The Official NeoGAF Groundbreaking Electronic Music Thread™

Awesome! I was on the fence about getting a ticket to see him in September but I've heard a ton of good stuff about his live show. I'll probably do it :)

If you get a chance, do it! Even if the music isn't your cup of tea it's a worthwhile experience. I've never seen such a fully realized audio/visual presentation.

Several near me(Atlanta, Nashville), cool cool. Elite Gymnastics is really fun, I want a RUIN shirt. Wild Nothing would be cool although odd pairing, love Captured Tracks stuff.

Oh man. FK. Fucking killed it. I spent most of his set just flabbergasted at the fact that I was within 10ft of a guy who residenced at Paradise Garage.

Played one Skrillex track, but other than that his whole set (2.5hrs?) was pure artwork. The boy plays (and programs) alright.

No problem.

Does anyone here that Djs use a midi controler? I cant afford eith erht cost or space of CDJs or turntables but I thought about picking up somehting like this
http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=280896905100

I annoyingly lost the bid at the last min :( but it seems pretty good for learning the ropes when used with like Virtual DJ and is not too expensive? Any opinions?
For convenience, I bought (relatively impulsively) the Vestax Typhoon. It was the only cheap(ish) one that didn't look like arse, had at least one pair of RCA outs and could be run solely off USB if need be (supports external power though, which I think grants more headroom before distortion. Haven't bought a power pack yet though).

The software that came with it was mostly arse (VDJ is crap, Serato Intro is missing FAR too many options... see my post on the Serato forum here) but after some fiddling with Traktor Pro, it's actually pretty good (for the price).
But don't settle on the standard colour scheme, hunt down this one:

Mine was sold to me by Phil K. Was stunned when I was served by him as he's actually a really good friend of a friend of mine, but neither of us knew he worked at this store.

The Typhoon is great for learning the ropes with a digital controller. The only things I don't like about it are the faders for EQs (just does not make any sense and does not feel right), no kills on the EQs, and the plastic construction. Other than that, the sound card in it is surprisingly good, the jog wheels are EXCELLENT, and it's cheap. I think I still have mine... I could just give it to you. I know you're in the UK, but what the heck. I'll let you know if I find it!

Yeah, no complaints with mine, either. It's almost all software that I'm frustrated with. Especially Intro, using the excuse that it's "base" software for not including the ability to change things like jog sensitivity and the brake speed/effect (as it is, it's annoying as well).
Traktor is fine, though.

Yeah, you NEED to use a full version of Traktor with it. Vestax is a truly great company for MIDI controllers. I kind of really, really, really want this controller, but I'm just going to save my money for 1)a new apartment and 2)a mixer and two tables. My Reloop DJI2 works perfectly fine for me right now.

So, as some of you may recall, I posted about a DJ set I had on Saturday night... Well, it was not my best moment (one of my worst, really), so I wanted to make a mix to redeem myself (I'm my worst critic, seriously, I'm way, way too hard on myself anytime I play live). I'm really, really happy with this. The only thing I don't like about it is my use of the ramp delay on the first track, but otherwise I'm quite pleased (very pleased with my transition from "Model" into "Street Walker" :3). Anyway, hope you guys enjoy!

Bicep - Silk (Throne of Blood)
Bonar Bradberry - On the Bounce (Under the Shade)
Octo Octa - Oh Love (100% Silk)
Octo Octa - Deep Hurt (100% Silk)
Todd Edward - Searchin (Nu Trend)
Disclosure - What's In Your Head (Greco-Roman Records)
Leon Vynehall - Mauve (Well Rounded)
Eliphinio - Vrybdy (somethinksounds)
Goldffinch - Model (Audio Culture Holland)
Duke Dumont - Street Walker (Turbo Records)
Goldlines - Neptune
Trevino - Backtracking (The Nothing Special)
Trevino - Buried ([naked_lunch])
Eddie Mercury - In Mexico (Andre VII Remix)
Trevino - Juan Two Five (The Nothing Special)

edit: also, holy SHIT at this oneman mix! can't wait to get my hands on the tracklist

Thanks for the info both of you, Im pretty much going in blind so I was just gooleing midi controllers, looking at their as new price range and then scanning ebay for bargains.

I could of had a "HERCULES DJ CONSOLE MK 2" if I hadnt fallen asleep and missed out on bidding. Not doing very well with Ebay of late haha

That reminds me, you Dj in new york right? Where abouts? I have a friend who is coming over in October for three weeks (shes seeing a newyorker) and I was going to send them your way if your playing their still!

IMO the Hercules sucks.

I know not everyone agrees, but I suggest the Reloop Digital Jockey II.

In combination with Traktor it's awesome.

Tracklist is up in my post mate ;)

Bossssssss, totally missed that! So goood.

And I do indeed DJ around in NYC. I lost my residency (guy I worked for left for another venture), but I'll be DJing for him again soon at a new rooftop club. I just do random shows here and there, mostly for friends, but definitely hit me up when she's coming and I'll let you know what's happening!

Bit exxy though. From memory, whoever posted it (so, so sorry... just got home from work and too lazy to see who it was that posted it) was looking at spending <100 English quid (or so). Probably in the same market that I was looking at. Bit of fun, possible use at parties but no need for anything super expensive. The Typhoon (the black/blue one, not the ghastly red) fits fairly well into that category.

Article I saw posted today "Is America Killing Dance Music"...

after listening to SiriusXM and attending festivals lately, seems like everyone is playing the same few "trouse" songs, i.e. stuff like Avicii, Bingo Players, SHM... even my alter-ego :p It's actually getting a bit tiring, was wondering if any other stateside EDM fans noticed this.

http://m.inthemix.com.au/features/53105/Is_America_killing_dance_music
Man, in my city (Geelong, Australia) it's exactly the same thing. Unless where you are has a kick-arse, vibrant scene (Melbourne, only an hour's drive away) then you're doomed to that genre, with the exception of the occasional pocket of brilliance in a side-alley somewhere.

PS. That's a great article. Interesting reading those comments on Guetta, too. Perhaps not realising that he made stuff like this and this* and now he's gone on to make god-knows-what.

Yes, I'm aware that this is a link to an MP3, but it's quite literally impossible to find anywhere to buy. But that shouldn't prevent you from hearing it.

Nu-Disco Mix

I had to help my brother move from the Bronx to Providence to start his residency, so I made a little mix for the ride up. Just some nu-disco tracks I've been digging, kinda has a bit of a Jody Wisternoff vibe at some points. It was mostly an on-the-fly thing so I apologize for any pacing issues (it seems very front-loaded with longer, loopier tracks in the beginning, and shorter, punchier ones at the end) or mixing issues... but comments would be appreciated!

And before you ask, I made this the weekend before E3 so that's why I have a song named "Reginald's Groove" on there... I thought my body was ready :p

Will be downloading that, tiesto. :)

So so so in love with Claptone, "Night On Fire" right now. The vocals, the lifted Doors lyrics, that organ, the deliberate pacing... Man, it's killer.

You should get Rayko's "Tigerblood" and "Dust," stat. "Dust" is a favorite of mine, it's an edit of "Another One Bites the Dust," and it's got the most fantastic chug and strut to it.

Will be listening to this on my bus ride to DC tonight, tiesto :) That Greg Wilson remix has been lighting my brain on fire for months, I will never get tired of that track.

Johnlenham, your mix is on rotation tonight as well. Whoop!

edit: for you, Dust

I tried to get into Rayko but thought a lot of the executions were kinda obvious and/or not all that interesting.

I think his best work bar none will always be Barbara Keith's rendition of All Along the Watchtower.
