"Vinnk's Village" Anecdotal Report

Here again is a report from my town.

This week I was asked to look for: Wii, DS lite, Harvest Moon Wii, RE4 and Ouendan 2. I went Thursday June 8th, 2007:

Jusco
Wii: 1
DS lite: 2
Harvest Moon: 2
RE4: 1
Ouendan 2: 2

Youme Town
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 3
Harvest Moon: 3
RE4: 2
Ouendan 2: 1

Ouendan 2: Sold out

Goody
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 2
Harvest Moon: none
RE4: 1
Ouendan 2: Never had it?

Best Denki
Wii: 1
DS lite: 1
Harvest Moon: 2
RE4: 3
Ouendan 2: 1

Wanpaku
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 5
Harvest Moon: 2
RE4: 2

Harvest Moon: 1
RE4: 1
Ouendan 2: Sold out

Yamada Denki
Wii: Sold out
DS lite: 3
Harvest Moon: 4
RE4: 3
Ouendan 2: 1

TOTALS:
Wii: 3
DS lite: 18
Harvest Moon: 17
RE4: 15
Ouendan 2: 6

NOTES:

1. Wii is still very supply constrained. Any store that does have them doesn’t have them for long.

2. DS lite is not hard to find this week. Most stores have them. This is the third week that I have seen the system readily available. The numbers are a bit lower than last week but that is probably just normal fluctuation. In general, it is too soon to tell, but for this week specifically, it is not supply constrained.

3. I did not count PS3 this week, but as a general observation there are more than enough systems available.

4. Biohazard 4 was available at every store but there were significantly fewer copies indicating that while not selling out, it is selling well.

5. Observation: Hardcore (otaku) gamers in my city LOVE the Xbox 360. When I go to game shops there are always people playing with the 360. Because dedicated game shops are for gamers. However at a large department store, no one gives the 360 a second look. Casual and occasional gamers couldn’t care less about the 360, but among my gaming friends it has a very good reputation, MUCH better than the first Xbox.

6. Ouendan 2 was almost as hard to find this week as last week. But I would not go as far as to call it supply constrained as all the large retailers have it in stock. It is defiantly selling well though.

7. Harvest Moon is not supply constrained but it seems pretty popular. Yesterday some of my students were talking about it (when they should have been paying attention to their lessons).

noob ms paint yay!

That's actually a pretty good showing for Wii software considering the hardware sales.

DSLite sales are still as amazing as ever, which is excellent. It's a LITTLE bit heating up the back of my head, because I'd hate to see that ramped up Nintendo production go to waste: I see plenty of DSLites stocked at my Walmarts and Targets as well.

But then NPD comes and sales are as brisk and jaw-dropping as normal.

Good time to be a Nintendo fan.

Nice report, Vinnk.

But in point 6, shouldn't it be 'definitely', not 'defiantly'?

It should be, but now reading it and thinking about how a lot of people thought it would sell badly, I like defiantly' better.

That's very interesting. Were they so positive about it before the PS3 began to tank? I'm wondering if the failure of the Sony's system provides some motivation for the Japanese hardcore to take a harder look at the competition. It undeniably has a good lineup of games. This is the first positive news I've heard about the 360 in Japan in a long time.

What I find interesting here is that last week's report indicated some retailers weren't expecting any more shipments, but there it is. Seems retailers are willing to give this one more chances.

I think the severe shortages are over as evidenced by Vinnk's Village report and that Next-Gen article. It's still hard to find but no long always sold out.

Just curious, what's the opinion of the Wii thus far amongst friends and gamers?

My gamer friends love Fire Emblem and Zelda they think it is a good system. However it's my friends, who haven’t played games since the famicom days, that are going wild about it. Hardcore gamers I expect to be into it, but now people I would never expect to pick up a game are raving about it.

barchartweekly.php

Wii comparisons: At 27 weeks, Wii is where GCN was at 115.5 weeks (November 26, 2003), where DS was at 31.9 weeks (July 9, 2005), where PS2 was at 26.1 weeks (August 27, 2000), and where PSP was at 55.3 weeks (December 27, 2005).

PS3 comparisons: At 30 weeks, PS3 is where PS2 was at 3.5 weeks (March 22, 2000), where PSP was at 11.7 weeks (February 24, 2005), where GCN was at 15.9 weeks (December 29, 2001), and where Wii was at 4.9 weeks (December 30, 2006).

PS3 vs Wii: Weekly shares are 11.4 / 88.6, bringing total shares to 25.9 / 74.1. If Wii stopped selling and PS3 continued at this week's rate, it would catch up in 188.3 weeks (January 11, 2011).

PS2 vs DS: At this week's rates, PS2 and DS meet up in 27.9 weeks (December 15, 2007) at ~20.85 million apiece.

On week 22, total hardware sales for the year have passed 7 million. Last year this happened on week 32. The year before that, week 48.

Nintendo hardware sales for the year have reached 5 million. Last year this happened on week 32. The year before that, week 51.

Microsoft hardware sales for the year have reached 100K. Last year this happened on week 47. In 2005 and 2004 it wasn't reached, while in 2003 it happened on week 52.

How long has the Micro been outselling the SP? I just really noticed that last week.
Consistently since the week of April 23, but it's been back and forth with them this year with GBM in the lead more. They're both going down, though.

Why the DSL is still selling more than 100k/week?
After a year and a half of it, why would you expect it to stop now?
sphinx said:
We shouldn't forget the PSP was selling steadily at 18k -20k at one point and in the last months it has been around 30k. If PS3 can find it's "Monster hunter portable 1 and 2", it will be alright.
Not really. Here are the weeks PSP has had under 20K.

Other than Monster Hunter 2 Portable bump, PSP is very much flat year over year over year.

Good to hear. I was afraid the Japanese hardcore were like some of the people on Neogaf. :D

One other thing. I'm pretty sure your Japanese friends (the otaku ones) own X-Box 360s. Have any of them had them break down yet?

I'm wondering, because in the US they're currently ticking time bombs. I was wondering if the Japanese releases were any different.

Thanks. :)

A little fluff between the ears never did any harm...
Hmm. With the DSL still selling 100k+ a week while not being supply constrained, this could mean enough backstock in december for a 600 to 800k week. I wonder if it'll keep up through the whole summer though. When it's available, people will be less inclined to buy it as soon as they see it.

i agree, next thursday should be fun

today when i went shopping, before i would only see a few PS3 in some stores, but today i saw PS3 are actually everywhere now, but still no sight of wii.

and my friend picked up a wii yesterday from best buy, he told me when he went to best buy, he saw 15 wiis in stock, and he left the store for a smoke before buying it, by the time he went back, 14 of them were gone, and he picked up the last one in the store

Its perfect, stocking up for the huge franchises in fall.

See this is the one time that the masses have done what is right, and dictated the future of trends. By this I am talking about the rushed current gen. There was no reason to kill of PS2 era, it was going strong and perfectly fine.

Personally, I couldn't wait for last-gen to go away, and I would rather have had machines like the PS3 and Xbox 360 sooner. Plus, some of us actually want our games to look nice on high-def TVs, you know.
