New DriveClub build shows improvements

Got a chance to play this today. Out of everything I saw/played, this was really the only next-gen game that properly impressed me. Its not my type of racing game at all, but its undeniably pretty.

Do you know what track it was? Might help tell us know what build it was. If it was a forest-y type track, it was probably the Gamescom build.

I was very disappointed DC wasn't looking like this:

Figured it was a typical hype trailer... I mean, didn't even Motorstorm get downgraded significantly before release?

But seeing this:

That's great to see. If this is the standard for the game, then it's going to be astonishing. The backdrops are really something else.

On a different note, this game doesn't have split-screen, does it? I can't imagine it would, but it would be the tipping point incentive for me to pick it up launch.

Personally I'm not a fan of the colour palette. It gives a rather cartooney look. GT5 also suffered from a similar problem. Everything looked garish in daytime, but brilliant in overcast/sunset/night.

The above looks so much better because the lighting looks realistic.

Holy shit...as a Floridian who escaped the bitterness of NYC weather this year, that gave me the chills and made me feel cold inside.

DC has come so far visually. Goddamn.

Was it the latest build or an old one? Wich track? how many cars were on the track with you?

Resolution ?
Framerate ?
I did not have time to count the pixels, sorry.

Framerate was definitely not 60.

Regardless, the vistas and environments just looked gorgeous.

As for how it played, like I said, its not my type of racing game. I like them more on the sim-side of things, so my opinion on it probably doesn't matter at all to people interested in this game.

ffs...

Wait, where?

You cona't drop this here and don't give more impressions! Come'on!
Gadget Show Expo in London.

I'm guessing it was an older build. I don't know the name of the track, but I'd seen it in footage before. Slightly mountainy.

Not sure I have a lot of useful info to give. I haven't exactly been following this game real close, so I didn't know what I should have been looking out for or anything.

This is suppose to be more of an arcade racer right? Or is it a cross between NFS: Shift and GT5 realism?

The game looks fantastic by the way and I don't know if 60 FPS is needed as much for a racing compared to an FPS game.

I didn't play it but I saw it being played today at Gamex here in Stockholm. I was the same build that the first batch of Facebook videos came from... so I guess that was the Gamescom build? At least it was the same track. But it was nice to see some stuff around that like loading screens which I don't think I've seen in any videos... :)

I really think the game is pretty good looking and what does it is the lighting and environment with all the foilage and stuff. Forza on the other hand I think looked quite bland, at least the track they had on when I checked it out. The only thing it had on Driveclub was the framerate. Wish I had the time to stand in the line for the PS4's so I could have tried it and give some impressions on how it handled but it was two long queues and it seemed random which game you got to play.

yea I think you just played the gamescom build. The track is set somewhere in Canada, forgot the name

He said it looked great so why bother asking the above questions? Surely as gamers we should only care about looks and even then they shouldn't be the deciding factor on any game.

What is up with Sony studios lacking in the framerate department? The studios pump out bullshots anyways to fool the masses, so they should just go with 60fps. Polyphony Digital is the only one that gets this out of Sony's studios.

What would you compare it to? Horizon, Burnout, NFS:MW? I know it's not a sim but I was hoping for sim-ish type racing where you actually lose control and such.

I played the Gamescom build at EGExpo, and the back end of the AMG SLK I was driving was properly twitchy if you floored it too hard - more sim-biased than arcade, for sure.

I'd guess that they want this game to be a visual showcase for the system, so they try and make it as pretty as possible and then see if they can get performance up after that.

PGR, I guess?

You can lose control still.

Any mention out there of the full race they planned on showing by today?

Cannot wait to see the full race. Should be glorious

The video is in the hands of the PlayStation youtube channel. It's them that will release it, not Evolution.

We just hope they did the right thing and got a copy to Blim.

I drove up to Boston, passing through NY from Indy, and driving through the mountains and seeing all the snow and frozen water that seemed to freeze on it's way down a rockface... is just amazing. Seem surreal. I've never seen anything like it being from Indiana.

These 60FPS folks need to go make a thread and do some ritual masturbating in it, I'm about ready to bash my head through a wall lol. Driveclub puts out some mediocre build, and the entourage sits around bitching about 1080 60fps, driveclub then puts out some of the most mindblowing visuals I've ever seen in a racing game, and again, the only words out of these people mouths are 60FPS. Jesus go play some other game please and just stay out of this thread lol.

Hey, at least we have lots of farmland, mills, and... more farmland!

Good to hear. PGR with a little more sim sounds pretty good. Not the sim I want but that will happen when GT7 is released in a few years (or GT6: PS4 Edition /crosses fingers).

I remember playing a ton of GT5 and then Forza, I got hooked on wheels and such and then went for NFS:Hot Pursuit 2 .. .and really didn't enjoy it all that much. I don't like really arcade racers anymore with a wheel and I just feel dirty playing them with a controller. It sucks.

60fps in a racing game is not some kind of secondary feature. Visuals are one thing, gameplay is another and the 60fps in a racing game definitely improves the quality of a game.

The 60fps can of worms was opened up by Evo, and the best way to shut it down would be for Evo to clearly state which target they have decided upon, which has to be 30fps, right? I mean, c'mon. I can't even fathom a game looking as good as the latest shots being 60fps, but hey, I believe in miracles, sortof, maybe.

But seriously, if Evo stated plainly that the game is going to be 30fps that would lead to the necessary tempest followed by a focus on the actual game to come, and less on the one that may exist only in our minds.

Racing games are generally 60fps to add to the sense of speed by making the motion more fluid.

But from what I am seeing out of the latest videos ... the sense of speed is fantastic. Very realistic.

As long as the framerate is stable and smooth, that is all that matters. The sense of speed is there, the IQ is there, the little touches are there, the environment is there, it is all coming together very nicely.

Now put it all together and release that full race video! My eyes are ready.

evo has already said 30 fps a million times. people are still clinging to that 60 fps target quote.

if the game is 60 fps, evo will say so. people need to seriously stop bringing up 60 fps in every driveclub thread and quoting that "we target 60 fps" as an excuse. so far it's 30 fps, there has been zero vids of driveclub being 60 fps, there has been no indication that dc is 60 fps. so far, it has been 30 fps so people need to stick to the things that evo shows us. we live in the "what is" not the "what if". if it's 60 fps come launch, great. but until evo says so, assume it's 30 fps and not 60 fps.

My apologies then, as I've never seen them say it even once. 60fps has always been held out or teased as possible.

but until evo says so, assume it's 30 fps and not 60 fps.
And now it looks like you're contradicting yourself.

Look, I already do assume 30fps. But if people want it to be case closed, then Evo stating that the final game will be 30fps will do exactly that. Short of that and people will hold out for the possibility. A possibility that Evo put out there in the first place.

Hey I read on gaf this game is releasing at only 35% done.
I mean, did you see the E3 videos?

HA!

Looks absolutely amazing. Never doubted Evo for a second. Definitely going to make me buy a ps4.

Just like with shooters, racing games are highly dependent on reactions and precise inputs. You literally will drive better in a racing game going from 30fps to 60fps and you'll feel it.

Also, the fast, moving nature of the game just looks better smoothed out. It wont always add to the sense of speed, but it'll look massively better the less choppy it is.

I don't necessarily think 30fps is the end of the world(especially if its solid 30fps), but I certainly don't blame people who are put off by it in a racing game. Same as people who don't like it in shooters. That's not to say there aren't some people here just using it as some desperate way to cling onto some form of criticism, but its not an outright dismissable preference, either.

Anyways, DriveClub is gorgeous. 30fps or not, its a visual treat.

they put that out months ago.

and there are way more people who cling on that possibility than what the reality suggests.

They really need to just come out and flat out say 30fps or 60fps. Just get it done and over with

we know it's 30fps. if they say 60fps now it might not be when it launches. they probably if they are aiming for 60fps they would want to wait to see if they can lock it there. rather than disappointment people.
