery total has gone down considerably (by which I mean about twenty five games)... But that's because I went through and struck out all the duplicates I have on multiple systems. No point in completing the same game several times!

I finished the first Blackwell game, took about 2-3 hours. I actually liked this one a lot, will definitely keep playing the series! Also started LEGO Lord of the Rings with the gf. At first the sluggish and imprecise controls turned me off, but after a while we started enjoying the relaxed gameplay. I'm really disappointed that it's so self-serious though, I mean, it even has the dialogue straight from the movies! I was expecting more of a parody, but it's just straight LOTR with some visual gags thrown in.

Unfortunately the Blackwell series just goes downhill into Ghost Whisperer story quality from the second on. The first one is pretty cool, though.

I've bought The Cave, Mark of the Ninja and Sleepy Dogs recently. Beaten the first two: The Cave I've gotten at least one ending with each character, and Mark on the Ninja in just NG, but I'm gonna try NG+. Sleepy Dogs I'm mainly playing right now, but it's making my videocard make some very loud noises so I dunno...

I beat Quake II: The Reckoning last night. I had to cheat to get past the last level, but I did it.

I will start Lollipop Chainsaw tonight. I swear.

Now playing - LoZ: Phantom Hourglass, Rewrite, NSMBWii, SMG2

Beat DmC Devil May Cry (on Nephilim, might do it again on SoS) and completed PROTOTYPE 2 (every single collectible/unlock/whatever, finished on Hard) this week. Also managed to push SMG2 to the sixth World, which means I'll be finishing it soon; and get halfway through Phantom Hourglass.

Oh, and I'm playing Rewrite too, since the patch is out.

Week 9 Summary: February 3rd 2013

MY BACKLOGGERY

Completed games: 2 (1 complete, 1 beat)
Games started: 1
New games purchased: 0
Total spent on games since 01/12/2012: £15.71

Having finished Softporn Adventure last week, the only natural progression for me was to beat the VGA remake of Leisure Suit Larry in the Land of the Lounge Lizards, especially with the new remake upcoming. I love the remake although I still find the charm to be there in the original EGA version.

I've also beaten Sonic and All-Stars Racing Transformed, by which I mean I've seen the credits, but at 32% completion, I still have a way to go with this. I don't think I will ever get 100%, but there's still stuff I'm able to do. This game will just go on the back burner for now, though.

I've managed to progress some through Pokémon Crystal as well, having collected two badges. Unfortunately, Stadium 2 doesn't like my HDTV so that will have to wait until I can hook it up to the little old-school TV in the spare room.

I have started another game this week, too - this evening I managed to get to Vision 2-1 in Klonoa: Door to Phantomile, which I bought on the US PSN over a year ago and proceeded not to play (to the point that it's now on the EU PSN). In all fairness, the last 14 months or so have been manic for me. But what with another thread on GAF gathering people together to play this, I figured it's a good excuse to start!

Never knew a free playstation mobile game like Cubixx would be so annoying and would take up all time. It's one of those highscore games where you can't save and you need to survive with building up your lives. That wouldn't be much of a problem if the levels were infinite but according to the store's description, the game has 20 levels. The furthest I've reached was 16. It was one of those games that got so addictive and hard to put down while being nasty in higher levels, that I hate the game more than enjoying it. So many hours were wasted on a game that migh last an hour tops if you can save on it, it got unhealthy. I'm going to consider the game is done, I don't like when I can't beat a game of its kind or wasting time with no progress but I might return to it casually here and there.

That game halted all progress on other games but after quitting with it, I returned to Dragon Quest Monsters Joker 1. 19 hours progress went smoothly, sun and moon temple have been cleared. The game has good gameplay despite it not looking too pretty or lacking with other areas. It's one of those games where gameplay is carrying the game, especially if you like raising monsters and grinding.

I didn't buy a single game in 2012 and I most likely won't in 2013 either. No money, but plenty of backlog to work through.

So far four games have been bought this year and more will come on the vita with games like Dokuro. 3 of the four games bought were against the challenge but other than that, I'm barely keeping up with the challenge. I started stronger in November and December but not many games are being cleared while receiving new games in January and February, college taking up more time and the free games sony is giving, while they're nice, they make me feel worse about the challenge. Like barely having break to tackle the current backlog significantly.

I don't feel good about the current results and it doesn't look like it will be much be much better with the games that are going to be released in the future. As much as people moan about the lack of vita software, it sure as hell is keeping me very busy to remain up to date on it. Then there is 3ds software and PS3 RPGs that I'm trying to ignore :/

Got gifted Antichamber by a friend. Been playing that and also hooked up my SNES and started playing FF3, with Lufia to play right behind it.

So far:

-0 retail games
-few iOS games
-SSX from games on demand on my 360 because it was £8.99 or something cheap, bought but not had time to play, and most likely will not until after summer!

Good so far.

I'm still in this thing!

Games Beaten
Ace Combat Assault Horizon
I really, really liked this game. I have played every Ace Combat with the exception of 1 and 2 and this has become by far my favorite. The last "mainline" Ace Combat I played was 6 and that left me feeling very ambivalent about the series. I honestly felt like AC6 brought nothing new to the series and instead delivered a very "safe" game. There was the usual suspects as far as level design (a last ditch defense of your only remaining base, giant impractical superweapons, a beach landing level, etc., etc.) Overall, it felt like a "greatest hits" version of Ace Combat but it was also completely unmemorable for me. Not a bad game but nothing new.

Assault Horizon on the other hand was a welcome breath of fresh air. The inclusion of Dogfight Mode(DFM) and Airstrike Mode (ASM) really changed the feel of the game and the change really felt like it was for the better. DFM makes dogfights more interesting even when they become "turn and burn" situations and the inclusion of Counter DFM was great too! Sure, the game becomes a bit more "on rails" in those situations but it just feels really cool. ASM was great too especially in that one mission where
you're tasked with taking a B-1 Lancer or B-2 Spirit (!!!) on a nap-of-the-earth flight to destroy the ICBMs. After emerging from the radar coverage, it felt great to just open up your bomb bay doors and trash the place!

It also has an incredible soundtrack. Seriously, listen to this stuff:
Rebirth
White Devil
Inferno
Launch

...I think I'm going to make a LTTP thread for it. Such an amazing game!

Theatrhythm Final Fantasy
Rhythm game of the forever!

I'll keep this short (because I really want to make that LTTP thread!) but this is one of those rare games that really nails the perfect balance of difficulty levels and controls. Obviously, the music is ace too. Very well done!

I'm putting Lollipop Chainsaw on the back burner for now, because it's kinda embarrassing to play, and am going to start something else tonight. Maybe Doom 3 BFG Edition.

Doesn't look much of a productive week, does it? I blame Pokémon Crystal, of which I've clocked nearly 21 hours in and have just passed the third Gym.

But I have been making progress in other games, too! I've also reached Vision 6-1 in Klonoa: Door to Phantomile and am up to World 4-1 in Paper Mario: Sticker Star.

Hoping to beat Klonoa this week and at least further myself in the other two games, but will be replacing Klonoa with another game when I beat it, most likely, since Pokémon is really a "backburner" game (despite me playing it more than anything else!).

I've not yet failed, but where I got off to a great start, I've done virtually nothing in the last 6 weeks. The new year meant new budget to be spent, new goals to begin working towards, and other work-related tedium. I did purchase Ni No Kuni at launch and have been enjoying it. I reckon I'm about 75% through. I'm hoping that I'll get back on track now that things are slowing down. I still think I can be done with my backlog by June, at which point I'll have satisfied my interest in this venture.

The Steam Linux celebration sale has been the most tempting Steam sale so far. My desire to support the cause compels me to throw as much money as it as I can. Fortunately, I can't imagine Valve pulling out at this point, so it can wait a while. In the meantime, I'll play what games I can in my Linux installation.

Meh, I finally caved in after 2 months and split the Sly Collection on psn with a friend. I already beat the first boss in Sly 1 though and will definitely finish at least that one in the very near future.

Damn, not checked in here for a while. Received Halo 4 as a gift over xmas and beat it. Pretty fun ride in coop, I'm hopeful for the future 343 games. The only game I bought in the steam, sales was TR Anniversary. I'm sorta playing it off and on atm. Its okay, but I'm not really feeling it since I'm not too big on platforming and there's a lot here. I enjoyed TR Legend when I played it years ago but this one not so much. I may end up dropping it.

I also went and beat Blood Money that I've had for ages. Absolutely fantastic game, definitely worthy of the praise it gets. I tried playing some of PoP Sands of Time but I couldn't get used to the keyboard movement. Felt terribly clunky and I dropped it quickly. I might give it a go again some time in the future when I can be bothered to set up an xpadder profile for it, but not anytime soon.

Games bought: 2. One is within the exception of being a Mega Man game.

Mega Man 2 (3DS)
Anti-Chamber (PC)

Beat Mega Man 2 three times the day I purchased it
Almost done with Anti-Chamber

Beaten three other games, if you count unlocking a all the songs in a few Rhythm games "beating" them.

Finished Lord of the Rings with the GF, fun little game to play with someone who hates dying in games (you can't die in LEGO games). We also started Scribblenauts Unlimited for a bit, seems like it might get awfully repetitive after a while though. Might buy LEGO Star Wars the Complete Saga for us, although she has no interest in Star Wars and hasn't seen the movies. What say you, GAF?

As for myself, I beat Crysis as part of my "four in february" (which is looking to become "one in february" btw). Superb shooter that got very bad towards the end, culminating in a glitched final boss fight that left me unable to complete the game, so I watched the ending on Youtube.

I bought Brutal Legend, but I've already beaten it on 360 and it was mostly to support Double Fine.

Finally, I received Deponia as a prize from a GAF Steamgifts giveaway.

So in summary, still trucking along I guess :)

As promised, I've beaten Phantom Hourglass. It was a really fun Zelda game, utilizing every single feature of Nintendo DS. Right now I've went back to Skyward Sword (also amazing), played a bit of SSBB with friends and... well, that's it.

I have not posted since 11/12.

I have sold 90% of my games, excluding my favorites per console; the only game I have bought is Far Cry 3 pre-ordered, and played it every day until 100% completion.

Finally beat Klonoa: Door to Phantomile after some issues with the last couple of levels. Have passed the fourth Gym in Pokémon Crystal and have reached World 5-6 in Paper Mario: Sticker Star, so I hope to reach the ending by the end of this week.

I have picked up New Super Mario Bros U again, and have fully completed three worlds. I did cave last night and picked up the 3DS Virtual Console release of Mega Man 2 with the remainder of my gift card credit and also a little bit of money, the amount of which I forget, so I will update accordingly when I know. I have this game a couple of times and have beaten it on Normal mode already, but am replaying it now for the 60Hz experience.

Well, beaten all the games I had bought: The Cave, Mark of the Ninja and Sleepy Dogs.

I liked Mark of the Ninja a lot, I'll probably play it on hard later, maybe. The story is really bad, though, as it was on Shank, I really wish they would stop playing the "art style" card as narrative goes and would actually write a decent interesting story. What's great about MofN is the flow of movement and overall level design, it's very rewarding and dynamic and feels really refined, can't wait for the sequel.

The Cave was pretty good, though I feel it should've been better, for Ron's lifelong dream game. I liked the morality part of it, but playing the game like 10 times to get all the endings is just an exercise in frustration. I beat it thrice and I feel I did more than I should already.

I didn't like Sleepy Dogs nearly as much as I thought. Early on the combat was pretty cool, the car chases were infrequent and fun and the story had this grey morality that felt like it was going somewhere. Then they killed the one character that made the story interesting, gave you guns, gave you tons of shitty missions and it spiralled down very fast. I don't think I'll even beat the DLC.

I have Clash of Heroes still on the backburner, but to be honest, I doubt I'll ever beat it. I feel giving it 22 hours of my life was more than enough, so to me that's keeping my promise.

Managed to beat Paper Mario: Sticker Star earlier this week; I will sometime go back to complete all the little bits of after-story stuff. In return, I went back to the only 3DS game that I have not beaten, Kid Icarus: Uprising, and have nearly managed to reach the point at which I put the game down last year. I also did a 60Hz run-through of Mega Man 2 having downloaded it on 3DS Virtual Console.

I have beaten five Gyms in Pokémon Crystal, and am up to one of the very last worlds of New Super Mario Bros U, having blitzed through a lot of it this week. I have a bit of a "mental diary" of games I want to try and look at before my "big investment" of March, featuring Luigi's Mansion 2 and Lego City Undercover.

Aside from the 3DS I was doing pretty well. I'd have to consult my backlog spreadsheet but I have finished at least 10 games from the beginning of the Christmas Steam sale. And those few 3DS games I'm playing a lot. Although I'm out of the challenge, I've drastically changed my spending behaviours and stopped adding to my backlog just for the sake of it.

There'll have to be a consolation prize for those of us who almost made it. Maybe next year? :)

And yeah, the reason I don't feel bad about failing is because just like you, I've changed my habits dramatically. The challenge part is just for fun, the real goal is to stop destructive backlogging.
