Where are the odds of us FINALLY getting a Half Life 3 announcement this year?

I think at this point, you would be hard pressed to find a game more holy anticipated than Half Life 3. A game so anticipated, it has already passed into legend. And like most legends, most have long since doubted its very existence. It has never been officially announced, hell, internally it seems Half-Life scarcely even gets mentioned any more...but still some of us believe.

Honestly, I might slowly be getting towards the point of giving up on the project...my unwavering devotion to the franchise keeping me hobbling along like a two legged strider, desperate to hear some official announcement that Valve are indeed working on something. Next year, it'll be ten years since Episode 2 came out, and at this stage I'm struggling to recall what a Gordon Freeman even was. Wasn't a guy with a mustache involved at one point? Is the actress who played Alyx even still alive? Who can even remember anymore?

Valve haven't breathed a word about the status of the Half-Life series ever since Episode 2 released, but that hasn't stopped people from hoping the game is still in production. Could this finally be the year for the game's confirmation, perhaps hailed with an official announcement at this year's E3? And if a new Half Life isn't announced again this year...after all these years, will some of you be willing to finally give up on the dream like I'm afraid I will?

I hate you, Gaben.

Valve makes money hand over fist with CS:GO and Dota 2.

They don't make "boxed" games anymore, so I doubt we'll ever see an announcement at this point.

Very, very low.

Close to 0.

If it is even in development, based on the most recent rumours, it's still in very early development. I'd say it would be announced in 2017 at the earliest.

To be totally honest, I don't think Valve can make enough money off it in comparison to online titles like TF2, DotA, L4D and CS. So it's not going to happen because the return would be too low.

From all the leaks we know L4D3 is in more advanced state. Or at least was years ago. So, if it's still a thing, that comes first and then maybe HL. Maybe.

so, 50% for a L4D3 reveal this year.

At this point, despite thinking they were crazy, I think there may be some truth to it never releasing.

I think we will only see it revealed when they decide it's time to make and license a brand new game engine and need something to show it off. I don't think that time has arrived.

This is what I'm thinking too. L4D3 rolls out. A few years later it gets a VR update. Then within a year of that HL3 announced.

I think at this point it's safe to assume that if HL3 gets made it will skip this console generation, maybe even the decade.

Take a box of tissues. Go to your highest window. Toss the box out the window.

Now express the action of throwing the box as an integer. That's your percent.

Eh, doesn't seem likely, especially since L4D3 hasn't yet been announced and by all accounts is much further into development than HL3.

But hey, anything's possible.

Asking for Half-Life 3 at this point is more or less like asking for Duke Nukem Forever back in 2010. At some point it's best to just let it go and let your imagination build the game you want it to be in your head because anything else will be disappointing.

Low. Not impossible, but low.

There was that bug tracker leak long ago that basically suggested that Valve was in full production of L4D3, and HL3 had a small team of people occasionally doing something with it but basically entered limbo. This is an unfortunate, but expectable effect of Valve apparently allowing people to work on what they want to work.

Around release of Portal 2, Valve claimed they don't want to release new traditional single player games anymore, since (they didn't say that outright) multiplayer games are bigger hits AND have bigger potential for selling cosmetics. Portal 2 co-op mode, in fact, had hats, but nobody cared about this. It is sort of hard to say whether the reason was the fact it was a puzzle game, or that it was co-op, because if Valve thinks it's the latter nothing stops them from halting development on L4D3.

Basically, business-wise it would make more sense to push L4D3, and developer-wise it seems they also prefer L4D3, based on these, arguably old and dubious, data.

Considering how much Valve likes their privacy, I doubt it will ever be "announced".

If it ever gets made, there will be an ARG that hints to its existence and release date, the ARG would likely start a month before release. Then one day it will be available on Steam.
That's it.

They've hinted at the kind of changes they want from Source 2 games and the possibilities that could give to their franchises, but it sounds years away. From everything that is already known L4D3 is next. There people who have already discussed it, tested it and seen it. They'll probably itterate on that a bunch with some new things and then eventually move on to HL3 when they figure out how to do what they want properly

honestly you should give up all hope for HL3. Accept that its a dead series so if HL3 ever does get announced it'll be this amazing shocking thing. Kinda like the shenmue 3 announcement. Every year that you wait for hl3 is another year of unfathomable sadness.

Highly, highly doubt it considering Valve's move into more online service oriented games. Doubt we'll ever see Single-Player focused titles come out of that studio again.

It's dead Jim.

Embrace Valve's competitive multiplayer future. The hats beckon...

I mean... It could come with HL3 deathmatch. They could compete with this new wave of arena multiplayers shooters.

Maybe bundle in some VR games in a new "Box"

Who knows what there strategies are, but there is a lot they could do to still have HL work for them.
