Hey everyone, this is Dusk Golem aka AestheticGamer. I have posted on NeoGAF since 2011, and have decided to resign. I have enjoyed posting about horror games here for years, but I no longer wish to support the site and will be leaving for good. I will still be around the internet, I go by AestheticGamer on YouTube, I make games on Steam as Yai Gameworks, and I plan to go by Dusk Golem on other forums. I'll be joining an off-set of the GAF community leaving to try other ventures like ResetEra (Official Twitter for that here: https://twitter.com/reseteraforum ). I hope some of you who read this may consider it, and I plan to try to expose more people to horror games in the years to come. Just not here.

I hope you all are having a good day, and know I always loved the community, and in the end it's the community I'm going to stick with, not the site itself. If you want to follow me, my official Twitter is here: https://twitter.com/AestheticGamer1

Little Nightmares deserves a mention.

Little Nightmares
A weird hybrid of platforming, puzzle solving, stealth, and hide-and-go-seek, with an eerie atmosphere, and some disturbingly grotesque characters.

Amazing thread, as always, Dusk - subscribed.

I've played Stories Untold - which wasn't really my thing - but I'm looking forward to Observer, which I'm definitely going to be grabbing soon.

Ok how did I miss Outbreak. Like holy crap.

Thanks Dusk, great list. But I may need a smaller list of the best of this best of list.

Marrow was pretty neat.
It has clear faults, strange design decision and is indeed pretty brutal but honestly it's one of the game i was the most pleased with recently.

I kinda hope he will try again at one point with a similar concept but polish it more overall.

Stories Untold is definitely not for everyone, but it's a very unique take on what it's trying to be and some will definitely fall in love with it. Caught some deserved attention though, I am happy to have more horror anthologies and it's an interesting twist on the text-horror game.

Yeah I played the first two episodes and really appreciated what it was doing, I just didn't care much for the act of actually playing the game. I could have refunded but it was like 5 bucks and I appreciated what it was going for, so glad to have at least checked it out.

Great thread - I'll be subscribing despite not having a PC and only gaming on my PS4. But I'm hoping some of these find their way over to consoles.

I've had a rekindling of my love of horror games with The Last of Us, RE4, and RE7 (clearly not indie though)

Another awesome list from Dusk Golem. :D

I ended up checking out Stories Untold earlier this year, and it was pretty interesting with some cool stuff going for it, even through I don't think the later episodes were as strong as House Abandon.

Detention caught my eye a couple times, and will definitely check out Hellblade sometime. I might look at Bendy later too after when all of the episodes are out.

Cool thread. Of those listed I've played darkwood, the survey, the silver case, the observer and conarium. I wouldn't have any problem recommending any of those.

Another one that springs to mind is Stasis, which I enjoyed a lot as well.

Great thread! I have some of the more high profile titles here, and Outlast 2 has been my fav so far. Just dripping with atmosphere.

Subbed.

I've played a few of these, most notably Stories Untold. By far one of the best games that I've played on PC this year. It should be noted, however, that it does run on the shorter end, with my total playtime clocking in a 3 hours, according to Steam. That said, I was completely enraptured my whole way through, but it's very much a one-and-done type game. Once it plays its hand there's not much to really go back for.

For anyone interested in picking this up, I'd recommend waiting for one of those stormy autumnal nights, no lights on, with only the intermittent lightning flash to brighten up your surroundings. I lucked out when it released as there was a pretty intense thunderstorm in my corner of New England the night the game launched.

I don't know about best, but Tattletail was damn neat I must say.

Edit: Also I must say I'm slightly disappointed Bonbon didn't make it on the list.

While the game is absolutely nothing special when it comes to gameplay, I would say it does a pretty decent job at creating an uncomfortable atmosphere, and certainly knows how to raise tension.

I wouldn't necessarily say it does such a good job that it makes up for the shallow gameplay though.

What's the name of that driving horror game?

I know that's vague, sorry.

Edit
Ah Dead End Road.. and 2016..sorry.

You are the uncontested lord of Horror games, right? I always love these longs posts you do. Thanks so much!

D is legitimately a classic, and I'll never forget how shook I was when the plot twist hit.

I never really thought of Silver Case as horror, but yeah, it definitely has its moments.

Greatly appreciated, especially as I'm looking for games to play with friends for Halloween. Bonbon was the only thing I'd selected so far based on RPS's coverage. And The Letter comes highly praised by one of those friends, so I intended to play that myself within the month as well.

...that being said, some of these definitely aren't from 2017, if that matters.

Yo! This is a pretty good detailed list of games. I should try to check a bunch of these games. Subbed!

But yeah, the threads you make are amazing.

Fantastic thread, thanks OP. So many good hidden horror gems on PC.

Detention is depressing as fuck (pay attention to the story) but very moody with very few jump scares, I definitely recommend it

Bending genre rules a little bit here, but I feel like Echo deserves a mention with how fucking unnerving it can be and how it starts out

Nitpicky OP criticism go!

Detention is about Taiwan not Thailand.

Also wow I had no idea about how many horror games came out this year. Going to try some, especially that Junji Ito inspired one.
