Thanks to Fruitbat Factory for bringing this great game to the West.
Thanks to Kudo for the overall assistance with the OT and title.

I actually have heard really good things about this. It's cool that it has art by Oyari.

This situation always kind of reminded me of another good game with a well-known artist doing work for it, Valkyria Chronicles and Raita's character designs. I guess the penultimate example would retroactively be Urushihara's Langrisser work.

It's funny that all three of these are strategy games in at least one aspect.

Super huge respect to Fruitbat Factory for localizing this game for PS3. Love the concept and love the art for it.

That said, I have too much on my plate right now that this isn't in impulse purchase territory at this price. I'll wait to see if we hear something about the Vita version and if not I'll just get the PS3 one later. But I'll stick around this thread to see what people think about it. Very curious how the reception will be.

Have been curious about this ever since the great ponpo told me about it. Wonder whats causing the NA delay though.

They're based in Europe, I'd imagine it's the same reason why games from NA often come out later in Europe. We had the same thing with Steins;Gate a while ago.

Ok, it is my understanding that the original game is an adult PC game... so for people who have played this version, how is the game without the adult content ? I mean is it bland because the mature content was the primary focus or is there a solid game underneath ?

Ah, that makes sense I guess. Still a bummer. Hopefully the time in between isn't as long as it was with that title

As far as I know the adult content wasn't simply ripped out but replaced with other scenes. But I'm not 100% sure.

There are quite a few famous titles with adult content that were released on console and were still great games despite the content being removed, and as far as I know this is one of them.

Muv-Luv Alternative, Fate/Stay Night, and older Key series have all had console releases and still been classics.

Believe me it was an honest question and I'm genuinely interested in the game. I was in no way saying that this is automatically bad if the original game is AO.
As you say a lot of Ao games are classics even without the mature content and I am sincerely curious to know if this is the case here.

If I had time, I would probably import from Europe (it's what I did for steins:gate, it released in Europe when I had time).

So I'll likely wait for the US release. Looks interesting.

Having played the game for a week and a half and fighting the last battle as we speak, this is a game that is great even without the 18+ content. The PS3 version has the few 18+ scenes for when you're interacting with the characters replaced by less sensitive scenes, they didn't remove it altogether.

That's a really pink and cutesy presentation for a game with so heavy fanservice. I wonder who their target audience is?

Personally I like strategy games, but I'd need a Vita version me thinks. I'm trying to reduce my PS3 backlog, not add to it.

Oh. It's a visual novel. No longer appeals to me then.

The fanservice for the PS3 version is really light.

There is a Vita version in Japan, but Fruitbat Factory is waiting to see how the PS3 vein will perform.

It's a visual novel and a strategy simulation game. It's text-heavy, that comes with the territory.

Didn't something similar come out not too long ago? Aha, that's right. Tears to Tiara 2 is also a mix between strategy and VN, and wasn't that originally PC AO title in Japan?

I remember joking about how this'd never get localised in icecream's original thread about it. Welp.

How does the game play out exactly? I'm assuming it isn't like Dragon Force where you pick from a selection of kingdoms at the start, rather you always start as Zipang and then work your way around conquering other nations. How much freedom do you have over the order of your conquests? Are new characters added to your ranks after you defeat them?

Picking it up for PS3 tomorrow regardless of the answers, just trying to get more of an idea about what I'm in for.

That would be correct. Since we're Europe-based, our submissions go through Sony Europe first. We originally naively planned to release simultaneously in Europe and NA, but that turned out literally impossible since the stores update on different weekdays, and small unexpected differences in submission processes widened the gap a bit further. But it's coming soon!

Tears to Tiara II was a PS3 exclusive, there never was a PC or 18+ version. Tears to Tiara, the first game, is a PC title and it's 18+. There was a PS3 port of the game that probably had the 18+ content removed/replaced. Digitally Downloaded draws the comparison between Eiyuu Senki and Tears to Tiara II, but I haven't played the latter yet.

The game is 75% visual novel, 25% SLG/simulation game. Before the battle, you pick up to six characters you want, they have different weapons that are strong and weak against other particular weapons. You place the characters in a 9x9 grid on your side and the enemy characters are placed on another 9x9 grid, right in front of your characters. Instead of using "HP", they use troops, which means that you'll need lots of troops to survive enemy attacks. You can resupply and increase each character's troops by using the in-game currency.

At the beginning, you're set to conquer your "own" territory. After that, you get to pick between three different nations, being one easier, the other a little more difficult and another harder one. You get special items if you conquer the harder ones first. That said, you don't get to go all-out on any territoty in the world, for story purposes. You'll get to choose which ones you conquer first, but from a predetermined set of nations. When you conquer nations, the heroes from those nations will join your party, with some stray ones joining at a few points.

A video of the gameplay would be useful - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dnsJua89CxM

Not that I have any idea what's going on in that.

It's hard to find a good gameplay video, I'm hoping we'll get english videos tomorrow that I can add to the OT.

I haven't heard great things about this version of the game. Apparently Eiyuu Senki Gold is the one you'd actually want to play.

What does SLG mean?
It's how they refer to it in Japanese, it's awkward and confusing to use it in English as the term isn't used that way in the west. It's a strategy game/visual novel.

Eiyuu Senki Gold, for those that don't know about it:

This is the powered-up version/sequel of Eiyuu*Senki with additional heroines. It adds an item creation system, as well as achievement trophies and an infinite dungeon. The old Far East country of Zipang is ruled by the greatest hero Yamato Takeru and since it has secluded itself from other nations, it had developed its own unique culture. The hero of Oushuu, Masamune, starved for excitement in this time of peace. After finding a young man by the sea who had lost his memories, she concocted a plan to put him in charge and challenge Takeru. If he was able to defeat her, then Zipang would break its seclusion and take over other countries, leading to world domination!

It's also PC exclusive.

Praying to the based VN gods that this gets a proper NA release soon. Great OT.

I'm hoping it'll be out in November, but at least being a PS3 title, people can buy the game tomorrow and play it on their account.

welp, knowing that Gold version exists now makes me not want to play this one anymore.

I don't think Gold is ever getting localized, though. It's like not wanting to play Trails in the Sky FC because the Evolution series exist (quality shenanigans aside).

That's helpful, thanks. Didn't realise it was so heavy on the VN side, but that's fine too.

Wait. So there's a PC and Vita version of this game yet they choose to localize the PS3 version? I realize niche games don't adhere as closely to sstandard purchase patterns, but that still sounds fucking insane.
The PC versions are eroge which they don't want to do for obvious reasons, but I also think localizing the Vita version would have been smarter. I hope they can re-use most of the work for the PS3 and bring the Vita one as well without too much additional cost.

Personally I just dont like using my PS3 anymore.

It's not like they couldn't take the PS3 assets and use them for a PC release, that is pretty standard for VN publishers nowadays. Many of the all ages VNs on Steam are based on the console or mobile ports.

thats because the pc version is the adult version of the game

Would they really be losing sales or taking a reputational hit if they do the eroge version? Maybe I'm speaking out of ignorance, but I don't think a substantial portion of this game's target audience would buy an all ages version but not a 18+ version.

this basically is a character game over anything. the strategy aspect is fairly light so really if one is going to play this it would more be for the characters / vn side of things.

That's a tough question. Maybe they can answer that themselves.
While there's definitely an audience for eroge on PC, you can't sell them on the bigger stores like Steam and Eiyuu Senki has some 18+ content that is rather controversial, without going into details.

But it may as well just be a company decision not to sell "porn" which I can respect as well.

It's easy to say that Vita is the more popular platform now in hindsight, but the Vita version wasn't actually out when we licensed Eiyuu Senki.

It can still happen, depending on PS3 version's reception. I've personally been a big fan of Vita from the start, and would love to see Eiyuu Senki there as well.

We were also interested in backporting the game on PC, but for complicated license reasons that wasn't possible unfortunately.

Some companies don't want to do eroge games, as some companies want to mostly do eroge games. It's up to them, they must have their reasons. I wouldn't buy the 18+ version, myself.

I really really REALLY want this game on the Vita, so I hope the PS3 version will be successful enough that you can do it. Also the Vita audience will buy pretty much anything at this point, since releases aren't as plentiful anymore.

It's easy to be an armchair analyst on the internet but in the end I'm happy that we're getting this game at all.

I'm personally hoping for Eiyuu Senki on the Vita and more 5pb/Mages games from Fruitbat Factory. This is their first console game and I'm doing my best to help them share the word.
