A whole new game indeed. The new NHL brought with it a resurgence. Teams previously accustomed to failure rose up out of their ashes while others struck by the shock of the new game struggled to obtain previous success. To say the year was unpredictable would be...well, accurate.

So with a new season on the way, it's time for everyone to throw their two cents of whats to come. Final standings, Cup winner, the works. Aceface is the man to beat after his predictions came closer to life than anyone else's last year.

And of course, what would an NHL thread be without a random image of Turco hanging his head in horrible, horrible shame

tons of $10 games watching the Caps loose but cheering Ovechkin and proudly drinking $5 Yuenglings from the "Beers of the World" carts.

Cross post from the Off Season thread:

This is a total bullshit pick but whatever. The Coyotes will finish 6th in the West and also make it to the WCF. My logic?

2006 6th seed - Anaheim, lost to 8th-seeded Edmonton, previous year 12th
2004 6th seed - Calgary, beat 2nd-seeded San Jose, previous year 12th
2003 6th seed - Minnesota, lost to 7th-seeded Anaheim, previous year 12th

Obviously there's some talent gaps between the 'yotes and those teams of the past, but you can't argue with trends! Look at the Red Wings playoff curse.

Nashville will be a strong contendor for the cup this year. I think Detroit will go in decline in the rankings from now on with the loss of Yzerman. Same thing with Colorado that keeps losing their best players year by year. Colombus is underrated this season, and I strongly believe that they will make the playoffs, so will Minnesota.

My home team, Montreal, won't be a really different team from last year. Somehow I think Huet will not repeat his good goaltending of last season. Johnson will help the team, but I don't think Samsonov will have that much of an impact.

I'm just gonna do the East since I know it a lot better.

1. Ottawa (still the best... until the playoffs roll around)
2. NY Rangers (big improvements at forward by adding tough North America types like Shanahan, Cullen, Hall to their fancy pants Euro offense)
3. Carolina (just a slight stumble after last season. will still be great)
4. Buffalo (on the cusp of getting to the next level)
5. Philadelphia Flyers (always around but never good enough)
6. Montreal Canadians (a wild card. could do well, could miss the playoffs)
7. Tampa Bay Lightning (just enough left to keep hanging in there)
8. Atlanta Thrashers (one of these days...)
------------
9. NJ Devils (this team is in seriously deep shit. they have to have a mini-fire sale this week just to get under the cap and be able to open their season)
10. Boston Bruins (they could surprise people and make the playoffs, too. they have good players and a good goalie)
11. Toronto Maple Leafs (they're on hard times right now. a lot of the youth has been traded and their veterans retired)
12. Florida Panthers (Auld is good, but they couldn't win under the superior Luongo. why now?)
13. NY Islanders (they'll be one of the toughest teams in the league with a very physical line up and Nolan behind the bench, but that doesn't mean they'll be good)
14. Pittsburgh Penguins (hahahahahaha!)
15. Washington Capitals (yet another year of Oven-chicken + no one)

The west is just insane this year. So many teams seem so good. The race for a playoff spot is going to be incredible.

Carolina vs Nashville in the Cup Finals. Canada implodes.

GO HABS GO
First, the Northeast.

1.Ottawa
2.Montreal
3.Buffalo
4.Boston
5.Toronto

Key notes : The Sens still have what it takes to be tops in the NE. Habs start off slow but get hot toward December and never look back. Sabres are just as good as last year, but key injuries send them into a mini slump that puts them 6 points or less back of Montreal. Boston is a better team then last year, and squeeze past struggling leaf nation. Toronto misses the playoffs and Ferguson gets canned.

Eastern Standings :

1.Carolina
2.Ottawa
3.NYR
4.Montreal
5.Buffalo
6.New Jersey
7.Atlanta
8.Boston

Western Standings :

1.Calgary
2.Nashville
3.San Jose
4.Detriot
5.Edmonton
6.Anaheim
7.Colorado
8.Columbus

-Ovechkin wins art ross
-Lundqvist takes vezina

Stanley Cup : Nashville

Why Nashville? why not. pure maggy the monkey pick right there.

edit - changed things around slightly.

Yay Hockey!

Man October 4th can come soon enough.

My Sens are once again going to dominate the regular season and end up with a slew of injuries come playoff time. :D

I look at these predictions and notice Toronot not making the playoffs. :lol :lol :lol

Is there a reason? I think they've improved their team enough to at least place 8 or 7. But they still suck. ;)

Nittymaki is injured and will miss atleast 2 months. You don't know if a goaltender will bounce back from a hip injury because of the hip flexor being much weaker etc.

I just can't see Philly beating Buffalo, Carolina and then Ottawa.

My picks for the ECF are Buffalo or Ottawa. Carolina has a chance to repeat but I think they're soft on D and Ward hasn't played a 60+ game NHL schedule.

WCF my picks are Calgary and Anaheim.

It's quite obvious why you're known as the "Delusional Habs Fan". Habs in 2nd in the Northeast? :lol :lol :lol

My ONLY prediction is, as bad as they may be, the Leafs finish ahead of the Habs. They may be 11th and 12th in the conference, but I'll be damned if we're not better than the Habs.

The west is going to be ****ing stacked again this year. :D

West -
1) Nashville - Had to admit it, but yeah, this is their year. (still not gonna win the cup though)
2) San Jose - Super powered offense and capable everywhere else.
3) Calgary - Best all around team in the northwest.
4) Detroit - At least I hope so.
5) Anaheim
6) Edmonton
7) Minnesota
8) Dallas

East -
1) Ottawa
2-8) Don't Know

Pochacco

This is a total crapshoot
Rankings in terms of points.

East:
[1] Ottawa Senators - their offense is still tops
[3] New Jersey Devils
[4] Buffalo Sabres
[5] New York Rangers
[6] Philly Flyers
[7] Boston Bruins
[8] Pittsburg Penguins - Crosby will be a MONSTER all season

-Habs am cry
-Leafs am cry
-Panthers will SUCK
-wtf Canes?

West:
[1] Detroit Red Wings - their powerplay will still kick ass
[2] San Jose Sharks
[3] Anaheim Ducks
[4] Edmonton Oilers - Homerism!
[5] Nashville Predators - Central Division still stinks
[6] Los Angeles Kings - are actually a good team when not injured
[7] Calgary Flames
[8] Dallas Starz

-I'll get to experience Vancouver's dissapointment in person!
-Theodore will suck
-Minny Wild will be competitive all year
-Yotes will be mediocre
-Blues goaltending will let them down
-Blackhawks = worse record in the league?

I'm like 3% confident on these predictions.

Also, Crosby will lead the league in points this year :D

I'm betting the sneaky Green Bay Packers find a way into the NHL playoffs. That Favre guy is getting washed up, but he's done crazier things.

I'm also predicting that Wayne Gretzky builds a time machine to make this New NHL thinger happen in the early 1990's, and that the Winnipeg Jets have an exciting run to the playoffs, spurred by grateful fans and talented but cocky centerman Keanu Reeves. Maybe that's a prediction, maybe that's a screenplay I should write.
