Hello.

I've decided to start this thread (which I hope sticks) in aim of finding Unity users to collaborate with on projects and share info with.

OP will be updated as more info appears. To start with, here's the obvious resources:

UNITY PLUGINS FOR MULTI-PLATFORM MOBILE+DESKTOP DEV
plug.jpg

Here's a list of plugins which we'll update regularly, as we learn more.

GUI TOOLS
Tools to help you craft a solid UI, with minimal headache.

NGUI
A well regarded replacement for Unity's oft criticized UI tools -
http://u3d.as/content/tasharen-entertainment/ngui-next-gen-ui/2vh

2D ART AND ANIMATION TOOLS
Unity's 2D functionality has also been criticized... until these guys were released:

SKELETON ANIMATION : SMOOTH MOVES
I absolutely LOVE this tool. We've been using it for our characters. Making a skeleton is as simple as bringing in separated photoshop body parts and intuitively placing them together, adding a pivot and animating in a timeline editor. It is AMAZING. 2D skeletal animation - your work gets turned into a mesh! It also has it's own texture atlas editor / generator.
http://www.midnightware.com/echo17/SmoothMoves.html
User tutorials are here:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=321BVs3l564
Import / Export basics are here:
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/124211-Smooth-Moves-2D-Skeletal-Animation/page3

MODELING (IN EDITOR) : PRO BUILDER
Great in-Unity modeling tool. Comes with basic stuff like 2-poly planes, but you can extrude the shit out of any poly to make full-on cathedral models and other such. Intuitive, ONCE you set it up, which is not intuitive.
http://bit.ly/MLTv9Q
Their Facebook page - they're very active communicators on here:
http://www.facebook.com/probuilder3d
And finally, some video presentations of the thing in action:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CFRyVjm9QPc&feature=youtu.be

2D TOOLKIT
Sprite animation tools, and other such.
http://u3d.as/content/unikron-software-ltd/2d-toolkit/1Wi

PROS
-Good documentation and the video tutorials available are good (though there arent many)
-Includes source code with standard package (I can't resist combing over source and making my own changes)
-Does non inundate GameObjects with piles of scripts
CONS
-Sprite animation editor needs some love

EX2D
The most common 2D solution out there according to wise friends. Will post a clear review of it when I get my hands on it.
http://forum.unity3d.com/threads/101811-ex2D-the-best-2D-sprite-solution-for-Unity-RELEASED
ex2D (http://www.ex-dev.com/ex2d/)

PROS
-Top notch animation editor. Probably one of the best.
-Includes a handy clipping system
-Font editor is excellent
-Excellent texture atlas editor but it doesn't always work
CONS
-Documentation is lacking
-Video tutorials are outdated, most lack voice over explanation and there aren't many
-Demo scenes are limited and all rely heavily on Unity's animation system (which is fine but I want ex2D demos NOT Unity animation clip demos)
-Lots and lots of components for each GameObject
-While testing my sprite atlas broke extremely often and then it would magically work after switching scenes a few times
-No source code without expensive pro license

Uni2D
Should be renamed to "Create a collision mesh for an image.
http://www.bento-studio.com/index.php/all-the-tools/16-uni2d)

PRO
It pretty much does only one thing: creates a collision mesh from an image
CON
Sprite batching is totally broken

Futile
Another 2D animation editor.
http://struct.ca/futile/

PROS
-Uses GoKit for tweening
-Open source accepting pull requests
-It's only in alpha and it ALREADY has more video tutorial time than all the rest
-Works extremely well with regard to handling different platforms
-Very, VERY code centric approach (good if you like it)
-Very Flash-like naming conventions (once again, only if you like it)
CONS
-No editors available
-It really has no editors

LOCALIZATION TOOLS
Tools that let you put languages in the game a lot easier.

LOCALIZATION PACKAGE
Localization Package from M2H
Hooks into Google Docs and can be used for art assets too.
http://u3d.as/content/m2h/localization-package/1Ya

WEB TECH
Things to display webcontent in your game.

WEBKIT UI
Use it for embedding web content into your Unity project:
http://u3d.as/content/mythos-labs/u-web-kit-standard/2Nj

EXTERNAL COMMUNICATION TO OTHER THINGS
Things like gamerscore, Facebook posts, Twitter posts, in-app purchasing. Chances are, I'll split this section up into smaller ones.

PRIME 31
Analytics, Game Center, Game Kit, IN APP purchases... Until Unit does their cross-platform solution to this, this looks pretty solid:
http://www.prime31.com/unity/

External Sources for some of the data:

Perfect timing, i just started with Unity 3D.

Hopefully some gaffers are already relatively pro with Unity, cuz ive already got a question the Unity Forum was no help.
I need to make a plane(for now it will be a maze in the full game) randomly sway left, right, front and back, almost like you were on a boat in rough seas or something......the game itself is like a marble game but the ground is against you as well as it randomly moves trying throw you ofcourse.

But i cant quite figure out how to script it to not tilt beyond a certain level....im really bad a scripting but im trying to learn.

Also, would it be easier if I make the plane(maze) be the only part controllable as in you dont actually control the ball but control the plane itself and trying getting the ball to finish line by tilting it in the right directions?

Damn if only i payed attention during my Comp classes, then all this scripting would be easy.

Cool, subscribed. Worked a bit with Unity but then moved on to do 3D modelling and never tried it again. I'm probably starting a new project using it so this is no doubt interesting.

Will check out that NGUI thing.

I don't have any idea on how to use it, but I'm trying to make some experiments on iOS.

About time!

I've been using Unity at work for about 1.5 years, first for virtual worlds, and then for serious games (emergency training, fire propagation...) with a huge component of multiplayer. Now I'm working on some AR apps for Android and iOS.

I think I can't show anything publicly here :(

I'll use this thread to pimp some student Unity games then:

Back to Bed
cT4Xi.png

A quirky puzzle game where you have to guide Bob through his dreams. You play as his sub-conscious dream animal, Sub-bob, by creating a path for him to walk back to his bed.

Play it here

Wake Up Clone
ifssu.png

A first person exploration platforming game, where you have to travel from the bottom of a dark pit, to escape from the clone factory, and find the truth of your origins.

Play it here

A Mother's Inferno
2BuVY.png

From the director of 1916 comes a game about the five stages of grief, as a mother deals with the loss of her child in a psychotic version of a train, where grief takes a physically form desperate to kill you.

Play it here

Distorpia
eFidr.jpg

A puzzle game where you shifts between the real world and the digital world, in a attempt to clear a way through the physical world, by placing objects in the digital plane, that will manifest itself in the real world.

Play it here

Blackwell
m2FJul.jpg

A first person stealth game, where you play as a patient in a insane asylum, you have to escape while the wardens roam the halls.

Play it here

Hell Driver
rCe9L.jpg

Welcome to hell, where Satan (or Bob for short) is your guide through a road movie where driving over stuff and shooting at a truck is the focus of the game.

Play it here

As a side note, anyone have any experience in doing a decent top-down camera that follows the player around?

I've been using it for my project for a while now. It's pretty solid and I like it. Gonna like it even more when they add in their own animation system.

I just downloaded unity on Sunday night.

I was just going to ask if we could have a GAF learns unity thread.

I tried the Unity Flash thingy for a competition and it was cool. The Javascript-esque scripting was easy to use and I did not even have to mess with the ultimate horror of C#. =D

If I may ask, where do you work? I'm interested because, well, I live very close to Asturias and I only know Milkstone :)

Any suggestion what would be the best way to approach isometric game in Unity. I´m looking for proper depth layering and snapping for tiles. I browsed through the 2d addons from asset store but none of them are really addressed for isometric games in mind.

Here´s some tiles that I´ve made earlier, when I was planning the pipeline for the gfx creation.

and a basic level mockup made from the tiles:

I´ve just started evaluating different game engines suitable for a project like this. Any suggestions are welcome.

Did they ever fix the problem where you had to like import models with their axis backwards or whatever it was? I haven't used Unity in like a year +. I just remember that was a pain in the ass. I might get back into it.

Nice OP

You might want to add(as well as to the title of the topic) that you can get the basic iOS/Android version for free until april 8th (which would usually set you back quite some money).

Any books worth reading on the subject? I'm in need of something that goes into everything that I need to know about Unity, best ways to do things, etc. Not so much about game coding since I have some experience in that, but a complete walkthrough of Unity.

nice thread!, i am just barely starting unity

i've got some problem about lighting

i try to add lots of point light but it is always only 5 of them lite up properly the other doesn't lite up at all, any one can help? ( iam using free version of unity version 3.4.2)

Check your Quality Settings, there's a maximum number of pixel lights you can increase.

Nice thread, been using Unity for 3 years now (built a game in college with some friends for our class project), but after grad, I've been working on my personal project (the name is in my avatar) for the past 2 years with the little time I have during the day. Hoping to complete the app this year, it's been a long (and sometimes painful, especially since I'm a 3D artist and not a coder) ride :-D

I appreciate this thread :)

I also just started using Unity and I am going through Will Goldstone's book right now (just finished chapter 2 creating my first prototype). Good book so far, and he does a decent job of explaining basic coding (which I need since I have never coded in my life). I still have tons to learn before I get to a point where I can code creatively and not just code what others are teaching me.

Should be a fun project though.

Which book? I've been thinking about getting this one. His bite-sized online tutorials are pretty good, so I imagine his book is too.

Does anyone know of a library that adds some functionality in the field of drawing HUD elements? More specifically, something to draw basic geometric shapes such as lines, circles, triangles, etc. in certain colours, with a certain thickness or fill, and so on. The basic Unity functions on this seem extremely limited and require special textures.

Pretty sure that is the one he is talking about. I picked it up recently and have been working my way through it. I have been doing some Javascript lessons with that Code Academy site along with another book as well. The scripting in Unity has been the least challenging part so far (I am terrible at the basic 3D stuff, my island from the second chapter of the book was an abomination)

I've been using Unity3d for almost 2 years now working on a game to replace an intro university course.

I was very disappointed to hear at GDC that their UI solution likely won't be coming until 4.0.

WEB TECH
Webkit UI

This link seems to be broken and I can't seem to find the proper one with a quick search.

Yes, that's the one :) I purchased the Kindle version and just running the Kindle Reader on my PC

I am the opposite, I have never really coded ever in my life, so I am having a little difficulty following the JS stuff. I have a basic understanding of why their doing it, but if I was asked to go and write out the code myself without any guidance, I wouldn't be able to.

What is this Code Academy site you speak of?

Edit: http://www.codecademy.com

Wow this is a pretty intuitive way of learning JS. I am really liking it so far and it's starting to click with me.

That's some beautiful work.

Can I ask why not just go 3D with a fixed isometric camera?

That site is great, thanks for that link. I haven't programmed anything since I was 8 years old trying to teach myself BASIC on a Trash-80, and I've always wanted to try to learn something more relevant but there never seemed to be time. I might be able to do this to at least get a taste.

Why is this thread not getting more love? Me and another guy at my university are just getting started on a Unity project. Tried Unity a couple years ago and wasn't too impressed but I gave it more of a chance and was blown away, it's really awesome.

Hey I remember this from Polycount!

If everything is grid based modular and low poly then just import the individual modular pieces into unity, set your snap grid to match your pieces (like if each of your 'tiles' is 5mx5m then set your snap grid in unity the same.) and build your level from there.
To make things easier you could import a top down black and white template of your intended map layout and snap the pieces to match. Saves having to wing it.

Set your camera up in fixed iso (I'm sure there are already snippets of the code needed to do that out there in the community) and away you go!

The built-in toon shader is really nice. You can have your characters looking straight out of Killer7 if you make your own shading ramps.

I've been using unity since 2008, and done a bunch of projects with it.

I'm thinking about writing some beginner tutorials, and I'm trying to decide which topics to cover.
It's tempting to do them entirely in 2D, but I'm not yet sure.

I have just started using Unity and I love it so far! I am currently working on creating my first terrain and it's great how many things you can find online (textures, assets, etc.). I have hardly done any scripting so far but I have watched a few videos on it and it doesn't seem too bad.

Me and my friend were building a unity game, but we were bummed out by the graphics part. We can definitely code the game but the art isnt something we are really good at :( May cause us to abandon our project.

Unity kicks ass compared to Unreal ED. I just love being able to create a C# class on the fly that can manipulate whatever object I attach it to. Once I learn how to properly animate I'll probably make a proper game.

Dude! That's what the asset store AND the community forums are for! Don't give up!

Bumping to ask if there is a good way to export models from Sketchup (free) to Unity easily? I keep seeing that it's really easy with the Pro version but I don't have that :(
