Nintendo Dev Portal | 7.8.2016 Update: different layout, "all programs merged in one"

Mpl90

Two copies sold? That's not a bomb guys, stop trolling!!!
The brand new Nintendo Dev Portal was down a few hours ago for maintenance, and now it's back...with some differencies compared to its initial look

https://developer.nintendo.com/home

This is how it looked before the update

https://web.archive.org/web/20160315152430/https://developer.nintendo.com/home

The main page went under some look and this should be the biggest recent change. At least, what Nintendo itself highlights as major news

2016.07.07 - Nintendo has merged all of its developer programs into a single worldwide portal. Registration is open to all, with access provided shortly afterwards.

Also, there's a FAQ section

https://developer.nintendo.com/faq

Do I need to be of legal age to register?
Yes. Unfortunately, minors cannot register for the Nintendo Developer Portal.

Do I have to be a company or have a certain level of development experience?
No, the Nintendo Developer Portal is for anyone interested in developing software for Nintendo platforms. No prior development experience is required.

How does publishing my content on the Nintendo eShop work? Who gets to control the price, release date and promotional materials?
As the developer, the price, release date and content are all set by you.

Is this Nintendo’s indie developer program?
No, this is Nintendo’s one and only developer program. The Nintendo Developer Portal is for all Nintendo developers regardless of their size or experience.

How much does it cost to develop on Nintendo platforms?
Registering for the portal and downloading the tools is completely free, and if you’re releasing a digital title you can use the IARC system for age rating for no fee. All that’s left is the cost of acquiring development hardware which you can find out about inside of the portal.

Can I use this portal to release a physical product or is this just for digital titles?
Yes, this is Nintendo’s one and only developer program, if you’re interested in retail publishing then you’re in the right place too.

Can I work from home?
Yes, we accept home offices, you don’t need a business address.

How do I obtain Unity for Wii U/New Nintendo 3DS?
After registering for the portal, the Unity middleware can be downloaded from the website free of charge, see Getting Started within the portal for more information on Unity for Wii U and New Nintendo 3DS.

The NX logo is the Wii logo twisted into a pretzel

NX logo : P

The NX logo will be extended so it reaches the bottom half of the N. So, it'll look like a mix of an N, an X and an infinity sign in order to symbolize that NX will be Nintendo's one and only console/handheld platform from now on. Boom!

:p

And all you do is add supplemental powering devices to keep it up to date. How handy

Wasn't there another thread already?

Good thing though. Streamlining their developer programs was one of the top priorities IMO.

You know, this is believable. Like NX being the name for the OS just like android, then the console gets another name.

The Portal looks for me exactly like last week, guess I had early access. Also, where do you guys have the Logo from? I don't see it there.

Is there anything new there or just restating policies they had before?
Yes, conditions for registration have been changed, now indie developers can apply to the full developer site without prior experience, allowing them to also develop for (New) Nintendo 3DS instead of just WIi U (and likely NX down the road).

This is awesome, I hope they open up development to other engines as well as unity (game maker and godot optimized etc)

It's also now open to Japanese developers, unifying all regions under one process.

Am I crazy or did some Nintendo registration portal use to have a crazy old school looking website up till now?

So, is the NDI Client (what that logo is for) a new thing entirely for them? It says it's their "newest gem in the box," but it does seem like it would simplify things.

Absolutely! It looks like Unity is just something they are providing as is for ease of use, but that developers can use other middleware as appropriate. Well, at least that's the impression I get when they say, "Check out some of the middleware tools that you can use when developing for Nintendo."

I also like that Waluigi is hiding down there at the bottom!

What about people in South America? I know some people were unhappy they weren't able to sign up.
I'd imagine it varies by what regions Nintendo supports. There's a wealth of talent in Brazil especially who wants to make games for them that Nintendo inexplicably left on the table for Wii U.

That Q&A seems built purposely to shut down any gaffer wanna-be-witty snide remark.

Sounds cool, and no ESRB for digital is great, was that always the case?

Dat NX logo!!
At least I hope, looks cool!

Really happy Nintendo is doing this. Very welcoming and user friendly for indie people/companies!

Now a question: When would indies get access to NX development software? Would they immediately be put under NDA or would they *NOT* get access to dev units until after the system has gone to market?

The online rating generator system is a relatively recent idea. It has a year or something like that.

Nintendo Dev Interface Prepare Development Environments With Ease

Our newest gem in the box is the NDI Client. NDI stands for Nintendo Dev Interface, but it’s really going to be your new best friend. The NDI Client will help make sure you have the optimal development environment on your development system — by downloading and installing it all for you! You can tailor it to the platform you’re developing for, the SDK you want, even the region you’re working in. It allows for easy download of all the relevant guidelines and documentation you need to do your work. It even allows you to update the firmware of certain development kits.

That logo is the logo for their new development environment.

Due to confidentiality I can't talk much about this, but I fully approve this update. Kudos to the NTD team. :)

So, basically, Nintendo is upping their tools and support for devs? About time.

Wonder if LCGeek has some more insight on this, as lackluster support / tools were one of the main criticisms right now.

As far as I can tell, no. The only platforms I have listed are Wii U and 3DS. You probably have to be granted special access to the NX stuff if it's there.

Are you a game developer involved w/ nintendo platforms? Serious question, not trying to pry for more information, just curious.

Nice... Just reg'ed. I'm enrolled in their Wii U indie program but haven't put out shit for it. That's due largely to me not wanting to shell out the cost for the hardware when I didn't have a specific project in-progress to get off of the ground. It kind of sucks that they don't take the approach MS does with ID@Xbox where if you get approval, they send you free hardware.

Do you happen to know what they consider an "approved concept" that would get free development hardware?

I've been enrolled for a while too, but I haven't released anything yet because UE4 doesn't have a Wii U port yet. Still waiting for the Bloodstained team to make that happen. :\

NX better have a UE4 port available at launch (or ideally, sooner)

Like I said, it definitely gives the impression that the NX is being designed with indie developers in mind. It's only a matter of time before Nintendo says "You Know what? Screw it! EVERY NX IS A DEV KIT!!!!"

My guess is the negative-space play button between the N and the X will be emphasised somehow (if indeed NX is the console name).

Quick, someone whip up a mock-up.

I seriously hope NX is the console name, even though it'd be unprecedented for the dev codename to be the console name.

NX is just flat out a better name than anything Nintendo is likely to come up with.

Wasn't Xbox the codename MS used and ended up going with?
